This week we have a Hyundai i10 with a heavy clutch pedal where we diagnosed the problem being the clutch cable rusted out and stretched needing replacing.
Hey everybody, Igor here from Cars Exposed thanks for tuning in.
I will be uploading videos here every week Thursday at 18:30 sharing my experiences working around cars on my driveway, exposing issues, auto repair, auto electric, oil changes, services, projects and more...
Cheers 👍

Thank you so much for making this video. I was dreading the repair cost when my clutch cable snapped, but after watching your video, I was able to fit a replacement myself with no prior experience working on cars. Keep it up! For any novices like me, remember to turn the screw just under the battery clockwise to tighten everything up once fitted. This will slowly bring the biting point upwards! It’s also much easier to do this with the wire fixing by the battery disconnected and the cable pulled upwards by an assistant. After a few miles, a small retightening was needed but it’s been fine after that!

Watched this video after my i10 developed cable issues and found it really helpful. Following Igor's excellent tips I was able to change the cable myself with just a fairly basic toolkit. When I took the old cable off it had exactly the same problem as the one in the video - the collar behind the pedal linkage had broken off completely. Feels like a new car again! Thanks Igor :)

Thanks for this video, it explained how to change the cable perfectly and fixed the problem on my Mum's i10. I bought a pattern part cable from eBay for £25 which fitted and worked no problem. The only thing I would have added is more information on how to adjust the cable because this turned out to be key to getting it all working correctly. As indicated in the comments you need to turn the 3 pronged wheel on the cable at the gearbox end underneath the battery tray. If your cable (and therefore pedal) is loose you need to turn this wheel CLOCKWISE. I found it was easier to disconnect the cable from gearbox and do the bulk of the turning until it was tight enough that you could still reattach it to the gearbox arm. After that you still need to adjust the cable wheel in situ to get the perfect position, but because of the fresh rubber grommet it won't turn easily with your finger tips so I sprayed a little GT85 (or WD40 would probably be fine) so that it turned easily; keep turning and checking the pedal travel/feel until you're happy, personally I kept turning until the wheel went a little tight as I found the pedal then had an excellent feel with the bite point about half way up the travel and no need to push it down anywhere near the floor. There was no clutch slip. I took the i10 for a test drive and after a few miles found the cable had stretched a little bit, so I tightened a little bit more and left it at that. Hope this helps someone in the future.

Got the same item off ebay for £75 and just fitted it. It seems to have fixed my issue. My last cable was really stiff and causing my gear changing to crank. Now its smooth and pressed down easily. Thank you for these instructions! Word of warning for newbies.. Putting the pedal back on was a real head ache, as you have very little room (for my long arms) to latch the cable hook in and keep it hooked while you try to slip the pedal bolt back in.. but I got there in the end. important thing is this fixed the issue of my very stiff clutch pedal and occasional cranking gear changes.

Good video. I have a 2010 i10. Bought a cable from main dealer €43. I tried to change cable but the part secured to body at clutch end has different rubbers. I couldn't get it off. Had to abandon and refit original cable. Refitting bolt for pedal is tricky too.

Hi, i have a Kia Picanto and having a issue with a stiff clutch pedal.. its light to half way then feels like its getting stuck then goes all the way down. What i want to ask is did you check the old cable and was the inner cable moving freely or was it getting stuck. Because i took of one side (engine side) and it was moving nice a freely). Could it still be my cable?

The earlier i10s have a different cable that does not have the ferrule. That part number 415100X911 is correct for later i10s My 14 plate had a different cable that was under £30. However that cable also fits but is far more expensive. After fitting you should also check the correct amount of free play and pedal height and travel. The adjustments are on the pedal carrier and also on the cable as it goes into gearbox/clutch housing.

How much would you expect to pay at a garage to have this done? I've just been quoted £237.48. I took it in last September as the clutch pedal was very stiff and sometimes difficult to get into reverse. They charged me for a new clutch. Last week there was a bang and the pedal went all floppy and of course, it's the clutch cable. I'm so mad I could spit. I'm sure they're pulling a fast one. I'd be grateful for any comments x

Coralie Webster A new cable from Hyundai costs about £120 and I would say it’s probably an hour labour job, most garages will charge £50 for labour plus VAT so £60 + £120 = £180 so it seems a little bit off ...
@coraliewebster8333
@coraliewebster8333 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'll bear that in mind. I've just spoken to them about the cost of the cable. They told me £97 and it would take two hours to fit. I've informed them it should be around one hour as several other places have said the same. I'm ready for a fight if necessary!
@CarsExposed
@CarsExposed 4 жыл бұрын
Coralie Webster £97 for the part is probably before VAT, I can’t never blame garages for charging more because their overheads and comebacks and to be fare they follow the service book and if it says 2 hours labor even if takes less time they will charge you for the 2 hours but it took me an hour to change this cable filming it as well dead easy ... good luck 👍
