I started building the Alexander Piano when I was 16 years old and completed it on the 24th October 2009 when I was 20. It measures 5.7 meters long. So far, a handful of famous people have played it.
A BOOK ABOUT THE ALEXANDER PIANO
A booklet written by retired piano technician Stephen Newman is a record of the pianos construction. Lots of people all over the world have been buying these booklets. Each copy is personally signed. These are available from my official website. Famous people who have the booklet include Spike Edney from QUEEN, Michael Houstoun, Artur Cimerro, Lindsay Vannoy from Sir Elton John's team, and many more. These are available at:

Funds are distributed between maintaining the Alexander Piano and the building of the next big piano!

That's true. That fact is linked to inharmonicity. There's less inharmonicity in bass section by not having to make that thick bass strings. Short piano : short but thick bass strings (looser tension) = more inharmonicity. Longer piano: longer but thinner bass strings (higher tension) = less inharmonicity. The amount of inharmonicity affects pianos sound quality quite a lot.

I love how the bass notes ring out on a nice piano with lovely resonant bass tones however I have no way of knowing how they sound on this particular piano as I am listening to it via inexpensive small speakers which are likely to be incapable of conveying the piano's timbre to my ears with a great deal of accurately. The audio pre-amp on my computer's system board and the amplifier between the computer and the speakers, isn't likely to do a very good job either, of enabling my sound reproduction system' to have fidelity to the sound of piano. I can say the piano looks quite nice though- my video is 720p. Rather unusual layout of the pins in the pinblock. I don't have a good view of the layout of the strings. I can't see the bridge. I can't see any soundboard. I can't tell if there is any metal being used to help keep string tension from bending wood and changing relative tension on the strings as they are brought up to pitch. I will say I often prefer the sound of older pianos, made before the age of one-piece cast-iron plates, to the sound of modern pianos with cast-iron plates. Usually not as loud. Tone is less strident. More of a "singing" tone. But I can't tell if this piano has metal support for string tension or not, and if so whether it is one-piece cast-iron or multiple pieces. And because I have only little speakers, I am quite unable to appreciate the instrument's nuances of timbre. I enjoyed the performance though. I've tuned lots of different kinds of pianos. Everything else being the same, generally the longer the strings the easier it is to get a good tuning and more you can count on the piano to have a stable tuning. So I looked forward to hearing from this long piano.

I watched this piano being built. I had the great excitement of hearing the first notes being played since and followed it all over the country. I played this piano when it was a tad heavy in the action and now since Adrian has made it much easier. I have heard the most incredible concert pianists perform on it when it was at the Evans farm shed and in Dunedin. It's nice to see people taking so much interest, after all his hard work.

I agree but would it sound like it does when played live? I thought the distinctive sound of a piano was due to the resonance of the played strings with the unplayed strings and you wouldn't get that if the roots and harmonics of the different keys were separated from interaction with each other.

@@benmcdonnell4167A good software version of a piano takes into account all the harmonics and resonance that you are talking about. It took me a few minutes to realize why it sounded "weird" and NOT with ground-shaking bass. It's because those long bass strings can be tuned tightly enough that they're crisp and clear without the woofiness that we're accustomed to hearing from typical pianos. Technically it’s mostly the change in the thickness/gauge of the strings that allows the bass notes to resonate so clearly. This piano can use much thinner bass strings because the ridiculous length of it lets the tension and note be preserved. Thicker strings add more inharmonic notes that conflict with the underlying fundamental. In other words, the thicker a string is, the less it acts like a string.

Wow, such great playing of Bach's little Fugue in G minor BWV578. Especially on a single keyboard! It's originally a pipe organ piece of course. Brought back memories of David Childs (once a Christchurch Cathedral organist and choirmaster) , when he was teaching at Waitaki Boys' High School in Oamaru NZ. Just 'up the road' from you in Dunedin...I was his Organ pupil in 1973, learning this piece on the lovely old organ at the school. I also had to learn the classic Hymns, and my suspicions were never aroused about this, until Mr Childs said "Ok, Tom, seeing that you can now play them , you can play in morning assembly so I don't have to ! ". The first time was hugely stressful, as I picked the most popular hymn and the 800 boys sang it so loudly I simply couldn't hear the organ at all, halfway through. And of course keeping track of the number of verses, and doubling the length of the very first note so the singing doesn't start late . ...thus a lot of pre-class stress for a simple 16yo country boy. Sadly David Childs died suddenly from a very nasty flu, in late 1999, during his tenure at Christchurch Cathedral.

As a guitar player, I'm very aware of the differences between strumming close to the bridge of the guitar vs. closer to the octave fret. The relative distance from the bridge matters. Bridge-side, you get very limited overtones, the other very rich with overtones. For that reason, I think the hammer design of this piano could use some reproportioning. With much longer strings, you also need to strike those strings in the right spot. I suppose that's why this piano sounds quite dark to me!

Very interesting and impractical piano. Everything above middle C sounds very piano-like but the bass really has an amazingly different sound, almost like a bowed instrument. It makes sense, with that impressive length the strings are going to be at a much higher tension and I wouldn't be surprised if they're using different gauge strings as well. Very cool.
@parkerplace2910

...It probably adds to the sound to place both microphones at the base end strings of the piano and none at the treble, can also be edited after recording as well.

The point of having such long strings is that they don't have to be thick like short bass strings.
@JohnBJr
@JohnBJr 2 жыл бұрын
@Corby Dipsen I don't claim to know anything about a 20' long piano, just bass of both upright and guitar style. I could use the same gauge on all four strings with different tension and I like to lean in that direction with a set that has a close ratio of gauges. These strings must be custom wound for that length so the gauge can be in a range. High tension has a crisper attack with less give in the string. Unless you built this piano, you could be a little more decent. There is room for both yours and JV's statement, (setting aside the insults)

Lovely that Bach was brought to this incredible instrument. It’s better than I would have thought possible and credit to Mann without seemingly any of the “historical secrets” brought about via a manufacturing tradition. The piano seems to have clean and full tone throughout the compass.

The overtones on the bass notes are just fantastic! You get almost the same type of reaction between an upright bass and electric bass. Electric bass is usually 34 inch scale. Length where an upright bass is 42 inches. That’s why an upright sounds deeper and fatter, because they overtones of the extra string length.

Wow, this video is special to me - I remember as a kid starting out with music and learning piano, I was around 12 yrs of age, and I searched about pianos being made and saw the video of this man creating his own piano (which shocked me because it is one of the most difficult things to create, and so sophisticated). He said in an interview he had that he does not plan on doing anything with it, but now I saw this and I am so happy it is taken further! The reason it is special is also the fact that the time I started out with music and learning piano and saw this video, is when all was still normal in my life - but now the past few years has taken the lives of all my family members but one, and I have even lost my piano amongst other things like my home, etcetera.

@@andyokus5735 I appreciate reading your story. It makes one realize that within this world there are so much pain, regret, grief, and many more things which I'd just skip. There is one greater joy, though; whether a life led in tears, joy or both brings you to your death bed, know this: there is much better of a life after the death of earthly life. My troubles has led me to writing poetry, whether or not it's "literature of artistic merit" I do not know, but there are a few (unpublished - probably not worth being published) books of poetry or poetry compilations of me, that I compiled. These poems are the beautiful product of ugly processes.

Indeed, I don’t know why he chose to play organ music on this instrument. It’s not as if Bach didn’t write any other fugues...
@bradellis8217
@bradellis8217 2 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, I wondered if these were Busoni’s transcriptions of Bach, at least the fugue. There would be some irony there, as Ludwig Bösendorfer, working at Busoni’s request, designed a 97-key grand piano that extends down to the 32’ low C, matching the organ’s lowest pitch, and that those pianos, “The Imperial“ (I’ve played one) require great delicacy and care throughout the bass and tenor register, since the overstringing creates both more fullness and more potential muddiness due to even more sympathetic vibration than most concert grands. I say “ironic,” because from the video, it looks like this design eschews overstringing, which isn’t likely in keeping with the overstuffed opulence generally associated with Busoni. That said, opinions are like… nostrils: everybody has one. 😉

@@alexanderpianos1038 That is excellent! As a stagehand and sound guy who has moved many a piano that presents an interesting challenge to move, but I think its lovely flatter sides (as opposed to the more "Ruebenesque" Grands curves) would be much easier to build a road case around - I think it should rest on a long dolly, long side down (with a generous number of heavy duty caster wheels appropriately spaced underneath that) and panels that interlock with the dolly board and each other to cover it. Also consider how the piano will be gently tilted over from playing to transporting - a custom ez-tilt or similar would be very functional for this. Its overall length alone would certainly limit some of the halls it could be brought into, but it would be incredible in a hall like the Pike's Peak Center in Colorado Springs or something similar. If you need a drawing of what I'm visualizing I'd love to draw it for you. Brilliant work on that indeed!
