HYDROFOIL -- Supramar AG History by Thomas Wuhrmann in Switzerland -- Hydrofoil

Supramar was a hydrofoil design company in Switzerland, founded in 1952. The founders were engineers who had already worked on hydrofoils in Germany during WW2. Among them were Baron Hanns von Schertel, Karl Büller and Eugen Schatté. In May 1953 the World’s first passenger hydrofoil, "Freccia D'Oro", was put into operation on Lake Maggiore. This led to further development, such as the PT 20 and PT 50. Supramar became the market leader for hydrofoils in the western hemisphere and in Asia for about 25 years

Great video about a topic for which I think it’s pretty hard to find footage of. My interest i hydrofoils started about 50 years ago. I spent the summer holidays of my childhood in a small and simple cabin at the Oslofjord (Norway) and watched in fascination the hydrofoils that passed several times a day on their way to or from Oslo. By now I know they were Supramar PT20’s. One of them, with an orange hull, can be seen in this video. Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to travel with these hydrofoils. However, the summer of 1982, I visited a hobby shop in Munich and stumbled over a radio controlled model made by Japanese company Gunze Sankyo. I couldn’t afford it back then, but found an unused sample on eBay some years ago. A little bit of research made me identify it as a Supramar PT50. Being a Japanese model, probably based on a real boat manufactured by Hitachi. With that I’ve come full circle, as I worked for Hitachi Automotive from 2005 to 2008. The world is small!
