Great footage here! That was a huge clan of hyenas but the lone male kept them all at bay for a while which was impressive. He attacked a few which got their attention and probably prevented a full on attack. He very likely stole it from them. When his partner came charging in it definitively tilted the balance of power. They looked to be two young but large males loaded with testosterone and ready for a fight.

I saw another similar video and I kept thinking to myself, if I was the lion I'd run for my life. Lions are way faster than slow hyenas. Then I'd wait for the first hyena to approach me and rip him/her apart. Here in Kenya a lion got his back legs really mangled by hyenas. Fortunately vets saved his life. Hyenas are quite intelligent. They can coordinate very well within a pack and do damage

The tiger has no competitors other than other tigers as it stands now in their natural habitat.

They werent fending off the lion, it was fending them off. Hyenas are actually very smart, and understandably they didn't want to risk injury fighting the lion, rather they were attempting to scare it off. If they were really desperate for food they could've tore that lion to shreds. It would be like a parent fighting 30-40 8th graders. It would be easy with the first few but eventually those fuckers would bring you down.
