Timecodes for new material:
-- 0:02:21
-- 0:40:40
-- 1:26:27
-- 1:45:44
*original version: • Hypno vs Poliwrath - P...
Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle*
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle
-- *The badge-boost glitch is not restricted at all
-- *Skipping the Rocket Hideout & Marowak is allowed
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- My Pokemon has perfect DVs
-- The Trash-Can-Puzzle is automatically solved so times are not affected by RNG
-- The bike is allowed (the bike skip is not)
-- Skipping the bike is not allowed
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:
-- Clefairy, Clefable, Grimer, Muk, Chansey, Staryu
Versus Format Clarifications:
-- In this video I played each Pokemon independently, never thinking to have them compete against each other.
-- Only after results were in did I realize that they make a compelling duo to face each other
-- I always try my hardest when using each Pokemon
-- I'm human and I make mistakes, I'm sorry if these impact your favorite! (Had to apologize, I'm Canadian and it's contractually required.)
Yellow Version changes from Red/Blue:
1. You cannot use Dig/Escape Ropes in Bill's House or the Pokefan Club
2. You cannot talk to the trainers in Blaine's gym to battle them
3. Surge, Sabrina, and Blaine do not have Good AI
4. The Elite Four have better movesets
5. Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni have higher level teams
6. Blaine doesn't use Super Potions are full HP
7. The rival picks his eeveelution based on the outcome of the first two battles.
-- Lose in the lab: Vaporeon
-- Win in the lab and skip route 22: Flareon*
-- Win in both locations: Jolteon
-- *You cannot lose on route 22 because you blackout
Terms:
-- STAB
-- Same-Type-Attack-Bonus - a 1.5x damage multiplier
-- Stat Experience
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of effort values. You can invest in all stats until they max
out at 65535
-- DVs or Determinate Values
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of IVs (individual values), these range from 0-15
Resources:
-- Gen 1 Stat Calculator: pycosites.com/pkmn/stat_gen1.php
-- All Trainer Pokemon have IVs (DVs) of 89888 (hp, atk, def, spd, spc)
-- All Trainer Pokemon have EVs of 0
-- Gen 1 Crit Rates: www.smogon.com/rb/articles/cr...
-- Crit rate is determined by dividing base speed by 512
-- High crit rate moves determine their rate by dividing base speed by 64
-- All crits have a 1/256 to fail, even if the rate is 100%
-- Crits don't multiple damage by 2, it's a formula based on level

It is nice to explain the Psychic debacle. Also it is perfect that you realized how Hypnosis is not a good way to cope-out out of strategic decisions. The fact that you actually went back, re-edited the video, made multiple new playthroughs, shows just how mature emotionally and secure of a person you are. Another video marker could have said "you are wrong, I am right" Thank you Scott !!

He proved that if time or concern about luck isn't an issue, Hypnosis is great. The issue is that the latter bites into the former (if you need to force lucky events, you need time to do it), and in the end, we all care somewhat about time, don't we? Wonderful run.

The thing that I find more surprising is that Poliwrath can be a sweeper in Gen 1 Kanto because it otherwise has good stats and a diverse TM movepool. It is like this despite not have a set up move and a weakness to Psychic.

The fact that you pay this much attention to your viewers is incredible. I've seen so many youtubers that leave replies or hearts on comments but basically ignore/forget the advice for their next video, I'd given up on leaving advice, but you are clearly cut from a different cloth! I was wondering if i'd have to skip any videos featuring mons with hypnosis or sing but now i'm actually looking forward to those, this is quickly becoming my favourite channel

Hey Tim, I will always try to read every single comment. I can't write responses to all of them, because how could I do 10 playthroughs for a single 2 hour video??? As a creative person (I used to write music) I know that being close to the creative art can blind me. It's easy to get trapped in bias, habit, or what just works. Rather than really push for something else. Also, I don't always know what's best. So many of the designs, features, and ideas on the channel came from comments like yours. Really, we're all sort of building the channel & content together.

I think I speak for all your fans when I say you are truly incredible! I'm always blown away by your work and all the small things you do be it the layout with move sets, accurate stat updates throughout the play through, the pokemon's emotions throughout the run like when they're happy or damaged is awesome, bloopers, I just love it all! @@tsawy6 Yeah but you don't really need it until the elite four and maybe Yellows version of Giovanni. Koga and Sabrina won't be as bad without the fighting weakness. The only gym leader I'd worry about is Surge but in Yellow version he only has one pokemon and I saw Poliwhirl get by the tougher version of Surge pretty easily on Van Man's video. Yellows version of Erika is tougher but I think with the choice between Ice Beam and Psychic it won't be that bad.

Man, that's a lot of dedication to the craft. I'll be honest, whenever I got recommended one of these soloruns, I usually rolled my eyes because surface level it just doesn't sound like much of anything. After all, most of us beat the game with only their starter at some point, right? Yeah, after really getting into these types of videos and listening to your reasoning and data points, I know that there's more to it for sure. Also, trying it myself. Great to hear your reasoning for multiple playthroughs and changing strategies at the end. I think the way you take these challenges on really scratches that curiosity itch for many of us viewers. Well, first, genuinely thank you for going the extra mile to address concerns! And I get the reason you didn't do some of it, for me personally the issue always comes down to the issue of the sheer strength of intentionally badge boost glitching, and the advantage that can give. And you even have the example of this in snorlax vs snorlax where you have to purposely keep a move that actually hurts snorlax to make the late game better, which slowed it down, but when you -learn- the boost move in the late game, it's only severe benefit. So when two pokemon head to head a badge booster will nearly always have the advantage. It fixes many damage ranges, boosts survivability by a lot, and in many cases even gives you the speed advantage, something that's extremely strong in gen 1. I get why you chose what you did, genuinely, it just personally felt frustrating because therer were options (the easiest being double team) for poliwrath. When I leave a constructive criticism comment, like this one, my intention isn't ever to make you go back and redo a video, or to feel the need to justify your work or why you did what you did, my hope always is, if it's good criticism, it lets you think about future videos. For my last one it was designed a bit to bring up the question of 'is it better to always let each pokemon do it's best, or is it better to try to keep them on a more even playing field. This one was just close enough I think these sort of talking points really mattered, because 1:15-2 minutes real time feels like something that easily could go either way depending on very few factors.

Always had a soft spot for Hypno ever since first using it in a playthrough I did over ten years back on FR/LG. An absolute monster if played properly in any generation, I think. Y'know, for all the comments on the original video talking about Amnesia for Poliwrath, I'm not sure it would really benefit from having it unless we're replacing something on its starting moveset with it. All the time spent as a Poliwag and/or Poliwhirl would probably slow it down more than just powering through without it, but altering its starting moveset to include it seems unfair for a versus video. Even though you're starting with final stage Pokémon at level 5 instead of evolving them during the run, at least that's something both competitors get to benefit from instead of just one. Anyway, thanks for the extended reupload! It's awesome that you'll put all this time into creating these videos, but still be willing to go back in afterward and add even MORE to them if you end up missing something or to address questions/feedback in the comments.

I still would've loved to see you go for Jolteon over Flareon so Polywrath could've taken advantage of Ninetale's tail whip and plowed through the champion much more consistently. Other than that, extremely impressive that you did all this extra quality work! Easy subscribe!

Such an impressive effort to re-upload! Fantastic video and great to see how close they ended up being - I thought Hypno would be more comfortably better given badge boost hijinks and typing.

This extended video was fantastic. I do wonder how the rematch in Kanto remake of Gen 3 would be like with Poliwrath better stats and improvement. But yea, this was great! Understandable on adding these bits!

Awesome video! I'm shocked at how well Poliwrath did! Very strong move pool I guess. You mentioned Poliwhirl might end up being better because of its speed, amnesia and lack of fighting type, very curious to see if that's the case!

Wow, you're awesome for doing this, and you've actually tried almost every strategy that recommended to you in the comments, and for that I really respect you and all your efforts to make them work. Well done 😊. By the way, poliwrath can only have access to amnesia as pre-evolution move . So whenever you've evolved Poliwhirl at(or above) level 41, you'll get a poliwrath with amnesia- that's the only legit way to get that. If you would allow that it wouldn't be a fair fight against Hypno, so I'm glad that you didn't do that. 😊 That's why I think Poliwath should have faced onter stone evolution like Exeggutor. Because fully evolved stone evolution pokemon tend to have bad moves, because of no access to level up moves of thier evolution line. But overall it was nice to see how close Hypno and Poliwrath were. Also, you've made the right call to not rely on hypnosis that much, with both pokemon. At first glance, anyone can make that mistake of overusing hypnosis in a playthrough, because sleep is broken in gen 1,and it sounds nice on paper, but in actual practice like you've mentioned earlier, that's an awful coin flip 😔. Hypnosis is a fool's gold for slower pokemon. Anyway, I had a great time, and thanks again for making me have a good time. 😁

I’m working on the fire-stone evolutions right now and you’re so right. They have really bad level up moves. I’m excited to see how Poliwrath does in the future when it gets amnesia!

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon yup it's so painful, I'm glad that they've fixed it in gen 4. Most stone evolution have some good stats and good moves if you are willing to evolve them at level 40-50😅, and that's really challenging I can tell you that. About Poliwrath you can do a run with amnesia, just to test it for fun, or maybe in gen 2 where it get better, it could be interesting 🤔😁.

Thank you for doing this. I love Poliwrath, and seeing you use Hypnosis far more with it than Hypno, despite being able to two shot somethings easily, just made me so annoyed. Showed me though, with a playthrough where Hypnosis was barely used except the Slowbro, which I'll more than agree with is needed. You did good, and your videos are always entertaining to watch or have in the background
