Hyundai i30N Performance Review The Best Family Hot hatch Track Car on the market

The i30 N is the first product of Hyundai’s N division, which is set to roll out a variety of sporting models over the coming years. The ‘N’ stands for both Nurburgring and Namyang, Hyundai’s global R&D centre in South Korea. If you’re in the market for a hot hatch, the Hyundai i30 N is one you really should consider alongside the likes of the Honda Civic Type R, Toyota GR Yaris and the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Far from taking a standard i30 and chucking a bigger engine in it, Hyundai's development team have spent a long time overhauling the chassis to ensure it can handle the power on offer. Having built up its financial and manufacturing might over the years, Hyundai have been able to lure in top talent from various European carmakers, including former engineering boss for BMW’s M division, Albert Biermann. With a design headquarters in Europe and an engineering base at the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany, Hyundai is taking it’s new ‘N’ performance brand very seriously.
The i30 N gets an aggressive body kit, adaptive sports suspension that makes it 8mm lower than the standard car, lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels, a stunning set of red callipers front and rear and a massive twin-exit exhaust system that creates a sound to behold. Inside you will find a 10.0-inch infotainment screen taking centre stage on the dashboard, complete with ‘N Mode’, with a lap timer, acceleration timer, G meter and also settings to configure your own driving mode.
The Hyundai i30 N gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 280bhp, sent to the front wheels through a six-speed short throw manual gearbox as standard. You can also pay a bit extra for an eight-speed automatic.
The Hyundai i30 N starts from £34,095 to £36,070 depending if you opt for the manual or the auto gearbox. Personally, I wouldnt even consider going for the auto in this car, the manual is simply sublime.

Just picked up my DCT this week. Love it! I wanted to run it in a bit so just drove home 6hrs in Eco and acheived 39mpg sat at 70. Brilliant car, sound amazing!!

Great review. You cover a lot of aspects of the car that most other reviewers neglect. For example, I wanted to know how the car goes in eco mode. And I didn’t know that the car had a stop-start fuel saver mode.

I had the i20N as one of the first purchasers in dk for about nine month and I loved the car. Unfortunately I had to swap it to a car with an automatic gearbox because of a bad left knee. Now I´m considring buying an i30N with the DCT gearbox to pop up my daily driving.Thanks for a good review. Preciate it. Best regards from Denmark

Great in depth review AJ. I have had a white manual i30N which I bought new here in Australia in March. There are some trim differences in that all i30Ns here are one trim spec but with the same 280hp engine. The ONLY gripe I have is that the mirrors switches on the driver's door are not lit at night. Apart from that, its brilliant and the juvenile pops and bangs only make it more fun!
