Pat Rogers thanks Pat, our garage quoted £600 to replace clutch and we would still have a stiff clutch as nobody suggested it could be the cable

Should the inner cable move freely inside the shielding a bit like a bike brake or gear lever cable? I was wondering if it is possible to check for any resistance before trying to replace? I took the car to my local franchise dealer and they wanted to stip out the gearbox etc at £400. The clutch isn't slipping between any gears but the pedal has become increasingly hard to press. Thanks

I'll start with the cable seeing as how the gears arent slipping or grinding. Thanks.

From my experience the pedal box can crack an bend due to heavy clutch causing the pedal box to bend giving a very low pedal an hard to engage gears

Zaf N Thanks, just trying to help. Our garage tried to charge for a full clutch replacement at £800, this is when I thought I would take a look myself.

Hi! I had changed the cable but it is still stiff. Do you know if the cable must be lubricated? Or i have to adjust the pedal register?
@Paul-hb9lx
@Paul-hb9lx 6 жыл бұрын
Pablo Secolo hi, if you have changed the cable then might be worth taking to a garage for second opinion. I could.instantly tell my cable was faulty as the old inner cable did not slide through the outer casing. No they do not need lubricating as they are already greased. Hope this helps

Hi, I got the cable changed in my i10, but it's still hard and has significant clutch play. The mechanic didn't seem interested in changing the cable and was insisting on changing the clutch. Is it possible that he hasn't adjusted the cable properly? My car has done 27,000 KMs and there's no clutch slippage or loss of power between RPMs and drivetrain.

Samuel Wilson The only adjustment is at the gearbox end, which is a nut that is tightened. If the biting point on the clutch is correct then it's probably something else.

Paul Biting point is too low. About an inch above the floor.

Samuel Wilson definitely needs the nut tightening at the end where the geardox is. You can see it from underneath

Paul I took it to some other mechanic and he tightened it. It was very loose, and now it's absolutely okay now. The first mechanic intentionally left it loose to rip me off.

Samuel Wilson That's great!! Best stay away from the first garage in future. I guess it's always best to get a second opinion....

Jesus Paul thats not easy. How long are you driving that car before the clutch wore out
@Paul-hb9lx

Geraldine Geraldine The clutch has not worn out, it was only the cable that needed replacing

Paul Clutch cables shouldn't wear out. Are you by any change riding the clutch in traffic.? Leaving the car in gear while at traffic lights. Every one does it. Well whats the verdict are these cars shit. I was thinking about buying one. I know that some of the Toyotas have hydraulic clutchs. Looks like this one is a very old style dry plate friction clutch.

@@taichihead42 i10 is a cracking car with the chain driven cam kappa engine, most manual transmission cars use the same type of clutch being a dry single plate clutch with diaphragm spring pressure plate and a release bearing, what you are saying about toyotas being hydraulic is purely the method of pushing the release bearing against the diaphragm spring hydraulically using a master and slave cylinder to do the job rather than a mechanical operated cable, there is also a concentric slave cylinder type where the slave cylinder and release bearing are combined into one unit that fits inside the gearbox bell housing rather than having an external hydraulic slave cylinder to operate the lever on older type hydraulic operated clutches. This i10 is a first gen model, the 2nd gen i10 they got rid of the cable operated clutch and went to hydraulic operated. I personally prefer having a car with a cable operated clutch compared to hydraulic operated because you can get a better idea of how worn the clutch friction plate is by how much adjustment is left on the threads of the cable, no chance of fluid leaks with a cable, or air getting in the system when cable operated etc. Never had a clutch cable snap on me yet or go stiff like the fella posting this video.

The clutch pedal box on these is made from a flimsy bit of steel and is not secured all that well, It is recommended removing the box and checking it (it is held in place by the 2 studs that holds the cable in place), the top bolt doesnt actually screw into anything (just a sky hook), the 2 bolts holding the cable in place is all you need to undo to remove the pedal - Check the box is not suffering from metal fatigue around the studs, the design of this is poor, I modified my one using 2mm steel plate (1.3mm was used to make these) as the £240 cost of another substandard piece of bent up steel wasn't appealing! if metal fatigue is evident then you will need to replace the box or do what I did and make up a new plate to wrap around the original, I used 2 bolts each side to hold it to the old pedal box.

I had to take my box out and get the welds redone. The heat from the engine dries out the lube on the inner cable then that puts extra strain on the box to depress the clutch. I think the box is ok as long as the cable is freely moving
