My first big wow moment was at North when you trek up that one hill and see that giant machine against the mountain and 44:04 starts playing, and you just stop and stare at it with a combination of horror, wonder, and beauty and think about what happened to this land.

The five years ago, when I played this game, I cried at that moment. It's probably what cemented it as one of my favorite games. I was graduating university at that point and had a lot of uncertainty in my life, but this was a moment of incredible clarity and catharsis for me. I absolutely adored it.

I remember the first time hearing 56:03 so sudden, I got so hyped up, I was already involved in the experience and by the change in music I knew shit was going down. Man, It was years since I felt such emotion from a game that doesn't tells you anything at all, since you have to almost make your own conclusions and guesses from what's actually happening and the animations. This game really has a very special place in my heart.

i just played through this cause at the time this game was released i had a really dark and hard time in my life and had all other problems in the world so i couldnt get into anything - jesus what did i miss. Playing HLD i had these weird sensations of goosebumps, joy and also melancholy - a feeling, as u said, none of the newer games could have transported for me. It reminded me why i became a gamer - its about the emotions. This masterpiece of art is absolutly insane and deserves way more recognition than it already had. In the ages of origin, epic games and all this fastfood - this is a 5 star meal combined with 300 year old whine.

Talk about elevating the art form of a video game. Being middle aged and have grown up with video games it amazes me the amount of creativity that goes into the process (technicality, art, music, storytelling, etc). Beautiful.

The cutscene really explains the conditions of the developer of this game, as most hld players know, the developer has a heart defect that is literally killing him. in the game, (spoilers, btw) the "drifter" is infected with a disease that is also killing him/her. as you progress to try and find a cure, you find little triangles that go in boxes that lead you to the final boss. when you get enough, you find yourself in a voidish land containing *JUDGEMENT*, the final boss. after you defeat him, you are running to get out, being led by a black dog. (AKA anubis, the egyptian god of death) after escaping, you find yourself led by the dog to a rocky mountainside with a small fire. you sit down by the fire, realizing that there is no cure, and that you tried your best, but it was unsuccessful. like the developer's disease, which is INCURABLE. the entire storyline is not just about a drifter who must fight for his life, it is about the developer, fighting for HIS life in a truly unsuccessful way. he is still alive, but there is no cure for his disease. thanks for watching this and tell me what you think. bye!

A little correction (i'm just netpicking), it was the game designer, not (only?) the developper . And i think he used the difficulty curve of the game to represent how the Drifter and him live their lives with this disease. What i mean by that is, you maybe notice how some places of the game are pretty easy to beat and suddenly you find yourself struggling to beat a bunch of trashmobs you had no problems to deal with before. I think those difficulty peaks kind of represent the fact that for the game designer and the Drifter a heart attack can occur anytime and there is nothing you can do to anticipate it.

The southern zone to me really is where this game peaked, Your only real ally just died in front of you the illness is surely close to taking you as well but at the same time only one zone remains you are so close you must keep pushing on. The game play reaches its climax with most of your cool abilities and weapons unlocked allowing you to destroy the huge waves of what feels like increasingly desperate and dangerous enemies in stylish ways. The incredible contrast between the dead empty wasteland above ground and the complex sprawling facility below filled with the remains of a titan deliver amazing visuals whilst "The Gauntlet" slowly builds becoming more and more advanced until without you realising it grows from a quiet ambience to this deep but uncharacteristically determined backing and you stop for a moment and think "holy shit this game is awesome".

**Clicks video** **2 hours, 19 minutes and 20 seconds later...** Who am I. Whats my purpose. Am I truly free. Ever since the dawn of civilization, people have not been content to see events as unconnected and inexplicable. They have craved an understanding of the underlying order in the world. Today we still yearn to know why we are here and where we came from. Humanity's deepest desire for knowledge is justification enough for our continuing quest. And our goal is nothing less than a complete description of the universe we live in. ... **sees meme compilation in recommended videos** Oh shit, a new meme, hell yeah.

For the first part....Think of yourself sinking in water. Bubbles are rising up quickly, and yet...you can still look around to the illuminated bottom where there is a glowing light. You feel weightless, almost like a feather as you fall down slowly towards a light. You try to hold your breath, but soon it gets a bit harder to do it and you gasp out. What's this? You don't need to breathe! You continue to fall...and finally you are engulfed in the radiant light. Sleep now. Your work is done.~

i'm like five years late to this game lmao, but- everyone's talking abt the boss music and Panacea. all of which are great,, i mean, panacea is absolutely amazing and the boss tracks give me chills. but one of my personal favorites is wisdom's tragedy. something about the simple echoey melody in that track is just so soothing. its the moment of peace after destroying a chaotic boss.

I love listening to this with a steampunk lab ambiance for writing, the harmonic discord in the music sprinkled in with the more relaxing tracks makes for perfect background noise! Also "The Hermit" will drive me insane I'm sure. Something about that song puts me on edge and is very creepy...

The Hermit has to be my favorite boss soundtrack. It isn't my favorite boss, but it has that unsettling tone that makes you feel like you're fighting a legitimate monster, whereas the other boss themes seem to be more about getting you pumped up to fight.
@TheEpicPancake
@TheEpicPancake 10 ай бұрын
4 year old comment aside, The Hermit is also the only really monstrous boss in the game. The General is more of a solemn character, corrupted by the same crystal that's eaten the rest of the place. The Hierophant is more "human" in its conquests, doing so through social and religious manipulation instead of raw brutality. As far as theme goes, the General gets his somber fanfare that flows fantastically out of the cooldown at the end of Stasis Awakening, and the Hierophant gets those exalted soaring tones that both the religious theme and climb to the crest of the mountain deserve. I think all the boss themes hit equally hard in different areas.

The Last General perfectly evokes the tragic tale of the war The Hanged Man fought so long ago, no even remembers it. And he reawakens only to find out that the race he fought against back then (which is yours) still lives. All those years and the war isn't over. It feels like war never ends.
