Inflation Inflation Inflation! Definitely a hot topic of today. With everything happening I am interested to see other periods of history that experienced increasing inflation, and see what happened to there. As usual this was interesting to learn about- it explains a lot. Actually my grandpa is of German descent- his father, my great grandpa, moved to Canada from Germany in the 1920s (along with his brand new wife, their 3 months old infant son, and several members of their extended family.) We asked my grandpa why would his Dad want to move to a new unknown country, with a different language he doesn't speak, with no job, a new wife and newborn baby ... he replied "In those days it was very hard to live in Germany and you really couldn't get anywhere." Now this video helps me understand 'why' a bit better- with over 10 rate changes of over 100,000,000x for the price of a stamp in one year! No wonder they thought to try taking their chances somewhere else "unknown." I'm sure he felt he had a better chance to support his new family somewhere else (anywhere else, even cold cold cold Canada!). I love to see how different events around the world are connected, and sometimes connected with my personal history, too. Thanks for this episode, Lawrence! It was great!

Thank you very much. Yes we are all touched by history of our parents and grandparents. Today there is so much I want to ask my grandparents and my parents but they are long gone

Hello, this vidéo shoes the historical deterioration of currencies due to global inflation after WW1. And the inevitable progression towards WW2 with the economic challenge of restoring safe currencies based on work and tangible results. Overcharging stamps is too easy despite our philatelic thirst. It's my opinion, mine but in any case this video is well done for pedagogy. Thanks

I remember hyperinflation in Poland in late 80s. Nothing to compare with the German one but still it was pain in the neck.

In Zimbabwe in the 1990s, it came close

The few who had wisely converted their bank savings to actual gold and silver Reichsmark coins before the inflationary periord fared better than the general population. No wonder in all bad economies, it is always best to keep a portion of one's assets in foreign currency, precious metals and other fungible, liquid things of value. These hyperinflationary German seem easy to get as singles but more difficult to find on covers or postcards.

True but for the average German, who thought this would happen in the space of 6 months.

Believe it or not but in the 1980s, inflation in Zimbabwe was just as bad.
