This is a very detailed video showing how to use a hydrometer for home brewing beer and wine. ABV calculator: www.brewersfriend.com/abv-calc... or just use this formula: (OG - FG) x 131.25 = ___% ABV

I tried to figure out a hydrometer several times and finally decided not to use one with my beer kits. Even when I started doing whole grain brewing I didn't use them because I was following a recipe. Now that I have mature fruit trees and a family can only eat so much jelly, wine naturally came next. It seems like a hydrometer is all but necessary in the wine making process. Thank you for this video. You are the only person that has explained this in a very simple way that was very easy to understand.

Just recently got into homebrewing beer and never could get around to learning how to use a hydrometer. (just used taste, visual cues, and approximation) I could have gone to some other website thru other videos, or text based, However, Craig here explains it in a calm one to one dialog which is very easy to pick up and understand. (with some added humor I should say) At the end, I find myself very informed and not so intimidated by such scientific tools of the trade. A very good video!

Craigs videos are great, easy to follow, just enough explanation of whats going on to help make it interesting and not boring. Negative comments are just rude - dont watch if you know it already, dont whinge if you feel its too dumbed down. Im in Northern ireland and Craigs made my brews much more tolerable, far more use than local halfwits attempting 20% lagers and other muck. Keep up the good work Mr Farraway!

Craig, I love all of your videos and I have become a regular on Friday nights in your Jtv room. Regarding how to read one's hydrometer, I used water as a base and my 1.000 reading was above the meniscus. It was also on the instructions that came with my hydrometer. So you were correct when you wrote in the video to 'read the instructions'. Cheers! 17

Thanks for this video! I got here from coopers after having some serious confusion abt how to read my new hydrometer. I actually read it kind of backwards and assumed it would be at 1.040 at the end and start at 1.000. So when I got my reading before it was time to bottle the beer I thought the yeast was messing with me when the reading was abt 1.009. I had resigned myself for some very light beer when I stumbled upon your video which clarified things for me. Many thanks!

Thank you so much! I have been reading how to make wine online for several years. When I'm to do other beverages and finally came back to wine. No where could I find except in this video, What and average reading for the brew or alcohol that you were making might normally be. They only said 1.00 for water. How does that help me know if my reading is correct? Answer. It does not. You gave REAL info on the range For the initial reading! ...and the boat analogy made SO much sense! I know how it works! . Doing a happy dance. I had tossed this in a corner, think ing.. I will just wing it. Its fermenting now, so I figured I would search one more time! Just thank you. I will now go back to the video...

THanks, I've had one of those hydrometers for a while but only just used it my my last batch of wine. I just made a batch of blueberry, and one of peach-strawberry. They came out awesome - especially mixed with ginger ale and sprite respectively. You almost have to add some sweetness back to it or it's too dry.
