We have a lot of similar traditions here in Switzerland. Adventskalender (the one with the doors to open paper or other), the advent wreath and the real candles on the Christmas tree. I remember growing that we children had to stay out of the living room (door was closed) until the Christchindli wrang a bell. And then the door was opened and before you in the dark living room was the tree all light up by candles and the decorations twinkled and the ribbon on the presents glittered and it was so magical. Electrical twinkle lights just don't have the same effect. We now live in a house made mainly out of wood and having candles on the tree would be a fire hazard so we don't do it any more. Memories..... Thank you Diane for that. Have not thought of it in a long time.

Thank you both very much! What a delightful set of ideas and traditions. Although I would not dare do the real lit candles on the Christmas tree, it shed light on a question I had about it as a child. I would read Christmas stories mentioning the warmth and joy and candles on a Christmas tree and could not fathom how that could be. It's very kind of Vibeke to invite us once more in her lovely home. The children and I might try and work some wreaths with whatever of nature we have around us, as per her suggestion.

Thank you Vibeke for inviting us into your home, and thank you Diane for sharing your friendship with us, these are precious videos! I love candles so much! and all year round! You made me remember my Christmas traditions as a child when we were with my mother's side of the family, as we were traveling, we did not always manage to all be together. We would prepare the Christmas tree just as you mentioned, on the 24th, and put biscuits and sweets and real candles just like the ones Vibeke has, with the tin holders! The tree preparation was the best part! there was Christmas music, many sweets did not make it to the tree and would get eaten xxx

Thank you for the nicest visit! Love paper crafts done with the kids out of tracing their hands and feet. We do Advent Candles Ceremony at our church. Always loved Rick Steve's videos about Christmas in Europe. Love the Scandinavian one's and the Switzerland episode when they harvested their tree in the snow by sleigh, skies and lantern. They talked about keeping the doors shut until the great reveal. Wonderful experience! Love everything the two of you do. ♥️♥️

Thank you for sharing Danish Hygge with us. I love how your Christmas season is celebrated...having lived in Germany years ago I remember the candles on the tree, and gifts of fruit, nuts, and cookies. Nice memories! Here in Tennessee, we are simplifying our celebration a bit and concentrating on Advent. Our Advent candles this year have an extra candle to light on Christmas morning in the middle of the green wreath circle. Blessings to both you and Vibeka, Diane. We women have so much in common around the world!

Advent wreaths are circular, representing God's infinite love, and are usually made of evergreen leaves, which "represent the hope of eternal life brought by Jesus Christ."Within the Advent wreath are candles that generally represent the four weeks of the Advent season as well as "the light of God coming into the world through the birth of Jesus Christ" although each of the candles has its own significance as well; individually, the candles specifically symbolize the Christian concepts of hope (week one), peace (week two), joy (week three) and love (week four)

That was delightful. Thank you ! We used the candles on the tree when I was a child. Some years ago, as a parent I bought the candles and holders for the tree but could not for the life of me figure out how to get the candles to stay properly upright ! They kept flopping off at unsafe angles so, sadly I got rid of them. If you or anyone has any tips on how to keep them upright, please let me know ! Tak !

When I was a child we used the real candles and the same candleholders as well. There was always someone sitting next to the tree with a bucket of water, and the tree wasn’t lit a lot, only on Christmas Day or eve.

We use an advent wreath each year, with three purple and one pink candle. The pink is for the third Sunday of Advent, as that is the time that marks more than halfway to Christmas. We change to white or gold on Christmas Eve and light those during the 12 days of Christmas (thru January 6th). We’ve done that in my family since I was a child. I’m in the States. I think it’s a more popular custom with Catholics and Lutherans than many others here

Well, you know how the song goes: Først skal træet vises // First the tree must be displayed Siden skal det spises // Later it shall be eaten Or as my mind said: First you gotta SHOW the tree... And THEN you gotta eat the tree xD In some ways it was pretty cool that everything on the tree was eatable. Like candy canes, peppernuts (small cookies) and such. Also pretty fun that we usually have our flag as well as alot of war related decorations on display on the tree, like drums and trumpets and sometimes even little soldiers like from the movie The Nutcracker and such 🤔 Entire verse of a danish Christmas carol, if someone would be curious: Højt fra træets grønne top // High from the green tree top Stråler juleglansen // Radiates the Christmas brilliance Spillemand spil lystigt op // Fiddler play merrily up Nu begynder dansen // Now begins the dance Læg nu smukt din hånd i min // Now (beautifully) put your hand in mine ikke røre ved den rosin // Don't touch that raisin! Først skal træet vises // First the tree must be displayed Siden skal det spises // Later it shall be eaten

In Germany they also have an advent wreath. There is a central dowel. The wreath is attached to the central dowel much like a maypole. It is suspended using a ribbona few inches above the table. In the wreath, there are candles about 4-5 inches long poked down in to the suspended wreath. There are 4 candles lit for each Sunday leading up to Christmas. It is quite beautiful and makes a beautiful centerpiece. My landlords always had a fresh tree that was lit with real candles. It is really quite stunning! Many Christmas traditions are shared throughout Europe. I enjoy learning about Denmark! Thanks Diane for all your videos! Have a merry Christmas and blessed New Year. 🎄
