You are preaching to the choir as most people would agree with you. Unfortunately, to cut costs pretty much all manufacturers are removing physical controls. i dont think it has to do with cost saving. tesla literally added a screen for the back seat. i am very sure its more expensive to implement a screen than a few buttons. especially when its about saving money, no way youre gonna add a screen for the rear row - wheres the value? in the case of tesla, pretty sure its a design decision. they want to keep everything super tidy and get rid of everything that is not ALWAYS important to the driver. physical buttons are against their design philosophy. being a product designer myself, I can see why they do it even just for aesthetic reasons.

Look it’s not for everyone but it’s also not hard to understand or use. Keep in mind this is also my grandpas car who is 66 years old and he loves it and got used to the model 3 quickly only had it for about a month. Tesla is also best selling vehicle worldwide (model Y). There are other options though I’m not saying people gotta go out and get a Tesla.

I have a 2024 Ioniq 6 SE RWD, and the regen breaking setting never changes for me when i have it on max setting until i go into reverse. It's weird how it does for you, but the random beeping when you're not moving at all happens to me too, which i find annoying but so far, I love the car. I charge at a 350kw Electrify America charger, and in 15 - 18 minutes, im set for the rest of the week. It chargers faster than any tesla at the moment. Looks is subjective. As an Ioniq 6 driver I can say for myself that I don't want to miss any of my buttons and paddles, my roof window that can be opened, my Matrix-LEDs, my display behind the SW, surround view or my HUD. The car looks very nice in the metal imo and many ppl thought that it's a Porsche which is a compliment in my eyes, isn't it? 😊) . It polarizes very much and either you like it or you don't. I see the Model3 soooo often and I got so bored seeing it (after I loved it at first and almost bought it) I absolutely understand that ppl buy the M3 and love it but for me(!) there are too many things missing.

I think the Model 3 is a very generic-looking sedan. I don't think the Ioniq 6 is a beautiful car, but it also isn't a sinfully ugly compliance EV either. I think it's attractive in an acquired taste kind of way with interesting lines and a certain level of efficiency type of way. I think the largest complaint would be the dual tail section spoilers.

I was going to buy a Tesla but my partner hated it because it has no buttons. Another turn off was Tesla's range is reported higher than they actually get. I have been driving the Ioniq 6 for four months, and I agree with many of the things you said. The Ipedle coming and going was a pain, however after doing some research when the car is in Auto mode it is more efficient, and the level of regen breaking does not change on you. It has been a while since I took classes in ergonomics, but for this old guy, the buttons are vastly more efficient than using the center screen. I do like that it has SiriusXM radio living in rural WI cell service is not always available streaming with the phone is not a good option. I do wish that the headlights were better, although they are vastly better than I had on the Accord this car replaced. My biggest beef with this car is the lane keep asset that I can not shut off, driving in snow or on unpainted roads it can be like driving a car with Tourette's syndrome, but maybe all cars with lane keep are all that way. I can't wait until the Tesla supercharges are open to this car, for road-tripping, but even when they are it will not be as easy in this part of the country as it is in CA. Another big win for this car is service is here in town and not a six-hour round trip away.

Overall a great review Ryan. I was curious about your thoughts since I'm the former owner of a 2023 IONIQ 6 SEL RWD and the current owner of a 2024 IONIQ 6 Limited AWD (definitely a welcome upgrade though precipitated by a careless driver rather than a random choice). I found your review of the pros and cons touched on some of the points I've made myself and pretty fair with the obvious biases that come from our individual vehicle preferences. For example, I *prefer* the physical buttons (including the start button) over the *virtual* on-screen buttons that Tesla and some other EV OEMs like to use. I also like being able to direct the air vents manually among other things that Tesla uses the screen for. Your comment about not being able to see the cameras while you're driving is not Hyundai-specific. Tesla is pretty much the ONLY OEM that allows cameras while driving. I love when you said "you have options"...and that's exactly what I want. Tesla (like Apple) *forces* you into doing it the way THEY think is best. Some things you mentioned like the blind spot cameras are included in the Limited trim, and while I agree that those safety-minded features should be included in lower trims, Tesla's use of the screen for normal things that should be buttons also is a safety hazard because it takes your eyes off the road. So, overall, I think you did a good job in the review, but it is definitely a review of someone that prefers Tesla and their way of thinking...and that means you aren't really seeing everything as objectively as someone who doesn't have that bias. I do appreciate that you took the time to do the review though so thank you.

Main reason why I'd go for the Ioniq 6 over the Model 3 is the build quality. Even though Tesla definitely stepped up their build quality with the Highland refresh, I'm not sure how it will hold up over time. Teslas rattle like a bus at higher mileages and they feel extremely cheap as a result. While Hyundais are definitely not the best with build quality, I'm sure they'll be miles ahead of Tesla. It looks like objectively, you're not losing much other than the fact that the Model 3 comes with more features and has cooler tech.

I test drove one about a month ago and I was set on it, but being a first time EV owner I thought the charging network may not be there for me, even though I must prefer the aesthetics of the ioniq 6 over other EVs. I ended up getting a Tesla Model Y. I know, I know…. Totally different, but I got such a good deal on my Y, and the large amount of storage in the frunk and under the floor in the trunk, plus the vast network of chargers throughout the nation, that the Y was the more logical choice. I still prefer the looks of the Ioniq 6 (I know that’s gonna trigger some Tesla fans, and I’ma new Tesla owner myself!)

Nice review and I think you were reasonably fair. Most things that you like better on the 3 are the same things I dislike about all models of Tesla. I don't like that virtually everything is on a clunky looking 15" iPad that looks like an after thought. I like having some buttons and I can't imagine anyone having an easy time signaling a lane change in a round-about with the control on the steering wheel, perhaps 180 degrees from where it is when you're driving in a straight line. The driver will have to find it, and think, and then press it in the opposite direction from the direction they intend to steer. Not intuitive at all. Next you more or less breezed over the driver assist features that cost an additional $6,000 in the model 3. Finally, the range on the Tesla is known to be deceptively optimistic and not accurate.

One thing that you didn't cover and many car reviews don't cover - the absolute crap of the charging pre-conditioning on long trips. If you're using Google or Apple for navigation, they cannot interact with the car's systems to let the car know when it is time to start battery pre-conditioning for charging. What this results in is this - About 50ish miles before you reach the charging station, you have to go back into your in-car navigation and put in the parameters for the said charging station so the battery can start pre-conditioning - this causes a whole load of other issues. The battery pre-conditioning uses some power, often in cooler and colder weather, a significant amount of power, which causes you to loose range. And if the charging station is in the reach when you're down to 5% battery remaining, a very real chance of being stranded, I've been stranded on a turo rented F-150 lightning, because of this very issue. Fortunately, another lightning stopped and topped me up from its bed with something like 25-30 miles of range, which was enough to reach the charger at 50mph. I like the Ioniq6 SE and its range, but not close to ~50k which it is after taxes and everything in Texas and without the Federal credit and no access to Tesla SC network yet, not even an adapter available. I will buy one of these - but I am happy to wait for the Tesla plug to be inbuilt, the car being eligible for federal tax credit limit, and it being able to charge on the Tesla network - I have friends in the North-East who live closer to the tesla magicdock stations in there, and are very happy with the nearly 100% successful charging that they've done.

17:44 - I don’t know about the Ioniq 6 in particular, but I liked one thing about Hyundai’s auto-steer on a Santa Fe we rented several years ago, over Tesla’s auto-steer on highways. The underlying concept of Tesla’s system seems to be that with you are steering or the car is. If you ever override it, the system kicks out and you have re-engage it. Why? Under the Hyundai system I drove a while back, you and the car are both driving the car all the time. If there is any disagreement, the driver always wins of course, but there’s no pointless “mode switch,” of either you’re steering or the car is steering, as if pretending that the auto-steering system were some sort of primitive self-driving system. When I recently rented a Model 3, there were several cases where auto-steering disengaged when I corrected it, and I’d failed to notice that it had disengaged.

I like the design. I passed on the tesla because 1) I live in LA and literally everyone has one - it's become like owning a Honda - if you're buying a car for cool points, in LA you get zero with a Tesla. You never go anywhere and someone says "cool car". and 2) the outer design is BORING. I actually bought a body kit and mods to jazz it up - then never got it - lol - figured if I had to do that much work to like the way the car looked, then I actually didn't like the car. 3) I hated only having an iPad to control everything in the Tesla. If you ever have driven one, you'll know you're constantly looking to the right on the iPad to monitor things instead of at the road. There's a reason the higher end versions have a traditional dash display. I ended up getting an BMW X5 hybrid and every time I pass one of the zillion tesla's out here, I know I made the right choice.

The i6 actually has quite a bit more storage than the model 3 if you bring the seats down. Basically they moved the entire car forward to give the rear and front passengers more space at the cost of a frunk and some trunk space. But that means that there's a lot of free room in the cabin of the car. In my opinion having physical AC controls is better to the screen, since passengers only need to make one physical movement to adjust airflow, while on a model 3 they need to configure the airflow requirements each time on a screen. This can be distracting and difficult, especially when the screen has to be first navigated to ac controls before being used. It's unfortunate that passengers have to pause a movie or game to adjust the AC of their car if they want to. Also, the reason the car doesn't have turn signal cameras on the base edition is because they're simply not there. i have this car. i don’t have a tesla but the hyundai app is pretty basic. you can start the car and cabin. you can unlock and lock doors and look at your information. overall it’s helpful as i’ve forgot to lock my doors and i got a notification from the app promoting me to lock doors remotely.

It’s funny, I have a 2025 IONIC 6 SEL. It’s funny I loves this car over my Tesla for all the reasons you find as issues. Funny how people like things for different reasons. In my mind the IONIC 6 is a much better car than a model 3. Fit, finish, function and design. Great video. Thank you. PS love the start and stop button. I must be the demographic they are building it for. lol 😂

Had a 2023 Elantra before getting the model Y just a few weeks ago. I loved my Elantra. Hyundai makes a great car, and I was definitely looking at the IONIQ 5/6. Imo Tesla outclasses it in many different ways, some of the biggest being charging infrastructure and amount of features for the price. Happy with my choice to get the Y.

I appreciate this information, because the Ioniq was a car I considered before I got my Model Y. I am glad I got the Tesla. I would miss the driver specific stored settings for seats, mirrors and controls. The lack of storage in the Hyundai is also a big minus. Considering the features in the Tesla that are standard, like the glass roof, phone interface, and autopilot, I think I made the right decision.

Tesla does NOT get 341 miles of range. And charging now off of Teslas grid, is not a pain as you make it out to be. Ive driven to Florida and WV from Atlanta GA and it was simply perfect. And I never needed a tesla charger. My options were near perfect. And with my Bz4x and my EV6 GT line. Both which I drove long distance (WV and Florida) there wasnt any issues. None. So the thought that the problem with charging on 3rd party. Is and antiquated thought and understanding of where the charging market is outside of tesla.

The Tesla Model 3's user interface is much simpler to use and far more intuitive. I also don't like the slumped look of the Ionic 6. Also Tesla's GPS is far better than Apple Car Play or Google Maps. It is based on Google Maps, but Tesla has improved it. It appears to be inferior in many key parameters to the Model 3. It's slower, less advanced, not as smart, has only comparable range and costs more. I don't get why people would buy this over a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. This is especially true for the Model Y which has the $7,500 government rebate right now, which takes $7,500 right off of the price.

Just think - if Tesla had a start/stop button - all the stories about runaway tesla would be on the driver's fault since one could kill the car with that button. It's just another unnecessary safety feather which costs a few bucks extra to build in. I have people who own tesla and have never used the front trunk. The sun roof is not a plus to all people. Ioniq 6 truck has some issues - for example you would have troubles getting a stroller in the trunk since the entrance is narrow. Good effort for the design - but a few major issues which makes it undesirable to some. Getting NACS should increase Hyundai's market share.

To get the camera to come on when your driving forward you have to go into setting to allow this to happen….thats what I did…the same goes for regen breaking go into settings and tick or untick boxes for the kind of regen breaking you want….thats what I did with my Ioniq 6….although this guy gives a good honest test for the Ioniq 6, you have to remember that he is a Tesla lover and owner, so he not going to say everything is better that his Tesla, as far as the take off power in sports mode, at traffic lights this car can leave any petrol or diesel car standing, including an Audi A6….I’ve had my Ioniq 6 for 4 months now, and it take a little bit of testing different driving styles to get the best from your electric car, Eco mode might not be the best for you style of driving, I drove in standard mode for 58 miles at between 50 and 60 miles per hour but only use 44 miles of range, so 14 mile regenerative breaking, that pretty good going…..

Personally I like the design. Hyundai makes great EV's, although news of an Ionic 5 requiring a new battery replacement due to the car hitting a small piece of wood, from a local dealer here in Vancouver BC Canada completely dropping the ball and are now back pedalling...for the mistakes they made....The Ioniq 5 won awards world wide. At 191.6 inches the 6 is a big car, too big for me.

Lovely design, but not very functional unless you are a long-distance driver who travels light. How many people are those these days? And then, if you are a long-distance driver, then you get to fight with the lame CCS charging network until they move to NACS. So the seats are probably more comfy than Model 3 for some, but so is a gently used Lexus hybrid. If you drive more around the city, would prefer the Kia EV6 - wayyyy more functional and still > 250 miles real range.

On my Ioniq 6 I can use the rear view camera whilst driving no issues, so not sure why it didn't for you in this instance. The infotainment maps is indeed super garbage and honestly unusable (unless sending destination via the app), which sucks considering I really like the heads up display and now sits on my 'must haves'. It's a marmite look for sure, but even having owned the car since May, people still take photos of it when it is parked and I am driving which is wild to me!

Outstanding review! What made it great for me is you compared each aspect, side by side of both vehicles. I don’t like all the buttons and window switches on console. Given the choice, stalks on wheel are easier to use. Biggest weakness of Ionic is its GPS. When paying this much money for a car, I shouldn’t have to use my phone for directions. And, while on a road trip I must use the car’s GPS or won’t get battery preconditioning. Apple CarPlay does not initiate preconditioning.
