I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what procedure to resort to for soil with a specific gravity less than 1.0 It's actually a well-seasoned sample from a 30 foot depth boring. There was once, long ago and for many years a paper mill/plant at this site. The geo engineers are asking me to run hydrometer analysis on samples that have a significant percentage of paper mulch in strange combination with accompanying clay, sand and silt. The liquid limit on it is around 70%. I've been doing this stuff for 25 years and this is a first. I don't feel I've even adequately explained the matrix that this long-term, weirdly chemically integrated under pressure set of conditions has created. Any help would be appreciated as this is a rather large and important project. I can't divulge any details other than that. Signed, Anonymous geo lab guy

Don’t quote me on this but I think you could use kerosene as it’s sg is lower than 1. There is an astm standard that uses kerosene to test the specific gravity of fly ash and other low sg soils.
