I work at a steel mill and this has happened a few times in my 20 yr career, in the USA most of the hydraulic oil we use is called water glycol, its basically really thick antifreeze and smells like it too. it will burn but not near like regular hydraulic oil, our glycol system is 2500psi if a hose breaks and sprays towards the bar in the mill at a rolling temp of 1800-2000 deg F. this is exactly what happens in this video!

I bet you didn't know how to download the security footage from the camera system either, Jk. Sorry.

@@MrScooter46290 they dont allow that where I work and recording videos can also get you into trouble

Many drivers don't know that glycol is flammable. They figure since it's mixed with water it must not be. But you should never reach into the engine compartment of a broken-down vehicle in daylight if there's an antifreeze leak, especially if you've blown a hole in the case or the head gasket. You could stick your hand into a fire, and the flames are invisible by daylight.

Yes on the water/glycol! I've put out some bad ones that used "68". Only maintenance had a camera for frame by frame troubleshooting. Cellphone = Discipline. Those that have worked in steel mills know it is no playground. 4 deaths at ours. All gruesome.

I worked 15 years as a millwright on an electric arc furnace and seen many close calls with equipment failures, we had a 16” diameter lifting point break and 350 tons fall from 50’. Twice the brick in the furnace failed and 150 tons of molten steel hit the ground 30’ below. Anywhere in the steel mill was a dangerous place.

@ 3:15, class begins on the proper use of a dry chemical fire extinguisher. The dust you are about to breathe into your lungs only comes out at your autopsy.

Steel Mills are the closest to hell on earth I've ever been. I used to do environmental work for mills over the Midwest and it was insane. Basically what I imagine all of Russia looks like lol

There was a sign in our Melt Shop that said; "Welcome to Hell, It's up to you to SURVIVE IT!" I know of 4 that didn't.

This is what happens when you don’t clean your grill. Try closing the lid to put the fire out.

That's the most chilled reaction to a fire I think I've ever seen! You usually see at least one idiot running with an extinguisher and falling flat on his face! I'm guessing this may happen fairly frequently in a steel mill?

There's a reason mills have their own fire and rescue dept.'s.

Fires were a common occurrence. PANIC was not.

good on the folks for being ready to respond to this kind of accident

Fires aren't uncommon in steel mills, and that's not really avoidable when there's tonnes of molten steel everywhere

Great response from employees on fire extinguishers, decent extinguishers too. I suggest each extinguisher has a clear bag on it with good dust masks though, that sulfer powder gets in your lungs and will ruin your day.

Sulphur? It's Baking Soda.

I guess some are baking soda, but the yellow powder extinguishers are rough. Don't breathe that stuff in.

This is why you should use water glycol as an hydraulic fluid and not oil. Water glycol is used as standard in conjunction with hot processes at Scunthorpe Steel works. Very silly not to use non flammable hydraulic fluid as the risk of major fire is to great.

We run at 650 bar. Way too much pressure for water glycol. It has a max of 2000psi
@keithlewis9106 Жыл бұрын
650 bar you use to descale with and that is water
@davidfitzgeraldva Жыл бұрын
@keithlewis9106 no the 650 bar is for the roll pressure for forming the steel bars.

@@davidfitzgeraldvathe highest pressure in the steel rolling mill i work in is 2500 psi why do yall need that much pressure?
@davidfitzgeraldva11 ай бұрын
@MrChevelle83 Sorry. I just checked our high pressure pumps and we are currently at 3864psi. It was not 650bar. My math was off.

Years ago the #9 tandem mill burnt completely down. Steel rafters in roof hung like spaghetti. Hydraulic fluid atomized and sprayed on a radiant electric heater. Weirton Steel Weirton West Virginia.

Do you remember what happened at Tyssen factory in Turin?
@maxmad10788 ай бұрын
Haaaaa heavy industry! I spend 6 month of my life in this kind of factory, best time of my life. I had to leave cuz the pay was too low. Those jobs are amazing, you see incredible thinks. I saw a chain that could lift 15 tons break in thousand of piece travelling at the speed of sound. Piouuuuuuuuu. And afterwards the sound of a 15 tons frame hitting the ground after a fall of 10 meter. BLAAAAAAAAAAM! If you have the chance to work in this kind of indusrty, temporary or for a long time ( if it pays good) take it. You will learn a lot lf interesting things.
@maxmad10786 ай бұрын
@Fulgrim-gm2dg yes and no. If they have difficulty to find people yeah the pay is good. But in my case there was just one welding position and we were in a workshop. You could ask for a higher salary, but you had to have awesome production times. If you had to work on the field in difficult situation the pay is way higher, cuz you have to be smarter and quicker with less tools.
