This Subaru was left behind as a loss because the oil leak was SO BAD that it would cost more than the car is worth according to local shops. Here's a run down of the kit I'm using in the next video to fix it. It's the TIME-SERT M11x1.25 to replace the stripped out engine threads the head bolts go into.

This is gonna be fun to watch. Time serts seem more complex than helicoils, more bits, odd shaped driver. Since the patent for helicoil expired, the price of helicoils has dramatically fallen. What prompted you to choose the metric rather than the dramatically less expensive 7/16 Time sert?

My personality. And the likelihood I'll need this again in my course of doing Subaru head gaskets. I'm just OCD enough that doing things right for the sake of doing them right lights my fire. Even if it's not economical. It's like eating desert when you're already full because it's the kind you love.

@@briansmobile1 Timeserts seem to be less likely to work themselves out, as you deform them to fit the hole, so they likely will survive a few insert remove cycles as well. just remember the brake cleaner to make sure that hole is absolutely clean and oil free when putting the insert in, and wash the insert before applying the red loctite. you probably will also want to get the Timesert spark plug thread repair kit, it seals better than a helicoil. At least that should be cheaper, they sell a lot more of them.

Going to guess that Brian will be the "guy to go to" in the whole of Utah for Subaru head inserts then. Just will have to buy a whole bag of those inserts to put in the kit, because you will use them a lot, especially if you get some more iffy jobs your way. Time to order the Toyota add on parts, at least that will be less than $500, and you can just place them in the kit as well. Funny enough I have a few recoil sets, from M3 to M12, except for M10, and a few Imperial size ones as well. The metric sets were expensive, as they were new, but the Imperial and US size ones were dirt cheap, as some of the kits had manufacture dates back in the early 1970's, and had been sitting on a shelf all that time. I just tend to buy the tap and the inserts now, as the kit components will work for the next size up fine. Tip is to glue a small magnet in the box, so that all the inserts stick to it, so you do not lose them. I have a box of M3 and M4, then a boc with M6 and M8, then the final box is M12, with the inserts in the box with the tap and a nice new drill bit of the right size. Imperial is 1/4 UNC and 5/16 BSW, covers all the common US threads I needed to fix.

Helicoil was correct choice. Time Sert is last choice when the bore is so screwed up or a Helicoil has been ripped out. Or, on an aluminum racing block with high compression where the holes could ant hill, you get a larger area. My dad did that with Porsche air colled racing cases. I know, 2 years ago, long since complete.

Not surprised by the price. I’ve used them once or twice before. Not for head bolts but same thing really. My old dealer had like 9 different sized kits. Only special tool they provided us really. Good kits when you need them. Hopefully you don’t ever have to use them however.

Does Subaru recommend oil on the threads? That can wildly change the stress on the bolt if its not designed for it. I would think an antiseize would be preferred.
@briansmobile1
@briansmobile1 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Lightly oiling the head bolt threads is part of the installation procedure. When repairing head gaskets not oiling them can cause all kinds of sticking and messy inconsistencies due to varying states of corrosion/texture.
@piciu256
@piciu256 3 жыл бұрын
Most manufacturers rely on angles these days instead of torque spec for head bolts, so the oil is there to make sure you are able to turn them properly and remove them afterwards.

@@briansmobile1 Thanks, I knew they wanted something on them, just was surprised they specified oil, vs assembly lube or antiseize. Looking forward to the next video.

@drippingwax
@drippingwax 3 жыл бұрын
I followed torque specs while replacing my Subaru head gaskets, but that doesn't mean the last guy did. I needed to repair two bolt holes! Neither were as bad as repairing my Civic valve cover bolt holes. Apparently torque specs are hand-tight or less. I cleaned the oil, taped down a shop towel with a hole, put a piece of tape over the hole with a smaller hole, with the tape holding onto the metal around the bolt hole, and then spent hours fishing out metal shavings and flushing the oil.

Thanks for the feedback. My videos reach and retain and thus help more people with music in the back ground. It's more work for me to add it, but it seems to suit & serve more people when I do add it. I'm definitely open to requests for music types. I also try to keep it at the minimum volume possible & add captions to improve clarity.

Thanks for your courage & letting me know how you feel about the music Beni. It's more work for me to add the music. I have to listen to several different tunes, download them, sort them by type and select ones I think would be a good fit from my perspective. It's harder and takes more time, but I've found people watch longer if it's there. I painstakingly work on volume levels to have the music be less than 20% of the volume of the audio for clarity. I can't please everyone, but what I can do is read your comments and look at the analytics and find what works best to reach/help as many people as I can. I would LOVE suggestions from the KZbin audio library if you have any. That would help a lot!
