Wendy and Tobie create garden pots using a mixture of cement, sand, perlite, peat moss and a bonding agent and old towels. They use various container shapes to create interesting garden pots. The best thing about hypertufa is that they look like cement pots but weigh much less. Once planted they are easy to move. You can do a grouping of hypertufa pots and cement balls to create an interesting feature in your garden.

You need to neutralize the alkaline in the cement with water and vinegar soak before planting. Also the longer you cure the stronger they are. Love the shapes and sizes, great job through the wind.

Amazing! The idea of these being lightweight is definitely the selling point here. I can't wait to see what you end up planting in these and how you'll provide drainage for the ones w/out a hole in the bottom. or what you'll plant that doesn't need the drainage ; ) i'm thinking and thinking... what else could you use these for? I know someone will think of something or things. Umbrella stand comes to mind, but then who uses those now and if fact, why did they ever? lol - you could even roll towels or washcloths in them and put them on a bathroom vanity! the sky is the limit, which must be why i love containers so much. can't wait to see what you do next. ty for this awesome video!

Thank you, Pam. These really are fun to make and the fact that you can have a cement looking pot that is lightweight is a bonus. Be sure to watch the next two videos and you will see how it all comes together. Have a Gourd-geous Day!

I’m curious why you added the mortar mix. This is the first time I’ve seen this recipe for hypertufa.

Hi Jackie, we use the mortar mix as a binder which helps when draping the material over the form to create the pot. Thank you for the question. Have a Gourd.geous Day!

Um don’t know that that mixture is really hypertufa, more like lightweight concrete draped pots, but enjoyed your enthusiasm
