We once begged our chemistry teacher to do this with us (elephant toothpaste we called it), and he actually did try but somehow it never worked. Really disappointing seeing as everybody and their uncle seems to be able to pull this little experiment off. :'(

+SingenStatt Atmen The same thing happened when I suggested it in school, it turned out the Hydrogen Peroxide wasn't concentrated enough. It also works better with the potassium iodide in powdered form rather than solution.

SingenStatt Atmen it's probably that the hydrogen peroxide was "gone off". The reaction you see demonstrated happens naturally at a slow rate without the KI.

If you mean chemical equation; H2O2 --(catalysed by the KI)--> H2O + 1/2 O2. The magic of chemistry. It's that, or if you want to use whole numbers to balance it: 2H2O2 ---> 2H2O + O2
