Hi Guys, Thanks for your views and support. I'd like to clarify a few common questions / comments about this device: -I think the maximum speed I saw was around 400 RPM. -Yes, this is effectively just a coilgun bent into a closed loop. -Yes, this the principles are very similar to a particle accelerator. However, in most particle accelerator configurations, an *electric* field is used to generate most of the forward acceleration, whereas magnetic fields are used for confinement (or focusing, in the case of an electron beam). Creating useable forces from electric fields requires tremendous voltages, and special electrical insulators to prevent arcing. -Yes, the track could probably be balanced by the use of another ball 180 degrees out of phase, but it would increase the complexity of the coil control considerably to ensure the balls remain approximately 180 degrees apart. Left to their own devices, I've found that the phases between multiple balls will drift at random. -Yes, a similar device could be created using an electrical current through liquid mercury. This is known as magnetohydrodynamics. Mercury is very expensive and difficult to acquire in the United States because of the health hazards. -It's *not* a perpetual motion machine (implying 100% efficiency). In fact, I believe it's less that 5% efficient. 95% of the energy going into this from the battery is just heating up the coils. -It's *not* capable of flying like a "UFO". I think this idea comes from the notion of "inertial propulsion" where some people have mistakenly confused the torque generated by a high speed gyroscope with translational force required for flight. A gyroscope on a shaft can appear to lift itself against gravity, but the lifting is generated by torque, so it depends on having one end of the shaft firmly forced against the ground. -It's *not* going to be able to recover power from the moving ball with a "generator" coil. This is because the ball is not magnetized. This would be possible with a permanent magnet ball, but the efficiency of the recovery would probably be extremely poor.

Hey, I always imagined something like this for a "gun" type design, where the shape of the "gun" would be a 6 or 9 with a gate at the junction of the neck of those numbers. when you wish to fire the "gun" the junction would open, turning the circle design into a open barrel design. What are your thoughts, would it be possible to open the junction accurately and quickly enough to allow for that, with the 6/9 design I'd imagine centrifugal force/centripetal force would accommodate a lower angle of turn, pushing it to the new lane which would essentially be the barrel. also plumbers tape or teflon tape is cheap and easy to access, and cheap to reduce friction. lastly look at stuff used for liquid cooling PC's there are acrylic (plexiglass) or PETG (polyethylene terephthalate), they are full tube's and will have less imperfections and blemishes, and you can get better tools to shape them perfectly. using fittings to build rigidity.

In the 80’s I created one using old-school techniques. The track was much larger, on the order of a couple of meters around. The track was three rails, with the outer rails conductive neutral and the middle rail non-conductive, but with a hot conductive surface right before each coil. The metal ball would make contact between the hot and one or the other neutrals, and the ball itself completed a circuit that energized the next coils (or several coils). The middle rail wasn’t actually conductive like the outer rails. Rather, it had a conductive surface only where it needed it to allow the ball itself to make or break the circuit. No microcontroller. No PCB boards. Just wires (lots and lots of wire), heavy duty foil, solder, the rails, bracing, and a safety shield. And sparks, but those were fun! And it was fast AF. Only friction, air resistance, and probably residual impedance to limit the speed.
@ddegn2 жыл бұрын
That sounds so cool! I'd love to see a video of it in action. Those sparks sound like a lot of fun. I just ordered a bunch of magnet wire and 1" ball bearings myself. I plan to go the opposite direction and use a microcontroller. I'm planning on using the microcontroller to optimize the timing of the coils.

I had considered making a segment that could open the track or at least the middle rail, and allow the projectile to escape (shoot), but never did. As a projectile launcher, it wouldn’t have been that good. I measured the speed to be around 120 m/s IIRC. That’s about 1/3 the speed of sound, so way slower than most real guns. Also, accuracy would’ve sucked because of an unstable round ball. But, it still merited a safety shield for the operator. It didn’t work perfectly. Depending on speed and code efficiency, a microcontroller may just not be fast enough. An analog circuit is only affected by propagation of the signals, rise times etc... In a digital circuit with microcontrollers you have processing happening on top of all the rest and it adds lag.

@Yranax2 жыл бұрын
@@teddycook1299 im in electrical engineering for over 20 years. And the time constant of this system is dominated by the mechanical properties. A uC is way faster than the hole system, even faster than the power switches that are used. So there is no problem with latency. An analog circuit could do the job, but a uC will be more convinient and has the ability to controle complex tasks. It is almost impossible to create an analog circuit, that will position multiple balls to a wanted set point. Uc will do the job and even more. and 210MHz are just a number, right. the rise and fall times could be way faster. And another thing to mention, a uC hase some handy peripherals. For example, an ADC in combination with DMA and PWM could controle the hole system. There is no complex calculation to be done to controe the inductors, so there is no advantage in using analog circuits.

I noticed a defect in the design of your track. When making your track, you neglected to subtract the length of the track, that is occupied by each of the coil modules. This additional, strait, segment of added track, warped the perfect circle, produced by your printer. Of course it still works. But, I would like to see how stable it would operate with the correction.
@RyanBarnes2 жыл бұрын
Came here to say exactly this. The coil modules add that bit of straight that cause the ball to travel in a short but straight line. This causes the ball to impact on the track losing momentum. Could the coils be designed in such a way that they could slide over your track segment rather than be an extension of it?

Nice idea, I'd suggest adding a little more signal processing and timing systems to the control circuitry, working out the velocity of the accelerated mass and adjusting the magnetic pulse to account for the speed. As the ball gets faster you seem to be hitting the limits of your timing control system as there does appear to be a maximum speed (based on the audio). You could move the light gate sensors a little further from the coils and add a small delay or compensator to the trigger pulse that can be adaptively changed based on the calculated velocity to maximise the achievable top speed.

@repalmore2 жыл бұрын
The balls ran slower after you added the wall to keep them from flying out. I'm sure you know this already but as a sphere rolls the surface near the axis of rotation has a lower surface feet per minute than the equator of the sphere. Is it possible the arc of the track is near that of the steel ball? If you make the track noticeably larger in it's cross section diameter only the equator of the steel ball will be in contact regardless of where it is on the track. In example, 25mm ball make the track 40mm or more if you like. On a completely different note, hope it's OK to live a little vicariously through you, if you were to move the sensors away from the coils and use something like an arduino to trigger the mosfet and programmatically change the timing off the coils so the ball can be hit harder and longer for the higher speeds. You can measure the time between two sensors as a tachometer for ball speed. Just a thought.

Nice project. Comment from an EE - I think your speed is being limited by the slow decay of the coil currents, due to your back-emf quenching diodes. The voltage available to reduce the current will be only around 0.8V during turn-off which will give a long tail to the current waveform, holding the ball inside the coil for a while. You could try a few diodes in series or even back-to-back zeners for coil quenching to increase the current decay speed and I bet that will speed up your accelerator. Best of luck, a year too late!
@HyperspacePirate2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I've played around with this factor on a coilgun and found there's an optimal series resistance with the flyback diode to quench the coil current faster (damping ratio or some such). One of the more elaborate schemes I've seen was one where the flyback diode current was dumped into the next coil. Seems a lot more efficient, but more complex to design

Dude this is amazing! Small improvements might be to test the friction of the 3d print material and see if you can replace or cover it with something with less friction allowing less energy loss and higher speed, then maybe even doubling the electro magnets you use to improve output, but I think at very high speeds and a high latency detection system causes a max speed, so if you could possibly try and reduce latency or go around this problem, one trick is to have a speed sensor on the track and keep track of the balls speed, with this info calculate with a separate pc board the time it takes that it would travel to the magnet and then activate it with this method, also having the current infa-red sensors to improve the calculations? secondly I like the open design but the balls might hit into the walls of the magnets or even as seen fling off, so to prevent this make a better curve at the top wall not allowing it to fling off and making it perfectly line up with the magnet walls, since even a 1mm difference gap could cause energy loss and stagger the performance. I am highly invested in this since I find this extremely interesting and I would love to see how these ideas might improve your current design!!

Enclose the tubes and attach port connections to the pipe and the metal ball can be used as a pump as it passes by the port holes to pump air, or even element 115 as a conductor with flow of it to power other systems.

one limiting factor is the flex of the system, it saps a lot of momentum. design a curved piece 1/16 or 1/8 of the circle depending on the size of your printer, that can be assembled ( peg on one end, hole on other, and a slot for a nut and bolt ) make it reasonably thick, a centimeter or two ( about half an inch ) with thick printed braces that would speed it up a bit. and maybe mounting holes? to mount it to something heavy as well, to reduce losses of the entire assembly moving around then maybe a tuner? mount the sensors closer to the coils, and add a delay circuit, with a potentiometer to control when the coil should shut off or how long it should be active for?

Only limitation is material stress would only take so much centrifugal force before the ring shatters , so in theory if the outer ring and the moving pieces inside it can be influenced magnetically to spin , with enough force it would counter the center weight and it’s own weight , meaning less fuel and force needed to propel or take off .

If this could be the spinner and another mechanic that could shoot it, that be interesting to see how powerful that is, but you need a counter weight for that spin and ball ofc.

who needs stability. that wobbly motion might make an interesting device in a roomba-ish form factor, maybe a cleaning/polishing tool or bot. could one influence direction by timing pulses to those coils in the direction you want it to move (or on the opposite side if it's more a "pushing" thing)? all it needs is a flat housing and wheels...

I love this project! I wonder if it is possible to create a near 100 percent efficient device by adding more coils, thereby levitating the ball and preventing contact with the surface while going around. The timing would be difficult. Also, I wonder what it would be like if the ball were magnetized, and the track was a copper tube instead. copper tubes have very interesting interactions with magnetized objects traveling through them. The ball would be doing the same amount of work but at a much lower speed I assume. Anyway, this is three years after the fact, so my fascination is a bit late to the party. Great video.

If you use a circular tube and connect 3 disc-shaped figures, you can create a magical effect such as the movement of the planet Earth. How to install the discs: One must be inside the second. Of course, the first disc must be smaller than 3.
@ghooustsilvr21629 ай бұрын
Note: It is recommended to connect the first discs to the second with two intersecting points diagonally, and the second and third also diagonally, but the two diagonals must be opposite because the movement will generate rotation of the disc on the diagonal as an axis. I will leave the rest to your imagination.

the brightness of the room will still effect it, the IR leds dont matter, its the LDR that does. but, to avoid that issue, you could use a different form of triggering. I foolishly wrote a comment on your first project without watching this one, but, the same thing I mentioned there would be applicable here. (mosfets may not be getting turned on 100%) also, with the gate capacitors, they may be getting slowed down while turning on because of the input capacitance of the fet having to be charged up (miller capacitance) Kick ass videos sir.

Cap the top do you can harvest the cinytifical force, you might be able to get lift if you can control the speed the magnets are going off, possibly finding a slicker surface for the inside or a high temp paint

If this is powered up more…. would it produce anti gravitational effects? A helicopter has no wings… but the uplift I would assume is created by the great gyroscoping blades ?? This device clearly has motion … how could lift be obtained?The energy created could in theory be translated into lift?Does the ball have magnetic properties and what if it did? What if you opposing field interactions? Could the fields be bent in some way as a result of electromagnetic interplay??? Will you try these things and report back please. In the same way magnets can repulse, can this repulsion be optimised and be kind of propulsion??? I hope you toy with these possibilities. Great project 👍Could the centrifugal type force be some how made to push down wards? It’s rather frustrating… because basically it’s looks like the outward force is sufficient.. if push downwards… to make your device hop upwards a little. I’m sure you are on to something

I know this videos a year old but just because I’ve built a few structures or two saw a couple points I’d add some extra bracing so you can reach greater speeds , partly the reason why the hardon collider is underground so it doesn’t move. Just food for thought not hating love the work.

Would be nice to have a state estimator of the ball position based on the EMF of the ball passing through the magnets. Then you can tune the phase between ball and magnets to optimize the acceleration of the ball. Add another ball to balance the system.

id like to see -a stiffer rail for the balls so it doesnt deform as the balls travel through it. -some kind of alignment tool for the track so the joints are smoother or 3D printing a solid track so there are no joints. would make the winding part more annoying though.

Solution for faster acelerator is the time that next coil will be turn on, that can base on the time ball travel from coil(1) to coil(2) => speed +guess speed after coil(3) => coil(4) turn on and loop for coil(1) - coil(3), just what in my mind, i have enough component to make it but i dont have time :(

Hello, Excellent build!! Now, can I ask you to perform one test? Can you build two identical prototypes with the four coils/four sensors...and then attach them by the center, make them (the steel balls) rotate opposite to each other on each unit... I believe they (both) would stabilize together...then just set the whole assembly on a weight scale... I am almost certain the assy will lose weight the faster it goes. Thanks for showing such incredible test!!

With a pair of IR sensors per coil you would be able to estimate the speed of the ball and adjust the trigger threshold/timing accordingly. It would of course increase the complexity of the control circuit. You could maybe do it with the 4 sensors you have now using them to estimate speed between coils.
