Any chance to redo this test when NOT in I-Pedal mode. As you might know by know, I-Pedal trumps ECO and will always use both motors which explains why your range was so low in this test. I suspect it will be closer to 270-300 miles when not in I-Pedal. Thanks for reading

My wife's new limited is very comfortable for a long trip. I prefer it to my model Y. The slowest Model Y will mop the floor with the fastest Ioniq 5 however the Ioniq 5 is far more compliant and overall easier to manage and it never slammed on the brakes for no reason at all. Hyundai is getting a lot of things right with this car.
@Rhynri
@Rhynri 9 ай бұрын
The slowest Model Y is ~5.0s, the LR is ~4.8s, and the Limited I5 is ~4.5s. Only the Perf Y is faster than the Limited 0-60. In the quarter mile things change and the Y is faster, since the I5 motors are torque-forward. It doesn't feel as fast thanks to that torque emphasis vs HP, but it is quite quick.

Unless i missed something the test was run in iPedal-mode - that's known to decrease range on AWD models as the front engine will be in use to better control/increase stopping power on regen. Using the other regen-levels than iPedal will only use the rear engine when in ECO mode (except when using a real heavy foot on the accelerator).

In the NoCo FoCo area and appreciating these videos. VW eGolf and Pacifica PHEV in our garage already, alongside a track-only S2000. Thinking about the Ioniq/EV6 to help meet daily range needs during NoCo winters. The eGolf is a great little car and fantastic in the snow with Michelin snow tires, but when the temps go below zero, the lack of battery thermal management means it can't manage the ~100 daily miles we need, even with charging between trips. On the plus side, it will do 4.0-5.0 mi/kwh at 70 MPH.

Thank you, love your test. It seem that when you use epedal, the front engine is always engaged. I would really like if you can do the same loop test with the AWD car in ECO and auto regen, compare to an RWD in ECO mode too. I place a reservation for a RWD LR IONIQ, but i may change for a AWD if the range in ECO is closer to the AWD.

At 11:42 you mention that you were using I-pedal. I’ve seen on another video that the usage of I-pedal limits the front motor from disengaging and can decrease efficiency. It was something to do with using both motors for stronger regeneration and it keeps a clutch engaged on the front motor. I wish I could remember which video I saw it on but I can’t remember. I’ve watched so many… if this is true, I would suspect the additional drag from the front motor would likely decrease range significantly.

I was fixed on the RWD version for the sake of a bit more range. But you’ve made a good case for me to get the AWD version instead. Most of my driving is city. Lots of snow and it can get a lot more colder here. IMO, if it’s around 200 miles highway, that will be more than enough for me should I have to be on the highway. As of now here in Canada 🇨🇦 there’s level 3 chargers every approx 200 kilometres to go across the country, and theirs definitely room for improvement on our charging infrastructure to say the least. Thanks for showing the range on this. PS. We got to wait until the spring until we can make a order on a ioniq 5. Your latest vid of your dad trading in the ID4 for a ioniq has me super jealous lol.

Great to see this - thanks! Well done. I would love to see a comparison with the RWD that supposedly gets 300+ miles. I'm debating between getting the AWD or RWD for a daily commuter that includes 60% dense city driving. The torque and HP of the AWD is difficult to turn away but range is most important. I really don't need AWD in NYC, except that one or two days out of the year.

AWD SEL Ioniq 5 and we often show 270 miles range- drive in Eco mode and the front motor can be disconnected to optimize range. So while the RWD claims 303 mile range the AWD is so much fun in AWD for those times you want to start rapidly. I don't think the RWD would be all that much better in a real world range test.

Since the RWD doesn't have the heat pump, it would be an interesting to do this test with an SEL RWD to see how far it goes having only RWD, less weight, but an inefficient heating system compared to the heat pump. The current RWD in the US don't have the battery warming system so you could test the charging speeds if the AWD has Winter mode On, not to be confused with Snow mode.

Larger wheels are killing the range, same thing happens with the Model 3 - if you reduce the rim to an 18", I heard someone on the forums managed to get a 17" rim on the car, but I dunno about that as it has to fit over the brake caliper.... That being said if you get an 18" rim on the car, your range should go up quite a bit.... Winter tires don't help either....

How long did it take to charge after the 227 miles. After three hours driving i think a 20-40 minute break is fine. I think a long drive ICE gas stop would take maybe 15-20 minutes between gassing up, getting drinks or snacks and using the W.C. now if you stop to eat something at a sit down, then an hour could easily go by
@updlate4756
@updlate4756 2 жыл бұрын
227 miles (EPA rated at 256). For it being between 50F at the start and dropping to 37F, plus having a second passenger for about 200 lbs of extra weight, the range loss isn't bad at all at highway speeds. That's 11% less range than EPA in winter highway driving. BEVs can drop by as much as 40% in highway winter driving. (Although you did DCFC before the trip which would help) It could beat EPA in summer driving pretty easily. You've been doing a lot of tests in Colorado / Wyoming... do you know how elevation impacts air density? At 3000 ft, I believe it can reduce air density by about 7-8% versus sea level which would make a noticeable difference at higher speeds and may help mitigate the colder temps. 21:15 "OH NO MY PACKAGES!" - Sheriff Eli 24:45 If it's off by 1 percent, then it's probably a different rounding algorithm or a slower refresh in the infotainment. The driver's cluster is likely more accurate / more pessimistic.

What would you guess the range would be with passenger and fully loaded cargo in back (lets say like 150 pounds) Doing a cross country road trip and current ICE car is loaded -- thinking of feasibility to continue road trips in an EV like this
@updlate4756
@updlate4756 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlendlogicTech I've seen estimates online of range loss of about 1% per every 100 lbs. I imagine that's combined driving, not sure how much of an impact will strictly occur on the highway. So with 4 people at an average 150 lbs, and 150 lbs of cargo, you're looking at 750 lbs, and potentially up to a 7.5% efficiency loss. In Kyle's test, having a second person in the car weighing say ~200 lbs would only drop the total range of the test by about 4-5 miles.

Just wondering about the round trip range test. The argument is that what you lose on a leg with headwind you gain back on a leg with tailwind. I was wondering about the validity of that. It would be correct if drag were proportional to velocity. But what if drag goes up with velocity squared? Higher speeds will have a non-proportional effect. Example: In windless conditions, you have (just squaring the speed and assuming two 10 mile legs) a wind resistance of 112.5 K draggies (a measure I just made up because I don't know any different). A 20mph headwind on one leg of 10 miles and a tailwind on the return trip gives a total of 120.5 K draggies. Maybe not a huge difference. But it still suggests that a still wind test would be just a little more favorable to the car's range.

One reason the range is so much less is because the EPA range is tested I believe at 55 mph. The difference between 55 mph and 70 mph in terms of energy consumption is enormous because the amount of resistance one has to overcome is the cube of the speed so compare 55 to the third power with 70 to the third power and you'll get an enormous increase in fuel consumption. Also I'm not sure how much running the accessories consumes but I can say this my 2019 Chevy bolt is rated at 258 miles of range. Before I knew about the battery problem and I was running it down close to zero, I could often get over $360 mi out of it just by driving locally and carefully. The difference between driving 30 mph and 60 mph is actually eight times not twice, again because of that cube factor. So if you're running low on battery drive the car at about 15 or 20 miles an hour where the wind resistance is so low that it's almost insignificant and your range will be incredible. If you can tolerate doing that for an entire tank full you'll probably get three times the rated range on the vehicle. You'll certainly get at least twice.

Why don't you use winter mode? Rather, the range is shorter and the charging speed is slightly affected. What drive mode was the car tested in, Kyle? I know you started by stating you were in ECO mode. Did you stay in ECO mode? If so, wouldn't that be the (virtually) the same as the RWD version? Since ECO mode only engages the rear motor the only difference between RWD & AWD is the additional weight of the front (but disengaged) motor? Or am I completely offbase here?
@vesuvius007
@vesuvius007 2 жыл бұрын
That's what most seem to think. But then the question is why the rated range is so different. Is it over optimistic for rwd, or are we missing something with the how the versions compare in eco mode? Can't wait for the rwd tests to find out.

@@djscandela but as Kyle noted, normal mode usually doesn't use the front motor unless you are gunning it. So it still seems like an oddly large difference. I've also not seen a convincing detailed explanation with a source of how the EPA rating works. It's a lot of conflicting info and hand waving. One of these KZbinrs may be correct but I'd rather just wait for the test than try and decipher which one.

one thing to note here if he'll be doing this... tesla purposefully hides a good chunk of miles for emergency scenarios. so when the car indicates a 0 state of charge that means it still has a lot of miles left in it and you should have to drive around until its dead to know what the true range is. and as expected it actually matches the EPA range exactly. Most people say they don't hit that mark or something but nah, Edmunds did their test and had to walk back their previous results where they drove it only until it hit 0.

I really like the clean look of the interior on the Hyundai and prefer the exterior style to the EV6. I see several a week where i live in the UK so i think they are selling well. Its a pity that hyundai couldn't get the same efficiency out of this car as they have with the older Ioniq and the Kona which are real leaders even now. 224 is not bad for a big car in that temperature, I suspect in summer you'd be up to 250 easy. But then consider you are missing the SC network and a Model Y looks much more attractive to me at what i think is a similar price? (and also likely better resale on a Tesla?). Looking forward to the summer test!
