If you add an arduino, and reduce the flow rate of the pump you could synchronize all 3 actuators and have the chair elevate perfectly level while keeping the center of gravity centered in between the axles. You could even go a step further and add pressure sensors to each weel to see in which direction the center of gravity is moving to keep it stable, or you know, calibrate the program over 4 scales.... Amazing development though!!!!

"not the safest thing I've ever made". It probably is actually. Idea: you could probably knock up a fairly simple Arduino arrangement to synchronise the worm drive motor with the lift so that the seat stays level automatically. You just need an angle sensor on the seat arm, like an optical encoder. If Arduino programming isn't your thing, put a shout out on the 'net - someone will offer ;-)
@wotever99ninynine6 жыл бұрын
whats the other guy, xrobots or something? he could knock one of those out in no time. (james bruton)
@gearb0x6 жыл бұрын
yep looks like a job for james bruton, doesnt even have to be optical, even a mechanical variable resister should work (a little bit more noise obviously)
@thom170436 жыл бұрын
It doesn't even have to be that complex. A simple setup of tilt switches on the seat to control the hydraulic motor would probably work. Too far out of level and the motor switches on one direction - too far the other way and the motor switches on the other direction.
@MattOatesUK6 жыл бұрын
If you had a level sensor in you wouldn't need to sync the two it could just keep level all the time regardless, even if you're going up hill or something :D

Exactly. It would have more advantages other than just extending the boom and not falling off - basically a steady-cam seat. ;)

Stick an Arduino with a Gyroscope / Accelerometer on the seat, program it as a PID controller which steers the seat motor and seat levelling problem solved!
@viggoavatar6 жыл бұрын
Gyro is enough, accelerometers are a pain to program rwliably and are not really made for this purpose. Also: gyroscopes use quite complicated coding and calculations, like a quaternion. Not really a thing for a non coder (even a task for a computer engineer). I havent tried it with arduino though, only 32 bit cortex m0+
@krass766 жыл бұрын
there probably is a library that makes using a gyro quite simple on Arduino...
@tommihommi16 жыл бұрын
yeah, it heavily depends on which chip you use, though. Some have sensor data fusion from gyro and accelerometer built in and deliver quaternion data via i2c, if you can get the library to work, that is.
@BeatRush20116 жыл бұрын
Tom Lelie Gyroscopes do in fact make the matter much more complicated as all they can measure is angular acceleration and not absolute angle. But in Furze's case it would absolutely suffice to use just accelerometer data of the rotated axis. The acceleration will vary between -1g and +1g, depending on the accelerometer's angle relative to Earth's center of gravity. As this acceleration value is directly proportional to the angle, it should just be a matter of reading out the acceleration value of one axis and dividing it by a given constant. Of course, you can do extra filtering and smoothing of the result. But as can be seen for example in GreatScott's spirit level video, the deviations between measurements are on a scale of ±0.1° when using a sensor such as the MPU-9250. This would be an absolutely acceptable value which could be fed into a PID library and thus determined in which direction and how much the seat motor should move. Using a PID, it would be possible to adjust each parameter so the motor moves as smoothly as possible. (But of course, never forget to include a manual override switch, in case something goes wrong.)
@consultkeithyoung89826 жыл бұрын
Just make sure to test it with a simulated/dummy load. Cause yeah you don't want to be sitting there as you fidget with PID values.

Colin, you should add some breaks on it so when you go up and down, you can ignite some breaks and it won't wobble about and fall over.. Also, any chance of an Engine being put on board?

He did say at the beginning of the first part that this one's not getting an engine because he's done that before.

Great job!!! To keep the seat parallel to the ground you can mount an articulated parallelogram, instead of the second motor.. In this eay you can easily control the height of the seat with only one motor and use the second motor for a fine tilt adjusting.. Far more easy!

Suggestion 1: Figure out the smoothest combination of moves to get you up and down, then etch/program those (sorry I'm not that familiar with electronics) into a small circuit controlled by one big lever to go up or down. Then you don't have to mess around with 3 different controls and it'll look cooler/more smooth. Suggestion 2: Mod the wheelbase again so it can climb onto high pavements by driving straight into them (and maybe stairs). Suggestion 3: Don't do anything to it that makes it unusable in real life. I know a lot of your inventions fit into the "crazy toy" category and rightly so, but what I like about this one is I can actually see an old man going around a shop with it and casually using the lift to reach the shelves. It would be so cool to make this super functional and "shop friendly", give this to an older relative/friend/neighbour of yours and see them actually using it without dying or setting the shop on fire. Suggestion 4: For self defence, the most likely situation I guess is someone robbing the user and running away. So you should put a Bola cannon on the front. From wikipedia: "A bola is a type of throwing weapon made of weights on the ends of interconnected cords, used to capture animals by entangling their legs." That could be fun. Suggestion 5: Also put a teenager deterrent on it (one of those high pitched sound emitters) and possibly some sort of hydraulic leg sweeper to knock the legs out from under any yobs next to the scooter.

Their center of mass is lower though, and hence more stable. Longer axles or rear stabilizers would help here. The center of mass is moving backwards when the arm extends/contracts.
