Imagine what the results would be if you'd set these up straight instead of angled. And had that Big Rail not been bent to one side slightly it would have probably supported a lot more before failing. But squashing them when they are already leaning isjust setting them up. I am inpressed that even when compromised to fail that rail held a lot of weight. But last I heard trains are heavy!

Can I ask what on earth you use a 500 tons press for originally? 500 tons is insane.

There are presses that are far stronger then 500 tons. Those are to mold high density materials. We are just luck to see what could happen in public. Where most places do not allow tours in high risk places. Another thing is if you think of it the big boy freight train when fully loaded it's self is roughly 1.275 million pounds. Which could travel up to about a top speed of 70 miles an hour.

One day I was removing a axle bearing from an old Ford axle. The splitter blocks blew apart. Sent shrapnel all over the shop. I'm glad I was the only one in the shop that day. I'm amazed that the big survived 450 tons. I wonder to what extent the top and bottom (horizontal) part of the rail contributed to the strength. I would have thought these parts of the joist only resisted bending and shearing forces but maybe there are other forces resisted by the horizontal parts.

There is a big difference in the force applied by a large surface in the first experiments vs the sharpened point in the example with the tank armour. The psi in those piercing examples must be astronomical.

I'm afraid your warning came too late for me, I happened to find a 500 Tonne Press in my shed last week and I instinctively tried crushing some lengths of Railroad track - my next door nieghbor's car took the brunt of the damage from the flying track shrapnel - luckily he doesn't know it was me - I thinking of crushing some old land mines I found in the shed, do you envisage any problems with that?
