The new V and A museum in Dundee, the city of Discovery, is just a 15 minutes drive and with the Leuchars train station only 2 miles away from Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh. During your vacation stay you can visit the Eden Estuary, located just to the north, being the third oldest nature reserve in the country, and famous for its birdlife. You'll get the chance to see seals, dolphins, and porpoises who are regular visitors to the Tentsmuir Forest sandbanks, along with osprey, deer, and peregrines who are all frequently sighted in the woods and lochs just inland.
Some of the places you can visit during your stay include Barry Mill, Carnoustie. This working traditional water-powered oatmeal mill is a great example of the industrial heritage of Scotland. At the mill, you'll discover more about the milling process with the guided tour from April to October. And if you time your visit right, you can watch the milling process which happens on a Sunday afternoon.
Falkland Palace, Fife. This magnificent National Trust property was once the home of the Crichton Stuart family. This is a truly fascinating place to visit with all of its architectural histories, that evolved from an imposing castle in the early 1300s to the grander palace that was completed in the early 1500s. You can admire the Tapestry Corridor the equally impressive Chapel Royal.
The Unicorn Preservation Society, Dundee. This amazing museum once housed in an old frigate built-in 1824. This is Scotland's only wooden warship left in existence. You can visit this historic ship and spend a day learning about its history. The British Museum of Golf, in St Andrews, is considered to be the home of golf. Here you can learn about the past players of the sport, the legendary golf tournaments and its origins in the middle ages. You can hear the story that has shaped the game and made it the phenomenon it is today.
Scottish Fisheries Museum, Anstruther. The Scottish Fisheries Museum is a multi-award winning national museum which tells the story of Scottish fishing from the earliest times to fishing in the present day. Fishing guided tours at this location take about 90 minutes, with themed tours are available. Scotland's Secret Bunker, Troywood. Here you can see where Scotland's power center would have been had the Cold War ever heated up. This was kept a secret for over 40 years under a Scottish farmhouse that hides the 24,000 square feet of emergency accommodation.
