Good video Mr Canterbury, not many speak on the importance of hygeine in the bush, and yes your mouth and teeth will cause you the worst pain there is. Also I must appologize in advance for telling everyone to keep pressing 8 on their keyboards. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!%$#@!

Dave, I appreciate that someone is willing to talk about things others would not mention. I found nothing funny or odd about the video, just plain, simple, straightforward facts, discussed in a straightforward manner. Good information to know and reminder for those who spend time in the woods. The next time my wife complains I smell like smoke, I can tell her with authority, "that's a good thing" :-)

In Australia we have the Melaleuca Trees which shed a nice papery cork-like bark that comes off in sheets. This makes great fire tinder as well as great toilet paper. The leaves are also used to produce tea tree oil, so if you make a leaf infusion you have a great anti-bacterial mouthwash. Aboriginal people used the bark for tinder, shelter building, bedding, the leaf infusion relieves headaches, sinus congestion and rheumatism. The bark is also used for bandages being very porous and impregnated with anitbacterial, antifungal tea tree oil. Just one of the many common plants we have in the Aussie bush that makes survival easier.

Finally, someone talks about hygiene in survival situations. It seems to a subject that most people just don't talk about, so I really appreciate that you took the time to talk about it. You probably answered all my questions regarding wilderness hygiene via fire and ashes. But maybe you could also demonstrate some of the stuff you mention? Like how much ashes exactly to use when making a cleaning solution/paste, cuz I hear that too much ashes creates a highly acidic substance that can burn you.

I believe hygiene out in the woods would be a common sense thing, But I swear i see about as many video's on how to drop a deuce in the woods as there are bow drill fires. And here is the funny, When you said spread your butt cheeks with your hands, my poor wife, who was washing dishes, screamed OH MY GOD, DID HE REALLY JUST SAY THAT??????? ................... Cant wait to show my grandson this one tonight............LOL..............

Great point, great vid. I have pooped in the woods my fair share and have found that just the deep squat position in its self leaves less "debris" than when on a crapper. I always dig my hole near a small tree that I can grab onto for balance and to hold that deep squat position longer and it makes getting up easier.

Hard-wood smoke is also an excellent anti-microbial/anti-bacterial cleanser, stand in the smoke and slowly turn, letting the smoke blow over your body, its a quick way to help a bit with smell, bacteria, etc. Its not a cure all, but on a 2-3 day trip in a pinch (strip down to base layer like moisture wicking thermals, will help disinfect the thermals as well), I've used a "smoke bath" quite often and who doesnt love the smell of a camp fire? As always, excellent video, not quite the most polite way to say it all, but you got a good bit of points across that most ppl dont wanna speak about, and I like that.

We have used the soft inner fibers of birch bark worked into a nest as makeshift tooth brushes, but there is no reason not to just pack one. Also carrying an extra water bottle with a nozzel on it, filled with soapy or alcohol mixed water to "squirt" up uour backside to break free debris, followed by wiping mostly to dry yourself works well. Creates less of a mess on your dedicated "wipping rag" making it easier to clean and sterilize. Mostly i just bring TP with me.

Finally, tips and tricks on personal hygiene in emergency situations, good stuff! I wish more people would take the time to think about/discuss this important issue, most never even consider it. I personally carry 1/2 a roll of TP in my get home bag, also have a bandanna and handkerchief to use should I get desperate. I also carry "travel-sized" toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, antibiotic ointment, and aspirin in the same bag. All of the above easily fits in one of the small pockets and weighs very little. I'm all about "smoothing it." :)

Some good info! I never knew that you can use ash and charcoal for hygienic purposes. This into does come in handy, can't tell you how important this info is. Spending a week or two at deer camp, fires serve even more purposes now. I always stood in the smoke for a little bit with my gear on, smoke covers the human scent and I have never had an issue with spoiling game smelling like smoke. Saves money from buying all that gear and cover scents that say they work but sometimes I wonder.

Dave, thanks for hitting that point about going to the bathroom in the woods. Just wanted to express appreciation, since it's not to "breezy" of a subject to broach or discuss. Also, toilet paper with or without the roll in a ziplock bag is a multi-use item (tissues, napkins, bandages, and fire starting- in addition to the typical use). It's also bio-degradable.

A lot of hygiene issues change during extended periods in the wilderness. For one, I don't haul in a lot of sugar or sugary snacks like chocolate with me - so my teeth don't need the same level of attention. Similarly, I tend to eat hot cereal rather than white bread, which greatly reduces the level of effort required to maintain a clean butt. As far as 'preparedness' goes, I highly recommend keeping up on your dentist visits to reduce the odds of serious dental problems when you head into the wilderness.
