You better check with your neighbors about trimming up that tree. It looks to me like the tree is on their side of the fence so it belongs to them even if some of the trunk has come over the property line. Your plans sound nice and I'd love to learn more about hydrangea care. 2 of mine look terrible with cercospora.

Here is my strategy: Go late morning Thursdays & Fridays. The employees are awake and have marked down the prices for the clearance section to make way for the weekend garden warriors and new Fall plants arriving for the front of the store! This way you get first dibbs on the healthiest of the markdowns. I bought 3 pots of beautiful already bloomed healthy daylilies for $3 each. Went back today. All gone this Monday morning.

Hi Moya, The hydrangea hedge you’re planing is going to be glorious gorgeous! I live in Tennessee and have vines, weeds and baby trees that pop up everywhere. It’s a constant battle. I do use epsom salt, vinegar and Dawn dish soap spray to kill things that pop up. But like I said it’s a constant battle. You could cut the vines down and pull out the vine roots then put down cardboard on the ground where they keep growing. Cover the cardboard with rocks or mulch chips. I use the cardboard and cover it with American Countryside Topsoil. It’s like finer ground bark and has a nice brown color. You can get at Lowe’s for under $2 a 1 cubic foot bag. Both Lowe’s and Walmart carry similar inexpensive topsoil. Works great and it’s cheep! Doing that will keep things from growing up through the ground for quite a while. You could also use weed control landscape fabric instead of the cardboard. Check to see how long it’s good for. They have different guarantees on how long they are good for like 10 yrs and 20yrs.😀🌺🌼👍 p.s. Would love to see a video on how you over winter your plants.

I love that I have found another person with the same plant addictions. I insist on going to garden centers every weekend and it always makes my husband cringe, lol. I've also got a really bad Ebay auction seed & plant addiction and its just so nice to find another knowledgeable, enthusiastic addict to nerd out with. Oddly very little is on sale or clearance for us right now except roses and I am a rose nut so I have to be kept on a short lead while browsing. My husband turned his back on me for 5 minutes last weekend and I ended up walking out with an Iceburg ornamental rose tree, lol.
@GardenAddictz5 жыл бұрын
Just wait and keep checking. And Roses and i don't get along, always infected with something no matter what i do.
@KtO6805 жыл бұрын
@@GardenAddictz I grew up on roses in WV but I've had the same issues with trying to get them going in the city, especially since this town has a big Japanese Beetle issue. My husband has no real clue what he likes but since I bought our first hydrangea (L.A. Dreamin') he's been more and more interested in them. I hope when that privacy fence goes in they excavate a bit and dig up those vine roots so they stop creeping into your property. I've found removing roots for vines to be necessary for them to stop growing but it's a total pain. When I did landscaping around Detroit and Metro Detroit we either just cut them back to the neighboring property or we dug a trench along fence lines about a foot deep to make sure we severed roots between yards, then filled that trench with gravel then topped with marble chip or pond pebbles. Can't say it always worked at keeping roots from creeping in but it certainly kept it at a more manageable state than those who just asked for it to be trimmed back.
@GardenAddictz5 жыл бұрын
@@KtO680 Sounds like a lot of work
@KtO6805 жыл бұрын
@@GardenAddictz It can be depending on when and how it is done. Only time I actually had to make one was in the worst of July when some rich customers decided they needed it done now. But, my team leader told me the best time to do it is fall or spring when it's cooler and damper, use a post hole digger every 6 inches along the run to get the 1 foot depth and sever any main roots, then just scrape out what's left and fill with rocks. It's not too bad when you can do it at your own pace and time. We also installed fences and whenever we came across vines like that we insisted the fence line be excavated to tear out all roots within 6 inches of the fence line to prevent ground rot. But we would replace and replant their vines for free if they wanted them back. I hope whoever puts in that fence comes knocking and asks if it is ok to excavate a bit on your side to remove old roots. Not all will though. Some will focus entirely up to the property line then leave you to deal with the leftovers. But, those trenches are worth the work and require barely any maintenance after they are done. Some people wanted them all around their flower beds so grass roots had no chance of working into their beds. But for that there is a blade attachment head for weedeaters which makes the process much quicker and easier but it only digs up to a 6 inch trench.

My yard is pretty much all shade and most of the clearance plants I find are full sun plants. I actually bought my first clearance plant. It was a peace lily for $3. Yay for your bonanza! You are right, so many shoppers likely passed these treasures by. No instant gratification there! But you took a risk and deserve to reap the benefits. No guts, no glory, eh? Wrt that troublesome vine, my suggestion would be to clip it at ground level and then slip some cardboard or tarp under the chain link fence. Hopefully that would frustrate it when it comes back looking for something to climb.

You asked how to kill those vines by your fence... Cut them all off at the ground, then with a pitchfork lift as many as you can out of the ground. Break down some of those Amazon boxes that I'm sure you've got hanging around and cover the area with them. Cover the cardboard with mulch and leave it alone for a few months.

Our backyards are similar- i have a chain link fence between my property and my neighbors, and OMG THE VINE. I don't know if it's the same vine that you have, but i'm plagued with the Bittersweet vine and it's the worst, choking out the lovely trees and plants that I want to keep! And the chainlink doesn't make for easy removal (but i can't remove the fence itself!) I recently read that if the vine is cut, it puts all it's energy into regrowing itself, and less energy into growing it's roots. So it's kind of like the mythological Hydra- cut one head off, two grow in its place! But that can be seen as a good thing- if you're persistent, eventually the plant's root system will become so weak from trying to push out more hydra-heads that it will be easy to rip out of the ground. You could also try to cover the fence with a tarp to try to kill the vines that way. Thanks Google: "The process of killing weeds with plastic and sunlight is called soil solarization. The plastic, left in place for six to eight weeks during hot weather, heats the soil to temperatures high enough to kill any plants below it." It's not a pretty solution and you'd probably have to get your neighbors to agree, but it's an idea. Unfortunately I haven't come across a quick-fix solution that isn't chemical related.

A video on care and pruning would be great. I have two hydrangeas not sure the type but they grow on old wood. I’m so scared to prune them. The video idea of how to pick discount plants is good too. I’m trying for the second year at discount perennials. Winter is always the test as I’m in zone 5.
@GardenAddictz5 жыл бұрын
The ones that prune on old wood doesn't need pruning unless you are pruning out dead branches or to shape. When pruning old wood hydrangeas, always prune right after the blooms are old because they set new buds for next season growth.

Tordon RTU will kill the vines but it can kill all other plants it comes in contact with, so you must carefully paint a fresh cut. I use it very successfully in my garden beds fighting morning glory and wisteria but wear protection and put something under the plant so it doesn't drip into the soil.
