HYDROPONIC TOMATO TRANSPLANTING

In todays video I will demonstrate how we transplant our tomato seedlings into 4" rockwool cubes. The seedlings have been growing in our basement on heat mats under grow lights for nearly two weeks and they are ready to spread their wings.
An important step in preparing the 4" cubes for transplanting is getting them watered down with pH corrected water and a starter fertilizer, and this video will explain how we do this as well.

Thanks Bill! We thought about going hydroponic with strawberries a few years ago but with the difficulty of finding good labor and the pick your own crowds getting smaller each year we decided to get out of strawberry growing alltogether after 20 years of growing them. I do miss fresh berries though!

I use an old trolling motor to mix my fert. Just turn it on and let it go while you wait for it mix in.

yeah that sounds like a good method. In my 50 gal tanks I just use a giant paint/drywall mud mixer on my cordless drill and that works great.

Thanks! Epson salt is not needed to grow transplants. When the plants are set in the dutch bato buckets next month we will start mixing a special recipe formulated specifically for tomatoes with our well water and at that time epsom salts will be introduced along with calcium nitrate, iron chelate, monopotasium phosphate, potassium nitrate and sulfer of potash and a micro mix. Hi can you explain why need to air pruning ?

@@Fox81ful if the flats are just laying directly on a table or some other solid surace like a heat mat, the roots will continue to grow outside of the growing media looking for water and nutrients. The roots will become a long mass of unmanagable mess that will have to be torn apart when you lift the tray to move it, and they will often even grow over into the plant next to it and then the roots will have to be torn apart, which obviously can hurt the plant or at least set it back some. You want those roots to stay withing the growing media and to fill it up so the plant will be stronger and ready to take off quicker once transplanted.
