Science experiment is right...Did anyone mention that, as PVC ages (or is exposed to sunlight), it leaches chemicals--some of which are suspected of being cancer-causing? Insted of PVC components, use HDPE, PET or PETE ones. Defintely more expensive, defintely harder to get , but definitely safer. Especially if you're going to eat what come into contact with it...
@fandore124 жыл бұрын
uuuhh you do know it only runs for about three months and most people are constantly checking the water... thats like more then half of the whole deal. also, if you think thats unsafe, you really dont want to know what walmart and other large grocery stores are selling you. now, with that said, it is true that a very small amount of trace chemicals are found after growing the plants but if the grower is safe and flushes the system out and uses fairly pure water, this should not really be that much of a problem though i would put the system under a greenhouse or something that blocks some of the uv and heat..
@tommysobo1234 жыл бұрын
So, since you are so concerned about the risk of cancer, that means you do not have a cell phone (since the waves/batteries could cause cancer) You must walk around in a space suit, constantly recycling the air as not to breathe in the air (since the air itself has pollutants that have been known to cause cancer) Do you purify your own water for drinking (since CVS, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, Disney, Dollar General, Whole Foods, McDonald's, just to name a few have running lawsuits due to water they sell possibly containing chemicals which cause cancer). Do you drive a car with a radio (because those radio waves could possibly cause cancer) Do you only wear clothing made from cotton that was grown hydroponically using your specific types of pipes and that home purified water? Because if not, cancer causing chemicals could have leached into the soil the cotton was grown in. Or the synthetic fibers in other fabrics could have come in contact with cancer causing chemicals... All seems pretty ridiculous right?!? So does your PVC comment. The United Association of plumbers, fitters, welders and service techs has stated that PVC has no affect on the quality of the water or nutrients flowing through the pipes. Only metals that can rust in time will cause some problems for your plants, but PVC hydroponics are safe.
@ralphnothdurft50304 жыл бұрын
@@tommysobo123 This is false. PVC leeches into the water supply and should not be used in systems that will concentrate these contaminants (i.e. growing food). It is safe for bathing and washing and even reasonably safe for everyday cooking - where the water passed through your pvc system only briefly as it flows from the street to your kitchen. As to the 'The United Association of plumbers, fitters, welders and service techs' ... those are not biologists, they are tradesman skilled in installation.

just got done building my own system similar to this, though i cut two 10 foot pipes in half to fit in my car and came out with 32 spots to plant things, i'll be adding on to it next year if i can find the room =) i'm going to try and grow some different things in it like sweet peas and green beans... see if i get any luck with vine like plants. i'll most likely be adding on to it over time XD thank you for showing a fairly cheap way of getting into hydroponics for people who are new to it.

Help!. We have an issue with too much water going in so overflows from. We are using 300 gallon per hour pump which is supposed to be adjustable although doesnt appear to be the case. Is this just too much pressure?
@ThisWeekinLouisianaAgriculture4 жыл бұрын
Likely too much pressure. I had to add a valve to slow the flow into my first pipe and that fixed my issue.
@noemicollie82414 жыл бұрын

@karlwiggers4 жыл бұрын
I'm using some basic miracle grow seed starting mix. Its not what Rory uses in his systems -- he uses something a little more pricey. The seed has to have something to germinate in. Can't just throw some seeds in water and hope it starts growing. I'll have an update posted soon.

no soil...Using soil kind of defeats the purpose of hydroponics! A few options, plan old Styrofoam (Disney uses it A EPCOT for lettuce), I prefer either Rockwool or Perlite. But NEVER soil in your system. Use soil to start your seeds, grow your seedlings and then place the seedlings in your alternate medium. [don't forget your growing baskets]

I took the recommendations here to go 7 inches center to center. Now I'm wondering if maybe this is too close. Will this be too close for tomatoes? How about cucumbers or peppers? Lettuce or cabbage?

It will totally depend on what you're growing. It wasn't too close for my system growing lettuce.

is a 55 gallon water tank really needed? i was hoping a 26 + gallon bin would work? alo does the width of the pvc matter also thinking of going smaller (thinner). any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
@ThisWeekinLouisianaAgriculture4 жыл бұрын
I don't know if it's really needed, but that's what I used (because I already had it). You can probably get by with a smaller tank, but you'll need to watch it closer and adjust your nutrients for that amount of water. You can use a smaller pipe as well if you'd like. I know some people use 3" pipes. Good luck.
