I used a similar mode webster & bennett vertical borer (mine had two arms) back in the late 70's. One part of what it was used for was parting off a 1 ton section of a casting. The top section was to ensure there were no voids in the bottom section due to shrinkage. So parting tools coming in one from each side. One side was to start the slot the 2nd was to widen it. Keep machining until the top moves independently of the base...it was then removed using the crane. The rollers that were then machined from the base where for a rolling mill. It would be nice if they ground more of a chip breaker in the tool to get chips rather than string, admittedly big string. Also the speed should be higher for cemented carbide. Rough rule of thumb the highest speed will always throw chips off the outside of the table, so this wasn't near its top speed. The set up on the gear cutter looks a bit rough, but its fine as long as it has been designed for. The mating gear will mate properly it just may not be EXACTLY on the centreline. It will be offset by whatever amount is needed for the teeth to mesh properly.
