Hydrocephalus is defined as increased volume of intracranial CSF.There are two types of hydrocephalus - obstructive and communicating.Obstructive hydrocephalus is due to obstruction within ventricular system.communicating hydrocephalus is due to increased CSF production or extraventricular obstruction or impaired absorption.
Common causes of obstructive hydrocephalus are aqueductal stenosis,posterior fossa tumors and malformations.communicating hydrocephalus is due to SAH,leukemic infiltrates,TB and pneumococcal meningitis.
Clinical features are mainly due to dilated ventricles and raised ICT and manifestations are different in infants and children.
Investigations done are USG,CT and MRI.Treatment includes treatment of cause,medical treatment and surgery.surgical drainage procedures are endoscopic third ventriculostomy and shunt.
