Kyle is in San Diego with Hyundai’s newest electric car! In this video he takes you for a first drive of the IONIQ 5, this one being an AWD Limited fully specced model. He first takes you on a tour of the vehicle and then jumps in the car and drives it on the highway, in the city, and in the mountains.

Who’s pumped for this car? So many tests we have to do once we can get our hands on it for an extended period of time. It’ll be sold in ZEV states and about 8 others at launch but then expanding to sales in all 50 states once supply can catch up with demand. I think the supply with be this car’s biggest issue! Good luck getting one as I’m sure everyone will be lined up for these.

Don't worry, the dealerships will ruin it for the customers. Just as we've seen happening with Ford and it's rip off dealerships. Dealerships have a vested interest in stopping the EV juggernaut. What most people don't realize is that New car dealerships make most of the profits from their service departments. New car sales alone won't keep the lights on at most dealerships. The sales of parts and service easily provide over 50% of a dealerships profits and 99.99% of those parts and services are for gasoline and diesel (ICE) vehicles ONLY. As such dealerships want nothing to do with electric vehicles which require virtually zero routine maintenance and rarely need repairs or parts. Dealerships simply cannot make enough money selling you an electric vehicle. Also, EV customers won't be purchasing those expensive extended service plans that dealerships find so lucrative. But because battery costs are still high the profit margins on EV's aren't big enough to allow dealerships to tack on significant markups. Manufacturers desperately need to be allowed to avoid dealerships and sell EV's directly to customers the way Tesla does it.

@@Tron-Jockey I agree. The dealership model just won’t work as currently configured for selling EV. The OEMs will need to find another channel to sell them to avoid the ridiculous mark-ups and other sabotage happening at stealerships.

I’m in UK and I’ve owned a top-spec LR AWD IONIQ 5 for 3 months now, and I completely concur with Kyle’s initial comments regarding how enjoyable this car is to drive. I also use 1 pedal driving all the time, and it will stop and hold on even a fairly steep slope. Overall, this is a fabulous car to drive, and extremely comfortable. The ability to remotely set pre-heating is also very useful, as it works anywhere, even when not connected to external power, using the Bluelink app. Superb visibility, including 360 deg cameras when reversing, make it very easy to position accurately on the road, despite its size. As you might have gathered, I really love this car. With respect to V2L, in UK the output is 3.6kW, and I have demonstrated I can run my house from this car for everything except the main cooker. Awesome.

I already had a standby generator connected to a changeover switch. I had a new socket installed next to the carport that allows me to connect the car to that switch. The switch then directly connects to the main fuse box (while isolating the house from the grid supply) and so can power any circuits in the house.

@@JakeCarlson95 There are several videos out in Europe of people doing this, but I don't know if any are in english. 3.6kW won't be available in the US, because at the odd 120V US (and perhaps some other American countries?) grid Voltage it can only deliver half of what it can everywhere else. The reason is that the output is limited to 16A, which (roughly) results in 3.6kW @ 230V and 1.9kW @ 120V nominal voltage. 16A makes perfect technical sense everywhere in the world outside North America, and because North America currently is a rather insignificant EV market compared to Europe or China it's not worth the while for manufacturers to come up with a dedicated solution.

Haha. I’m replacing my aging parents BMW X5 w the Ioniq. The x5 is amazing w air suspension, ultra quiet cabin, etc. but the idrive is too complicated for my dad and the wireless CarPlay works inconsistently and drives my dad crazy. I’m hoping the simpler Ioniq interface will be a better car for them. Besides, my mom wants a smaller car - the x5 is too big for her. Im hoping they’ll like it as my mom was disappointed when I told her I’m replacing her bmw w a “Hyundai”.

My brother just purchased this Hyundai IONIQ 5 2022 this past week. He's ecstatic about it, he has noticed several people taking pictures of it while he's driving or even at a stop light . He says it drives smooth and when calls are received the person on the call their face will pop up on the screen ( He told our older sister not to call him lol ) I love the look inside and out the headlights are awesome , the screen along the dashboard is awesome the wheels are stoke 9eco tire) the interior looks elegant the sunroof is nice, the BOSE system is sick , ya need to check it out go for a spine , Im glad he got one so I can ride in it when visiting (California) , he has the TOP OF THE LINE and I'm so happy for him he deserves it .. This is a seriously important EV - bringing 800V architecture to the masses and the crazy fast charging that comes with it. Range is much less of a factor when charging is so fast. I’m pumped to see these on the road, mostly because they look so great.

Now let's not jump the gun here. This is out and out homerisim at it's worst. In no way shape or form does this car even come close to the capabilities of an ICE. Pardon the pun, but not by a mile not by a 100 miles. Math is your friend. As an example, you can go out and purchase a fully loaded RWD limited ICE kona that gets 35mpg. I could hop in that car and scream down highway 5 here in northern california at speeds of 75-80 mph and drive right about 435 miles. Pull up to any of a million gas stations, tap my credit card, fill up and even top off some for that little extra, clean the windshield, use the restroom grab a bite/drink and be back on the road in 20 minutes good to go for 400+ more. This car with only charge to 80%. Which in turn means even IF (and that was a BIG if) it is rated to go 300 miles with an 80% charge you are now down to 260 miles. And that is NOT 260 miles at 75-80 miles an hour. More likely it will go, let's say, 235 miles. So the kona ICE can realistically go 200 miles further that this car and you don't have to concern yourself with charging speeds. And that's a kona which is admittedly not the best gas saver you can get. If you are driving a hyundai elantra now you are talking 43mpg and an extra 100 miles for a total of 535 miles or 300 miles further then that of the ioniq 5. Math is your friend. And before you start typing furiously this is coming from a guy who is seriously considering purchasing a kona electric! lol. But I would be remiss to not point out the serious flaws in the rationale about how this car is on and even plane with an ICE. Not even close.

If you want to get rid of the delay from a stand still, keep it out of I-pedal and Auto Hold. Then it launches way harder! I’ve got an RWD here in Sweden (delivery times on AWD are ridiculous here). Not as powerful of course , but not as anemic as you’d might think. And surprisingly tail happy! You don’t see that very often anymore. Fun!

Former Toyota guy here. I say "former" because I will probably never own another Toyota again. I'm VERY disappointing in their lack of interest in EV's. Serisouly they're lobbying (bribe) congress to slow down the advancement of EV'S. I just don't see Toyota being a leader in the automotive market in the next 10 years. Yep. Toyota and Honda both wasted precious time (and hundreds of millions of dollars) chasing the hydrogen fuel cell ghost and are now trying to play catchup. Time will tell if they are successful in that.

Toyota is tops because it always has at least four cars in the top rated 10 cars in consumer reports. That's because of the quality of work and their resale value. Everyone knows a Toyota will go 200,000 miles and that's why it's resale value so high. Hyundai can't match Toyotas resale value or Honda for that matter! Don't call Toyota out of business quite yet.

Just took a test ride of Ionic 5 SE AWD in NJ. I have to say, the ride is pretty sweet and the torque is great. The car looks small from outside but is very spacious on inside. HOWEVER... one bummer is going to be the dealer. They told me all vehicles will be priced MSRP+$5,000. Non negotiable. Which means the bottom line price of car is more than an ICE after any Federal and/or NJ State incentives (if any) .....no point in going EV then other than to cut on emissions.

Man, you are SO descriptive with how you put your feelings and the performance of the car; light uears beyond ANY other reviewers - professional 9r otherwise. I have already test driven a HI5 and i still learned things about thr performance and feel! I would say my car is "on order" but it's actually already parked and on site at fhe dealer, just awaiting adaptations before i can pick my baby up. Limited AWD all in lease for 7149.00 no payments for 24 months, 24k miles, 17k State/federal and Hyundai rebates at time of signing. 2 years free Electrify america, I live 4 miles away from two 350kw and two 150kw they are always open! Just bought a OEM v2l adapter for only 85.00 on ebay. got all windows tinted, including windshield 95% heat rejection . The HUD is a game changer for me and HDA works awesome two things you should mention , comes with the EV tires with the foam , very expensive. Also the rear windows are dyed glass with no heat rejection

Electric cars drive better, require less maintenance, cheaper to operate overall, accelerate better than average ice car, smoother, plus more. I'm a gearhead but for a daily driver Ice has no chance. 98 percent of ev owners say they won't go back to Ice. The number issue is going to be people in apartments but charging will be fast enough and plentiful enough that you can stop like you do for gas or charge in the apt parking lot

From the way you describe the handling, this car has handling characteristics of mx-5 Miata. Miata has considerable body roll but you are always in control of the car and steering feel and feedback is very accurate of what the car is doing. It's not the numbers but how the car feels.

The large AWD range penalty is partially due to the fact that they tested the AWD with 20 inch wheels and the RWD with the 19s. They always use the worst case options for each trim tested and the 20s are not available on the RWD as a standard option.

I wish the EV press would get this through their heads. The wheel diameter has NOTHING to do with an EV's efficiency!!!! What is important is the WIDTH of the tire. Theoretically, the "best tire" for range would by something akin to an aerodynamic version of a bicycle wheel, tall, light and THIN! Unfortunately, that type of design is also harsh, and compromised in all safety parameters!

Tommy from TFL cars and Kyle seem to be the most gushing of the reviewers so far. But pretty much other every review i've seen (Redline, AlexOnAutos, KBB, Motormouth, CarConfections) has been extremely positive. Just like Kyle said, the biggest problem of the Ioniq 5 is the atrociously limited supply (only around 60k units a year worldwide compared to over 500k for the Model Y)...

I was actually considering the Audi e-Tron GT, but with top spec, this is almost half the price. @kyle how’d you rate it against the GT? I'm a physically disabled driver, and this was on my short list until I found out my 4-wheel "walker" wouldn't fit in the boot (trunk in the USA). The only all-electric vehicles available in the UK that would take the walker were the MG5 and the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. Unsurprisingly, I chose the Taycan CT in 4S (plus) configuration, but if I didn't need the additional boot length I would have bought the Ioniq5. At least with the Ioniq5 I wouldn't have to adjust the chassis height to get in & out and it would have cost a lot less!

When I see this EV from Hyundai, I always think “Future Wave” music 🎶 should be played every time it’s driven. Kavinsky’s “Night Call” would be a good song to play while driving it. It’s a throw back to old LEDs from the 1980s era stereo boom box radios and home stereo receivers which were really Japanese inspired. Very cool retro futuristic car. I like it and hit hits all of the things the average consumer would want in an EV.

Sad that most companies are pinching pennies supplying L1 EVSE. Bolt EUV comes with dual voltage EVSE, and had the adapters for 110/220. Seems like an easy and nearly zero-cost way to help buyers enjoy their EV experience.

The exterior color of Kyle’s tester in this video is Shooting Star Gray Matte (T5R) and the interior is called Dark or Teal Green with Dove Gray two tone (VKR). The interior naming convention of “Dark Green” is a bit odd to me knowing that the seats are actually Dove Gray with Red Piping. Anyone have a bad experience with maintaining this exact matte color paint from another Hyundai model over the years that would steer me away from getting this color? I am aware that matte paint requires special care but wondering if this should be an AVOID AT ALL COSTS color as I really love it!

watched several of these Ionic 5 review today and I'm glad to see yours of course! plus I like that yours has the light colored interior. with that white bezel around the screens it looks better with the light interior....sticks out like a sore thumb in the all black interior. My current lease on my 2021 Volvo ends in the spring of 2023 and by then I think I'll have a real plethora of options across several brands for choice....I really want my next vehicle to be be electric and fingers crossed by 2023 my little town with have EV charging or I've moved to a place I can charge while parked at home...Great informative first impression of the Hyundai Ionic 5 Kyle!

Great video. Lots of info. Lots of features. Has Hyundai announced the tow capacity? You seem excited about the price of the car. I own a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum which is the highest trim level of this model. It has a 6000 pound tow capacity. Important to me for pulling my boat and trailering my lawn mower. The MSRP at the time of purchase was around $43,500. I got a good deal at $37,500. It has 3 tiers of seats, albeit the 3rd tier is more for kids but I have ridden in the 3rd tier. Plenty of leg room in the 2nd tier of seats. I think the price of the Ioniq5 is high comparing to the Nissan Pathfinder. That’s really an issue with EV’s. The battery prices are so high that it adds another $10K+ to the price of the EV. Of course, would have to compare features to features, but $54,500 is too high of a price to pay with only a 256 mile range. In a Minnesota winter I would expect the range to be closer to 200 miles. Not bad for around town, but certainly not suitable for road trips. I’m all for EV’s, but I certainly don’t see how most people will be able to buy a comparable car to what they own in an ICE at a price they can afford.

I've been liking this car since I first saw ads for it. However, now that I've seen the Gensis GV60, I don't know anymore. I like the modern retro look of the Ioniq 5 but the GV60 is definitely much more luxurious and looks more well put together inside. The exterior on the Ioniq 5 is just so cool. I love the rectangles and squares, but the GV60's exterior looks really mature and high-end.

McDonald Hyundai of Littleton, CO just called me today! They will have an SEL AWD extended range shooting moon with Green interior to checkout. I think I will hold out for the Limited. Can NOT wait till I see this in person. I do have a Model Y on order with an expected delivery in July. I thought it was going to be tough choice . However after seeing this video and Tommy over at The Fast Lanes I'm thinking this is going to be the car to get. I don't need to go 0-60 super fast. I prefer a more comfortable/luxury ride quality. This car is an excellent option in the more affordable EV market and I suspect it will take it by storm. One point I'd like to make, you simply don't need an 800 volt architecture, at least with the present available battery design. Its simply a "look at what I can do" spec. Though it has a higher peak charge, its average charge rate is almost the same as Mercedes 400V system. For now, it simply adds complexity and price.

also, car has very 80s retro look (lights remind me of.. Delorian? Mitsubishi Starion?) and the screens, big bezels are weird, and that was one reason I liked the curved screen on EV6 better however, now that I have it, the magnetic thing on the side is Great! (I now keep magnets on my car, where as my fridge has the non magnetic door), AND youcan fit a phone holder in betweent he screens. Its perfect when you're not using wireless charger! Also, with 80s look, the screens on "night mode" or black scheme/dark scheme, on this car remind me the look of 80s computer screens. I dig that!

USB C is a tiny plug socket that is not all that durable so what happens when it wears out? I have never seen a USB A port fail in my life and that is what I would want in a car I intend on keeping for many years. It's just for charging anyway so it's its not like it needs any bandwidth.

Here in the UK we can't have the pan roof, and only the presale edition came with automatic door handles. My 72kw 2 wheel drive Ultimate will have manual only handles, and I have to say that's a disappointment. Other than that, my test drives have been amazing and I can't wait to get it.
