Limelight will be a big seller for you at the new nursery and lucky for you the patent recently expired and you will have a huge amount of cuttings for propagation .

So I learned that limelight is patented. Do you know if selling as cut flowers need to pay royalties?
@naeelabdur-rahman43032 жыл бұрын
@@coralle2 I guess you didn't read the whole comment but limelight is no longer under patent anyone can propagate it. LEGALLY.
@coralle22 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry I just reread your comment and saw it. Thanks for the information. I don’t know much about patents but can’t they redo it again? When I read up on the patents it only mentioned cuttings but nothing on selling the flowers. So I am guessing even if they have it patented you can still legally sell the blooms as cut flowers.
@naeelabdur-rahman43032 жыл бұрын
@@coralle2 I'm not to familiar with companies redoing patents in the plant world,normally what they will do is come up with a slight manipulation to the original plant and change the name. For example "limelight prime" is basically the same plant but is supposed to have stronger and sturdier stems/branches so they don't flop as much when they collect too much rain water.Limelight prime went under patent shortly before the patent on limelight expired. As far as selling the blooms as cut flowers I'm not sure but I don't think patents restrict you from selling the blooms. I do know if the name is trademarked you can not use the name limelight even if the patent is expired. But you can use the name Pannicle Hydrangea and inform customers they are limelight. Cut flower arrangements rarely identify the types of flowers in an arrangement.Plant patents generally apply to propagation.

The limelight hydrangeas are tough as well! They will take the heat and are drought tolerant for hydrangeas. I fertilize them three times a year: once as they are waking up, once as they bloom and again late september. I find that to help as they get started, if your soil is not amended. Once established, you can back off to twice a year.

Its amazing for their third summer and second full year in the ground how much growth they put on. Last year they were 3-4 feet and this year they are in the 5-6 feet range. They are also getting nice and full coming together as I want them to form a hedge. I look forward to them getting a little better each year.

“Looseneck Goosestrife”! Hahaha! I knew exactly what you were talking about!! I understand why you grow it but after having it overrun nearly everything in one of my flower beds, it has literally taken me over a decade to get it all pulled out. Well, most of it, anyway. I might try it again someday if I can figure out a way to restrain it as I love those crooked flower heads! My Limelight is over 10’ tall and would probably be just as wide if I didn’t prune it severely in late winter. (I ignored the tag and planted it too close to my shed and other shrubs - imagine anyone doing that, ha)! I do love it in all stages including the dried stage in winter. I cut them with really long stems and lightly spritz them with gold spray paint to use in holiday decorations. Ones I haven’t painted have lasted years! 🤎

DEER!!! I have a row of nine limelights planted three years ago and they are still only about 12 inches tall which is smaller than when I planted the three gallon plants. They just never get the opportunity to put on new growth because the deer are there every night to nibble it off. I have tried three different sprays to no avail. Oak leaf seem to be doing OK in the shady areas though.

Yes! You said push mower for your pathways! Ok, so…recently and about a year ago I was seriously considering buying a push mower but got talked out of it both times. For drying Hydrangeas, make sure that the petals/ blooms are quite mature before harvesting. Harvesting them too young makes a wimpy, sad, curled in on itself dried flower that is only good for the compost heap. (Learn from my mistake) The petals feel almost papery or leathery, the blooms have an almost crunchy/ crisp feel to them when the timing is right. It’s hard to describe, but don’t worry, you’ll develop the feel for it… this year will be great for observing, learning, trial and error, then see the dried hydrangea results and make adjustments as needed! Wishing you all the best! Hope this is helpful!🥰

I was just wondering why you don't put the landscape fabric over the entire field and leave space in between the rows for walking when you plant so you don't have all the work of cutting back the weeds? It might be worth the extra expense of the fabric.
@FlowerHillFarm2 жыл бұрын
I thought about laying fabric in between. It might be a solution for next year. I like the way the mulch layer we use builds the beds up, and tucks in the fabric underground so we don't have to secure it to the ground, which was much better than trying to pin fabric across the entire space. The hydrangeas are actually about 5 inches higher in the beds than the ground. Who knows! Maybe we will lay fabric in between the rows next spring.

Why don't you put landscape fabric between the rows? Then you don't have to mow. I saw a flower farmer that uses the very wide landscape fabric for her perennials, looked very nice.
@FlowerHillFarm2 жыл бұрын
My mulch layer creates raised beds and tucks the cloth underground so we don't need to use anything to hold the fabric down. I do prefer the look of mowed spaces between the rows but it is a pain to keep up. We are considering covering the rows with fabric but there are also cons to that as well, including more voles living under the fabric to eat the plants. So many decisions!
@katrienvh42892 жыл бұрын
@@FlowerHillFarm yes, an other advantage is that when it rains, that you don't get mud on the flowers if there is fabric everywhere. (I love that in the veggie garden), and ants also love to make nests under the fabric (I use the fabric a lot in my veggie garden but doesn't really seem to bother my plants, only potatoes don't like the ants, but there I don't even have the fabric 😀) .
