great video! is there a way of linking the details and annotations to the location of the wall? i.e. if that wall needs to move in plan by some distance afterwards, its going to mess up your details, even though the detail doesn't change.

Thanks! The short answer is no. There are some items you can lock to the model, but not everything, so if the wall moves you are going to have to do some updating to the detail. You could also do drafting view details and link them in to your drawings. Pros and cons to each method.

I cut the section, placed callouts, created the details, placed them on the Detail Sheet. How do I reference them back into plan view, i.e. foundation plan, framing plan, etc?

Launch the section tool, and before you click to draw a new section, look at the top for a checkbox that says, “Reference Other View”. Then select the view you want to key in and THEN draw the section

I'm just going to the engineer, today I hope, with my first Revit project. With your help and inspiration I took a big bite and made my first one a tiny 4,780 square feet shack. Ha! I've started and played with plans in Revit for quite some time (since 2019) but never taken one through construction. I've been designing houses and remodels since 1984. Started with hand drafting and converted to AutoCAD Architecture back in 1996. I specialize in one-off custom houses. HUGE LEARNING CURVE but I'm committed this time to making Revit my standard. (Making schedules and legends be damned!) I look forward to your new course work as well! I'm excited for you and wish you the best!!! Sorry for writing a book here.

How would you show the plywood and shingles above the truss extend 1in past the truss?

Could do it a few ways, most commonly with drafting. Either draft the plywood and shingles extending over the fascia, or use Cut Profile on the actual roof to cut the structural layer back, or key in a drafting view detail that links to your standard detail.

@@HyperfineArchitectureI thought so. Do you find this process repetitive if you have a lot of views? I usually copy the roof in place, move and change the new roof layers to be plywood and shingles, then offset one inch. This applies to all views but Depending on the roof has its setbacks.

@@valeriepierre7297 not too much, certainly not more than annotating elevations. Depending on my roof assembly sometimes I model the overhang/rake as a separate roof, but never to the level of detail of 1". In a 1/4" section you wouldn't see that anyway. So you could draft it once in a typical wall section then group those elements and paste them into other sections. Or draft a typical detail and key it in, or maybe even create a detail component for your typical eave condition. You'll have to decide what's the most efficient for your workflow and consider the value added, if any, of modeling that level of detail.

Hi, is there a way to show my stud shaded in plan while keeping it like this in section?

For my wall structural layer I set the material cut pattern to be solid and dark grey, so it poches nicely in plan. Then in the sections I turn off wall cut patterns so they are all white.

Have you considered putting your studs using the beam system and columns so they show up automatically when you cut the section?

No. You don’t need to model every stud. And they wouldn’t show up in section anyway unless your section cut through a stud, which is not what you want to be showing in a section.

@@HyperfineArchitecture What if you are doing a building section and want to show the floor joists - typical for residential designs. Would you use the beam system then? or show detail components for the joists?
