Served on a few of these, and Id have to say the quarterdeck was an awesome spot to relax especially in the Gulf. Shame it had to go to compliment the upgrades. Another big issue was crew space or lack there of. As soon as the ship had a full compliment including aviation embarked, it was tight and rec spaces were converted into sleeping quarters with make shift bunks

I never understood why RAN never gave them another 8 cell VLS next to the other one for a total off 16 cell VLS they could had change the main gun over to a lighter high velocity 76mm main gun and placed a sea ram system behind it. Placed the anti ship missile tubes in the middle off the ship. Gave it a missile combo off quad packed ESSM in 8 cells for 32 missile. The other 8 cell they could had 6 SM2 and 2 SM6. Change the harpoons over for the Norwegian long range 900km antinship missile or placed 2x 4 cell external mounted MK41 launch system in the middle off the ship for LSRAM missile. Would been a better armed ships and keep them for 2 decades longer after the Hunter class frigates arrived and used the Anzac frigate for a southern fleet and back up. What be your opinion on that? I understand everything eventually has to be replaced for capability but that's still 8 frigates they can use for back up and cover areas where our current fleet can't. Tasmania has nothing around it protecting it. Christmas Island could do with 2 off them around the island too. That island is a long way from Australia mainland. Tasmanian closer evan. Australia navy fleet needs to grow its too small for the areas we need to protect. For China growing fleet and 700+ warships and Australia can't produce warships at the rate they can. I believe it be a good idea to keep the Anzac class frigate longer and upgrade them. Make them more heavily armed. If they still seaworthy why we getting rid off them when they can still use them to enlarge our fleet. They make a good heavily armed patrol ship along with our OPV

Definitely a great summary of the ANZAC class frigate, l also believe the main naval gun is now been upgraded to the Mod 4 Mk 45 5/62 caliber gun from the existing 5/54 Mod 2. This ship in its upgrades is a fill the gaps until the Hunter class frigates are commissioned.

I sent a email to peter Dutton defence minister about keeping and dry docking our Anzac class frigates for emergency fleet once our hunter class takes over the role. I got a reply from Peter Dutton and rear admiral stating it has been put into consideration since the times we facing. If they decide to keep them. And I think they will. They will add upgrades to them and give them more cell VLS to keep them suitable for a emergency fleet. So I'm hoping I have won. For Australia for this backup. So far looking promising

I wished they keep them for another 2 decades replace the engine gave it the Aegis Combat System put 2x8 VLS behind the main gun where the harpoons are and gave them another 8 cell VLS at the back making it a 32 cell VLS and move the harpoons to the middle of the ship just to make them more heavily armed. keep them for costal frigets on top of of what we already building. It would bring numbers of navel strength if they did. The haul of these ships isn't that old, and hasn't weakened. With the danger Australia facing in the pacific and Indian Ocean. It might be ideal to keep these for awhile longer. It's not easy to replace a ship once you lose some. In battle. Not in our age of warfare it isn't

Great video yet again with a really good picture of the huge leaps the ANZAC class have made. Personally I think there's still a good case for a updated build of 8-10 for multi-role frigate duties (with TAS) - note that I dont call an 8000-10000t ship a frigate. They'd be relatively cheap compared to Hunter, and great for point defence or 3 together would make a nifty SAG. An 18 strong major vessel fleet would be great to see. I'd happily trade the silly OPV for this. I'd also suggest adding the AGM114 Hellfire to the armament for the ship courtesy of the MH60R Seahawk. It might be a smallish weapon but it has a 200nm range (with the helo) and rattling 6 of them down range will get some attention. Keep up the great vids :)

The radar and combat system are the heart of any ship and the Anzac class combat system and radar have come along way with a development time of well over thirty years. Once they get down to four radar panels per band they will be nearly world class. Unfortunately unless they use an interface so Aegis can be used in conjunction with the SAAB combat system and CEA radar the system will be limited in what can be fired from the VLS cells. They still need to work on the beamforming and beam steering and the backend of the system so the radar beams can be widened which would allow the use of four radar panels per band. Small incremental improvements but definitely improvements with the system much closer to where it needs to be. As an example the SAAB Sea Giraffe 4A Fixed Face naval radar of which four 4A radar panels are used on the SAAB mast which also has a rotating X band radar above the four radar panels is available and optimised for the SAAB combat system. The 4A has an instrumented range of 250KM and only needs the four S BAND GaN AESA radar panels to get the job done. So obviously when compared to the CEA radar and SAAB combat system the SAAB Sea Giraffe 4A Fixed Face radar and SAAB combat system are state of the art with superior performance to the current iteration of the CEA radar and combat system. 😎🇦🇺
