While replacing the head gaskets on our Hyundai I stripped out the threads in the block. Upon investigation I found that this is a common problem with the 3.3/3.5l engines. I found a steel thread insert kit with some beefy inserts that should permanently solve the problem, In the end i wound up doing the whole block. Hopefully this video will give others with this issue an idea of what is involved before they take it on themselves. I'll link to the kit I bought below. I payed for this kit myself and I'm not sponsored in any way by the manufacturer, but the inserts are very robust and there is great support if you have questions.

Excellent Video! Thank you for going through the high effort to make this video for others. Very Helpful! I have a 2016 KIA Sedona with the 3.3 version of this engine and the Bank 1 Rear Head Gasket is leaking at cylinder 1-2 into the coolant system with only 75k miles. KIA wants $10k for a whole new engine. They don't want to even attempt a repair. They know about the Head bolts pulling on some of these engines, so their solution is a new long block. This video was a very good reference. Can't thank you enough.

doing the same job on a car that came into the shop. that plastic cap on the set screw comes off and can be tightened down with a 9/64 alan wrench. i ended up using one of those crummy "universal" sockets to drive the tap with a 3/8 ratchet because i couldn't find one of those adapters shown in the video. great video, thank you.

Awesome video, I'm about to do this on a a 2.4 with the same kit (model appropriate kit). From all the videos I've watched about it, this was very clear and concise with good camera angles. Thanks for educating us on the uses of the tapered and flat taps (3 flute and 4 flute), that helped clear up some questions for sure.

great video Steve! thats a great Helicoil walk through and good explanation of starter and bottom taps. You are a better man than me, I would have blown a blood vessel when i heard the pop of a stripped head bolt 🤣but then again the price of new/used cars justifies this job. super clear picture too, I'm rocking a Samsung S8+ but you look like your filming on a 4k camera with your phone, really clear and informative on the video. great job brother! I'm glad you showed me how to do this but I pray to God I never have to attempt it lol. hope you're doing well my friend!

Yeah that pop was a terrible feeling, especially when I was already in a time pinch to get it done, several late nights in the garage. I currently have an iPhone 12, the camera is pretty good in that one. Take care.

Great video. I’ve done this exact procedure on head bolt holes. It sure is frustrating lol I did it again earlier today. I yelled F$&K so loud after torquing one of the very last head bolts and it spun on me. You must have a very good wife lol Also I haven’t seen one of those craftsman ratchets working and intact in a decade!! I used to rip the gears out of them all the time lol I think they quit warrantying them and I ended up junking a pile of them. Good to see a survivor out there still lolol

Great video! Did you have enough room to drill the head bolts with the exhaust manifolds in place? I bought the same kit and about to get started on my 2015 Kia 3.3L, but I don't want to have to pull off more than necessary from the engine.

What would be the torque spec after you installed the inserts? Should you use the same manufacture's torque spec or it can be adjusted to the specific amount of torque and angles?
@SteveStoltz
@SteveStoltz Жыл бұрын
I used the manufacturers spec of amount of turns, but I would imagine it could be torqued somewhere in the 75-85 range like the earlier models specify.

@Steve Stoltz given the coolamt isn't as nicely coloured as I'd expect I'd say there's either shit still in the system - or misdiagnosed water pump (weakened ) god knows. I'm assuming they done a pressure check a littke while ago via compression as hg checked out OK

These engines seem to be known for head bolt block thread failure. I'll bet you didn't strip them at all. They were probably already gone and are what caused the gasket to leak in the first place.
@SteveStoltz
@SteveStoltz 2 жыл бұрын
I think your right. I remember when taking the heads off that most of the bolts were very tight and I needed a breaker bar to bust them loose, but the one that stripped and the one next to it took no effort at all to loosen. That also happened to be where the gasket was leaking.

@@SteveStoltz I'm putting the same inserts in my 3.3 Kia Sedona. When I was at the dealer picking up new head bolts and gasket kit, one of the techs was telling me that there was a problem with the block castings and that it's always that back corner that goes. He told be that inserts won't work and that I should look for a used engine. I don't really believe him, as the kit from Norm Huan seems to be very good. How did it work out for you in the long run?
@SteveStoltz
@SteveStoltz 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnstorz8566 So far so good with my inserts. The ones I used are very beefy, with deep threads. It’s seems very unlikely to me that they will pull out of the block. Something I noticed with the stock threads is that they go deep into the block but very little of the head bolt threads into them.
