I just learned about Kassiani on Frank Turner's podcast. Fascinating woman and painfully beautiful hymn.

Kassiani was the patron saint I was drawn to when I chose my patron saint upon baptism 4 years ago. This rendition of one of her greatest hymns is so uplifting and I can't wait to hear it again in person in a couple short days!

O Lord God, the woman who had fallen into many sins, having perceived Thy divinity received the rank of ointment-bearer, offering Thee spices before Thy burial wailing and crying: "Woe is me, for the love of adultery and sin hath given me a dark and lightless night; accept the fountains of my tears O Thou Who drawest the waters of the sea by the clouds incline Thou to the sigh of my heart O Thou Who didst bend the heavens by Thine inapprehensible condescension; I will kiss Thy pure feet and I will wipe them with my tresses. I will kiss Thy feet Whose tread when it fell on the ears of Eve in Paradise dismayed her so that she did hide herself because of fear. Who then shall examine the multitude of my sin and the depth of Thy judgment? Wherefore, O my Saviour and the Deliverer of my soul turn not away from Thy handmaiden O Thou of boundless mercy".

The Boston Byzantine choir has some of the "prettiest(?)" Orthodox music! I have the CDs but I do not have loop play on my player. Where I wish they'd download "First Fruits" on you tube. But I guess I could look for it too.

do you know where to buy the CD?

Hi "The Jessie and Sandra Show", the holy week is the "Mon to Sat" before Easter Sun day. why you don't do such experience and visit any of our Byzantine Churches, for more encounters with the Lord through our liturgy. GBU

This hymn came from God to Job to His daughter Kassiani (by his second wife Dinah, daughter of Jacob and Leah). Of course it was given 2000 years to Kassiani before Mary Magdelane would wash Jesus feet with her tears. So, what a beautiful hymn and literally fulfilled.

Hi! I'm here because I am doing a project about women in music through the ages. I find this hymn incredibly beautiful, but could someone let me what Holy Tuesday is? Please don't be offended my lack of knowledge, I am just curious and I don't know what this (I'm assuming holiday) is. Thanks!
@Mike0Powell7 жыл бұрын
Your project is probably already done, but it's part of the Orthodox Christian faith. Holy Tuesday is the Tuesday before the Resurrection (Easter), each of the days in the week before Easter are significant. See this page for more info, it explains better than I can.

Weren't there micro tonal notes in ancient byzantine music? I cant hear any here!
@psteele5557 жыл бұрын
Byzantine music still does have microtonal intervals. You don't hear them because this isn't a Byzantine choir. They are reading from Western notation.

Then how close is this to the original (up to the translation)? The same minus the quarter tones? This is really eye-opening for a piece of that region and of that time.

Is there a place I could buy this song? I just discovered it recently and I absolutely loved it! I love the Boston Byzantine Choir in general, so this was a real treat to discover! I looked on Amazon but I couldn't find anything. Do you know what CD this is from?
