Someone brought up the very good point that by starting off a husbandry video with 5+ minutes of talking, I was going to turn a lot of people off who just wanted the info. If you want to skip my overly-long introduction, please start at 4:17. My apologies for this. I'll see if I can't edit out the extra stuff without reposting the entire video.

@@TomsBigSpiders thank you Tom, it has been just over 2 weeks now and they have both settled in really well. Even though they are both slings I gave them bigger tubs with more substrate and they have both been busy burrowing. My smallest one has now closed up the entrance with dirt so hopefully if its moulting it's safe and successful, I had made sure to mist their enclosures and keep 1 side of them moist and the other side drier. I have started showing some of my work mates your videos as I'm trying to get them interested in T's 😅

So, funny story: I got my first tarantula in February this year (G Pulchripes). Yesterday (June 11th), I went to an expo with the intention of buying a few more. So, I purchased a gbb sling and a juvenile A geniculata which are both awesome. My dealer is really good to bargain with, so I got my spiders for a cheaper price but he also gave me two freebie slings. One was a T albopilosum. The other is the dreaded H gigas. So I only have five tarantulas and one of them is an h gigas. It’s around a half inch. I got it home yesterday and offered it a cricket leg. It took it around twenty minutes later so I guess we’re off to a good start. I don’t know how well this will go but I’m going to tackle it with confidence
@TomsBigSpiders2 жыл бұрын
It kind of drives me nuts when dealers give folks who are obviously shopping for "beginner species" Old World spiders. The good news is, these guys are easy to manage if you give them room to dig. They grow quickly, so you could probably start on in a 32-oz deli cup, and once it hits 3" or so, put that deli cup directly into the adult enclosure. That would spare you having to interact much with the spider with unnecessary rehousings.

Hey Tom, I'm using the old video trick but no rush. I have a freshly molted H gigas juvie at about 2-2.5" that needs a rehouse. I'm looking for a good clear plastic/acrylic jar for it but having issues finding a good size and shaped container for it. I use a lot of 11" tall 6" wide cookie jars from the contain store for my arboreal and semi fossorial/terrestrial (Chilobrachys sp.) juvies but I'm feeling like that wont really give me enough sub with enough head room between the lid and sub. Do you have any suggestions? Can I give a wider floor space with less sub (something like 7" of sub to give more floor space to tunnel wider) or is the 10" of depth that I want to go better with less floor space? Thanks Tom, and like I said no rush. I have at least a month to get something together
@TomsBigSpiders5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Shawn! Man, people are actually doing this, and it's making it SO much easier! haha. I'm so behind on emails! Are you looking for something completely clear? The think is, that species grows very quickly, so it'll be pushing 5" or so before you know it. If you use the jar, you will likely be rehousing sooner than later. I haven't found much in the way of jars unfortunately. And, the larger bins are usually the milky plastic. Also, I'm assuming that you don't want to spend a lot?

@@TomsBigSpiders money is not a huge deal, I only have 30ish spiders at various stages. I would like clear (I enjoy seeing my hole ; ) ) and I have several of the mDesign x large clear boxes that I was looking towards. They are 9" tall so I was thinking 6.5-7" of dirt would work till the spider hits about 4" for its final adult enclosure. I'm trying to find a local glass company to get panels on the cheap and fabricate my own. I was hoping that shallower would work if it had more space to roam beneath the surface. I know it will technically work because I could stick it in a shoe box with an inch of dirt, water, and food and it will survive. I just want to make sure I'm meeting habitat needs as well as I can. Thanks for the response btw, I know your life is hectic. Love the channel and podcast
@TomsBigSpiders5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Shawn! Shallower will definitely work. 4-5" of substrate would be a great place to start. As your spider grows and expands his den, he will drag more dirt to the surface. Therefore, you just want to make sure that you leave some space up top for the dirt. I was actually going to suggest one of the taller m-Design ones, so...yes! I would definitely give one of those a shot. The tank that I was going to send you a link to is now out of stock, but if it comes back in, I"ll let you know. It's a 5.5 gallon one that is good for medium fossorials. It's glass and completely clear. And thanks!
@ssmith0845 жыл бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders rehouse is done, I actually ended up being suggested a zoomed bugarium zoomed.com/3-gallon-bugarium-insect-habitat-kit/ for it. I got 6ish inches of sub with a large piece of driftwood buried for structure and 2 small cork hides to fit comfortably. I know it doesn't have the best ventilation but the spider spends 99% of the time underground. I have a small fan in the room to help circulation. This seems like a good glass enclosure for juvie fossorials but I report back in a few months with my experience if you're interested. Thanks as always for your help, podcast, channel, and general support of the hobby

If you start with sac mates that aren't separated and put them in smaller enclosures so that they don't create their own territories, they can do pretty well.

I know this video is old but I'll give it a shot.. I would like to purchase this type but have never owned any spider. Because it has humidity requirements you advise against it being a beginner spider... I have experience with other animals, reptiles to be more specific, that require misting to meet humidity needs. I've also dealt with quick striking/aggressive animals.. does that give me a leg up? Or would this still be advised against?
@TomsBigSpiders5 жыл бұрын
Hello! I monitor all of my comments, so you're good! haha This one is usually considered one of the "advanced" species because of the moisture requirements and a potentially defensive temperament. With the moisture, you want the water to soak through, so the best way is to periodically water the substrate with something like a plant watering bucket. You want the water to soak down and keep the lower level moist (where it's burrow will be). Misting only keeps the top layer moist for a short time. If you've worked with fast and defensive animals before, you may do fine. I moved from snakes to spiders, and it helped me. Hope that helps!

From what I've gathered, they only work out if you start with sac mates that have never been separated and keep them together in a smaller area so they don't create their own burrows. Sunday i got home with two WC baboon species, a Hystocrates hercules young female and big chunky Pelinobius muticus adult female. I wish these baboon species could get some more attention on the world wide web, especially on the subject of how they all differ from each other. Cheers and keep up the good work!
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Nice grabs! I would love to do something on them, but there is a lot of talk about the fact that several of the species have been hybridized and that the some of the ones being sold as "hercules" are not. I need to get some more so I can cover this. I adore my two H. gigas, so I would love to have more of this genus.

One big tarantula youtuber Dark den always uploads big vids on Mondays and Fridays and smaller ones on Wednesday. So weekend uploads seems fine. others I follow has inconsistent upload schedules. Otherwise great vid
@TomsBigSpiders7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Eric! I would like to get to a schedule where I do one produced one and one "fun and raw" one once a week. I've had several people comment on the inconsistency, and it's something I always wanted to do. We'll have to see how that goes. hahaha Thanks again, bud!

gigas is communal ?
@TomsBigSpiders5 жыл бұрын
If you start with slings that have never been separated and keep them close together, they can be kept communally.

No I mean they were already 2 inches when I got them lol some freebie! And I thought at that size (and price "free") they would both be male but one looks female thus far so yay!

"It wont kill you but you're probably going to want to be dead for a little while" Tom Moran :D Love these comments because they're so true (I can only imagine, I've never been bitten and I try to be as careful as possible to not be!)

Usually, someone comes on when I make one of these videos and says something like, "Don't be a baby...a bite won't kill you." I always find human stupidity to be fascinating. haha Yeah, I have no intention of being bitten. lol Thanks, Richard!
@GeensGaming4 жыл бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders Haha yes its a bit like saying whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger however if you have your arms bitten off by a Tiger.. I don't necessarily agree that makes you stronger :D

Couple things... 1-How is the "Children and Tarantulas" video coming? I'm planning to send me and my son's footage this week. Just run into a few problems lol. 2-This may be dumb thing to ask, (I'm not an internet guru like I was as a teen lol) What is a pod cast exactly? I'm definitely gonna check it out regardless. I love your work!. 3-Take all the time you need. I myself had plans on doing weekly/biweekly vids but due to personal stuff, its been roughly a month. I hate it but yea. Great video as always though Tom! Ill be here for the next...
@TomsBigSpiders7 жыл бұрын
Hey, bud! Okay, here goes...haha 1) Well, I've only received one submission so far, but several folks are supposedly doing them. Can't wait to do this one. Can't wait to see what you get. 2) It's not dumb AT ALL! My brother had to explain to me what they were, because I had NO idea. hahaha They are basically like talk radio. Folks release them regularly like programs, and people can listen to them in their cars or on their phones and iPods. They got the name "podcast" because they were basically a radio broadcast on an iPod. Now, they are everywhere. As for mine, just imagine one of my voiceovers about a topic without video to go with it. 3) And THANKS! It won't be that long. I just want to make sure I can bank a few. You obviously appreciate how life can get in the way sometimes. Thanks again, bud!

Great video as always. Been away from watching KZbin due to my health issues. Downsized a bit here but I'm gonna try to catch up on my viewing. I got a juvenile female & a sling of this sp. from a friend of mine. Haven't seen the ♀ since. 🤣 Well, she'll emerge sooner or later at her own time. Also got P. lugardi, P. chordatus, P. muticus, C. meridionalis & B. verdezi ♀. Found out that i have a couple of females that i didn't know were ♀ with the help of a friend. She's awesome at sexing t's. Take care, Tom! ❤😊🕷

Hello, Glenn! First off, I do hope that you are feeling better. I'm very sorry to hear about your health issues. Wow, you've got some VERY cool species there! Congrats on the females...I still get a thrill when I find out something is a girl. Stay well, bud!

That is a beautiful T! Is it just me or are her hind legs really thick compared to the others? Project Tarantula has a video of his catching fish in the little ‘lake’ he makes in the enclosure. Really neat. If you haven’t seen it you should check it out!
@TomsBigSpiders7 жыл бұрын
Yes, they have those thick back legs for digging. There is a lot of discussion about how the leg thickness can help determine the species of Hysterocrates. And I HAVE seen that. It's amazing!!! :)

I know that you're not doing so, but might you ought to comment on the fact that people do keep these communally?
@TomsBigSpiders7 жыл бұрын
Hey, Dovey! I actually was going to mention that but left it out last minute. They are one that people have had some success with communally, but recently I've talked to three people that had theirs go south. It seems that there is a very narrow set of conditions to be met for it to work, and I didn't want it to turn into a long explanation. I should probably just do a feature on some of the species that are thought to be able to live communally. :)
@Dovietail7 жыл бұрын
Tom Moran yep, that would be awesome because there's a certain number of people (myself among them) who are absolutely fascinated by communal living and the additional opportunities for observing unique behavior that they offer. My favorite animals all move in tribes or packs or herds. The nice thing about this species is that they don't cost what a balfouri does, for instance, so you don't have to eat your heart out every time you count noses and come up short. ;->

Jeez, Tom, you're a school teacher! How do you have time to do anything other than fall into bed at night and feel guilty that you're not a better father and husband? Because pretty much, isn't that what teachers do? Maybe I'm just more introverted than you are, but a day of teaching and grading just wipes me out. I don't know how you are able to do all of your husbandry and share your experience with us as well. We appreciate it. Take a dang break!
@TomsBigSpiders7 жыл бұрын
Hahahahaha! But you forgot the drinking so you can unwind and fall asleep. That's normal, right? RIGHT?? Haha Seriously, I'm exhausted when I get home, so a lot of this stuff is shot during the weekend. Every once in a while, I'll catch something good at night, but I have to dub it over because I'm too much of a zombie to talk. lol For this video, I used my snow day to get it done. :) Thanks so much, bud...totally appreciated!

The beginning of this video could have just been a separate upload or channel update , 5 min in until u get to the husbandry notes is gunna get ppl to click off when the tittle doesn’t become relevant until almost halfway into the vid. Just some constructive criticism as a long time youtube watcher.

Tru Hafrican , with tom having 7k subs verses the millions of people watching youtube , who is more likely to click on the video out of curiosity? But regardless your point is valid, i would watch his vids even if it was just him talking as i do enjoy his content.
