Great project. Hydrofoils are indeed very efficient but control is a real pain! Another aspect you might not have thought about is that the lifting force depends on water depth too. Actually efficiency is optimal for 2-3x cord of the wing, with less water depth efficiency drops significantly. It amazes me that you got this to work with such simple and cost effective stuff. Actuators maybe above water and mechanically transfer to wingtips. Great job, extremely well done. This is really not easy.

Thank you Alfred, I really had to tune the system a lot before effectiveness of the control surfaces was enough. If I had time for a second design, there'd be a lot of things I'd change. Tip actuators being one of them.

Excellent project. It works much better than I'd initially expected. To simplify the design and reduce the number of servos, you might try a pitcheron style wing. The other wing could then be completely fixed, without servos. Keeping servos dry is a real challenge. Human-scale foil boards use weight shifting for control. Not sure if this is possible for scale model. Having a motor in the upper rescue boat would make testing less frigid, but understand it's extra weight and complexity. Maybe a secondary tug boat on standby would be useful. (or access to indoor swimming pool, particularly in winter)

Hey, thank you for your comment! Indeed the aileron is not as effective as a rudder would be (because of the mass distribution) If I revisit this I will change this ;) Tug boat is a great idea 😁

This is amazing. I am really impressed you got this to all work. I have been working on trying to get INav to control a model foil boat I designed. Mine does not work but glad to send photos. I have been working on the model to try and get it working there then move it up to help stabilize a kiteboard foil or eFoil for riding. I have done a bit of work on looking at ways to track the higher above water and feed that in as an altitude to iNav. Anyways, love your project, I am very impressed, and would love to learn more about including trying to build it myself.

Happy to hear that you had the same idea! Would love to see some photos and help where I can ;) You can reach me sending an email to Benjamin.Kelm.dtATgmail.com

Hej cool project. i,m familliar with inav from a quad copter but have never thought this would be achieable with a hydrofoil. i,m trying the same project just with an arduino and a trimaran hull(RC). What board did you use? maybe i could ditch the arduino and skip few steps :p Also did you manage to get the ladar working?

deng! imagine it has gps and RTH for navigation and in bigger scale like e-foil game changer!!! youve got a sub!
@yosiska2 жыл бұрын
Maybe you should move the motor above the wings and make the wings with less area (smaller in width and span)

Very nice. But then you built an underwater airplane glued to a boat. A bit far-fetched to my opinion. But very cool and I suppose your had a lot of fun.
@BenjaminKelm2 жыл бұрын
Haha, thank you for the honest comment. The aim was mainly to check if the hydrofoil can be actively stabilized. That hydrofoils are much more efficient at higher speeds should be clear.
@intuitiveengineering32772 жыл бұрын
Hey ben! I really like the project! I found some inspiration from you to help keep me motivated on an active hydrofoil I am building of my own! I think you would enjoy some of the videos on my channel! Cheers! p.s. the swim of shame is inevitable with prototype boats!
