The issue with Hydlide is that it released in 1984 and was an incredibly influential game for its time, even inspiring Zelda. By the time the NES version came out, however, the games that Hydlide had inspired were already released, and so it felt archaic in comparison.

The SAVE option actually does something other than just giving you a password. It does actually save the game, but the save is lost when you turn off the power. However, when you die, you can actually use the LOAD command to load the save without having to type the password, much like a savestate on an emulator.

My parents bought this game for me in 1990, so I'm more than familiar with it and I still have the manual somewhere. Okay, until your experience reaches a certain level, you are vulnerable to dying by tiring out just by walking. You have to have to take breaks and just sit there from time to time, until your life meter recovers. The game takes a lot of patience. It basically gave up on it and it took me years go give it a second try. Once I came back to it, I was able to appreciate it a little more. And though it still is far from my favorite game, I do like the nostalgia is brings me. I, too, had always thought it looked primitive for a 1989 game. But now I know why, and no wonder, it's from 1984. That explains the simplicity and the constant music theme.

Turrican4D LOL I didn't really mind. The did a good job of spoiling me back in the day. It actually happened after I asked for an NES version of Strider. KB Toys said the game was discontinued, so when they were asked to show us similar games, they held out "Code Name Viper", Wizards & Warriors, and this game. I'm not sure how Hydelyde is anything like those games, but that employee evidently saw similarities. Luckily, they got some shipments of Strider unexpectedly the following week. I got Code Name Viper that Christmas. I also rented Wizards and Warriors several times after, but never got around to owning it. Needless to say, those other games stole the thunder from Hydelyde. Not to mention the fact I replaced the A/C adapter to my Atari 2600 at this time after a 3-year hiatus, and also doubled the collection by folding a friend's into it. And within the next 3 years, I also got a Sega Genesis & Super Nintendo. All that said, I think it was probably 1998 by the time I finally gave Hydelide some serious attention. I remember being surprised when an entirely different music is used for the final boss. LOL I thought the same theme would be used from beginning to end.

Makes you wonder if James ever played Zork and is familiar with the concept of Grues - the whole "random dying in the dark" setup was a feature in old games to stop people just fumbling their way through dark areas and skipping parts of the game - you need set items (such as the lantern) to turn off the death flag.

Hydlide does have a working save function, just no battery backup. You can load when you hit start a new game then hit "Load". Loading in Hydlide loads the game that's saved to the RAM inside the cartrige, and in games like Zelda, the battery backup makes it so that when you turn off the game, the ram can still maintain the binary data with a slight surge of electricity. If the game doesn't have a battery backup, it will maintain the save until you turn of the console because the binary is being maintained by power from the console. Essentially, it's just an overly-complicated continue function with the plus side of getting to choose where you continue, because Hydlide actually saves the last place you were standing and what screen you were on when you save.
@Darthquackius Жыл бұрын

You're not killed by nothing; the lantern dispels darkness traps (of course these are invisible but do not change places or anything so you can figure out where they are and avoid them). This is a common thing in games like these, where darkness hides unseen traps that light dispels, and I've played several. Even LoZ games have these, though they don't necessarily kill.

But really, what you said got me thinking. Imagine this: back in the late 80's, there was a poor family. The youngest son was utterly obsessed with the NES, the only present he ever received. He liked Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt, but playing them over, over and *_over_* again was getting old. He became extremely excited upon hearing about Legend of Zelda at school, hearing his friends talking about this seemingly amazing action-adventure game. One day, this little boy's family decided to go out. In the window of a store, he saw...the Legend of Zelda cartridges, merchandise, everything! He pointed at the window and pleaded his parents to "take a look with him" (of course, he wanted to buy it). Knowing they couldn't afford it, but not wanting to disappoint their poor little son, they decided to go along with it. After realizing that the price was way too high for them, they offered to look in the bargain bin for another game. The little boy dug through the bin, until reaching a copy of Hydlide, which looked like a fun, exciting adventure, just like the Legend of Zelda! Upon checking the price, his parents agreed to get it. _Oh, what this kid was in for._

I can imagine myself liking this game as a child. But then again, I didn't really have standards back then and the sense of adventure in a fantasy world was alluring. Zelda had me wandering around forever and I never got to beat it until I was much older.

Yes, the game was a hit in Japan... but it originally came out in 1984. It's kind of unfair to compare to Zelda that came out two years later.

The problem is that while the original 84's PC88 Hydlide was the pioneer for Zelda and Ys, this remake was made one year before those games came out and it did not improve enough on the original, original Ys on comparison is still a fantastic game because how natural the bump system is and it had a decent story.
@MassayukiSama8 жыл бұрын
Also original excellent soundtracks on Zelda and Ys helped to make those franchises solid.
@MassayukiSama8 жыл бұрын
You are right the names deffinetely helped and while Hydlide has aged like milk, at least it can be appreciated for inspiring such good series, it's a shame they couldn't remake Hydlide into proper good games, the only one that gets a pass is Super Hydlide

Funnily enough, Hydlide was actually fairly well-received in Japan, and many of its gameplay mechanics would go on to be used in later games.

@seronymus Late reply, but I believe Hydlide was inspired by Nihon Falcom's Dragon Slayer games
@uniresta862 жыл бұрын
@@redmondvalentine2983 Correct. Dragon slayer realesed in september, when Hydlide realesed on december of the same year (1984). Besides some earlier experiments, Dragon Slayer is considered to be the original ARPG.

All these years and i've missed that AVGN has a video on Hydlide. Either i've seen it once and promptly forgot about it, or blocked it from my memory. I only found this via TV Tropes, looking at "so bad it's horrible" list. Strange that it hasn't shown up in the recommended videos for ProJared's review of the game.
