Hyundai i30 Fastback N (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Hyundai i30 Fastback N is a 5-door liftback on steroids. There are large air intakes in the front bumper. A spoiler with a red stripe. 19 inch rims expose red brake calipers. In the back, the integrated spoiler has been additionally extended with a plastic element. There’s also double exhaust, a diffusor, and a triangle fog light. Hyundai i30 Fastback N has a bunch of features, which will make you look like a hero, like launch control, auto rev matching, or electronic diff. And a lot of settings, which let you to adapt the i30 Fastback N to your needs and skills. And you better have some skill, because this car has 275 hp, and almost 380 Nm of torque with overboost. Even if for a hot hatch this car is very easy to handle.

The ‘N’ in Hyundai N stands for Namyang, home to Hyundai Motor’s global R&D Centre in Korea since 1995, where the idea was born, and for the Nürburgring, home to Hyundai Motor’s European Test Centre, where the i30 N was further developed and tested. The close connection between Namyang and the Nürburgring created the foundation for N, aiming to build on the company’s motorsport experience to bring thrilling winding road fun to customers who love cars. The ‘N’ logo itself embodies this idea, as it symbolises a chicane.

I have been an owner of an i30 N hatchback for well over a year now. I like the red stitching in this one a bit more over the blue in the hatch. The exterior is somewhat of a mixed bag. From certain angles it looks way better than the hatchback, from other angles it just looks weird.

I thought the N comes from Namyang track where Hyundai and Kia tests their sports models.

I think Hyundai is simplifying things with this N=chicane business. Nobody knows what/where Namyang is. "N was born in Namyang and honed at the Nürburgring. Namyang is not a track. It's where the Hyundai R&D center is located. They test their N cars on the Nurburgring.
