In wood you can do two ways along the direction of grains and perpendicular to it you will see great difference since its orthotropic material

@@berco7 Carbon fiber is not only the strongest material he did by 10x, but I will go out on a limb say it is probably also the lightest, if not one of the 2 lightest. And since it was so far ahead of all other items in strength it simply doesn't need exact measuring to come to the correct conclusion.

I think you cheated the wood a little. In all cases it failed at the grain, wood might perform better against the grain? so the fibres are perpendicular to the press rather then parallel? Carbon fibre got that treatment.
