Hyundai Santa Fe XL AWD diagonal test with ice and snow ( 2013 - 2018 )

Car Question goes back in time to 2015 with the Hyundai Santa Fe XL AWD diagonal test with ice and snow! A lot of fans of CQ were not impressed with the first Santa Fe AWD diagonal test. But as you can see, even with a Santa Fe 2015, it's not that impressive. Momentum is the key, even with that lock button.
In this video, the Hyundai Santa Fe Xl AWD ( part of the third generation that was introduced for 2013! ). Back in 2013, under the hood, Santa Fe buyers have the choice of either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a more powerful, turbocharged 2.0-liter four. Given the choice between a marginal gain in fuel economy versus a significant boost in output, the turbo is our engine of choice. The three-row Santa Fe models come standard with a 3.3-liter V6.
The system uses electronic sensors and microcomputer controls to sense slippage in a vehicle's front wheels and automatically transfers power to the rear wheels. Then, when the front wheels are no longer slipping, the system reduces or eliminates power to the rear wheels.
The Hyundai AWD system has evolved a lot since 2013!

I had a 2018 for 4 years and just traded it in, I definitely did not have any issues with spinning tires or AWD

I haven't traded in my 2013 Santa fe yet, it still seems to work just fine, although I have replaced the tires.

well ALL AWD vehicules behave this way even my subaru (RIP). you have to disable traction control and/or enable differential lock. then, after your crossed the obstacle, put it back the way it was in order to not damage the transmission. According to some, you must have had a broken Subaru. Some here think that bald tires on ice presents no problem for a Subaru.... Odd that the U.S. military doesn't replace their Humvees with Outbacks....

@@neojack333 : good day. Yes, I know there are several types of AWD, some better than others, ( I believe a Humvee would be though to beat). I was being sarcastic, as there is a fellow here that believes in Subaru, and everything else, including Humvees must be junk, and that tires make no difference on ice. I can agree with your findings.

Is traction control on or off? Was the center locking diff activated? I have so many questions. Because mine doesn't react like that at all. Not even with bald tires and traction control turned off can I spin a single wheel like that lol. I get 2 or 3 wheels to slide 2\3's of a rotation before all four bite the pavement And launch the thing. But I've never lost traction on one tire where the computer didn't instantly take over and redistribute power to two or three other wheels.. . . I mean that's how All Wheel Drive is supposed to work. . . Mine works pretty good 🤷🏻‍♂️ maybe his is broke lol.

Yep. I assume this is traction control turned off. With it on my wheels never spin. (2017XL)

My 2020 Kia Sorento SX V6 AWD would have done this like cake. The Dynamax AWD Kia used on the Sorento's back then. Were FAR superior to Hyundai's Htrac AWD system used in this vehicle.

Bro just continue revving and the traction system will eventually control it. It will apply brake on the loose wheel so the power will transfer to the ones on ground.

You have to admit that these were not designed for off-roading, and do have limitations. The center differential can be locked, which would likely have helped. Did he also have old original tires on the vehicle? Or brand new ice tires?

you mean the rear lock diff lock, which this one does not have. center lock in general will not do anything in diagonal test situations.:)

Put your diff lock on,,,it okay to use up to 25mpg,,,santa fe will go anywhere with a good driver.

Well, the Santa fe isn't an off road vehicle, but on the roads, with good tires, I've never had a problem, even when towing my boat up slippery ramps.

@M Yes, Subaru has several good AWD systems. When I bought my 2013 Santa fe, Subaru's were burning quarts of oil in as little as 600 miles. My car stays on the roads, so far, and doesn't use oil. I suppose a Humvee might be better than a Subaru, but I wouldn't like the fuel bills.

I saw a similar test with a Subaru. It failed also, but was on old all season tires, not modern snow / ice tires. I can't tell what tires are on this vehicle.

as you can see, all wheels are not turning, that's because of traction control, it has to be disabled in order to pass obstacles. it's the same with all AWD vehicles

I own one since 2015, excellent traction in the snow and on ice. virtually instant transfer of needed power to the rear as seen in this video when taking off on ice or snow. Works when needed when pulling my boat out of the water. serves my needs perfectly. shortcomings sure but doesnt concern me, i dont do much of road.

It doesn't look like the driver took time to lock the center differential, which is easily done by pressing a button. I too find that the system works fine in everyday driving, and at the boat ramp, in snow, on ice, etc. Anybody know what tires were on the vehicle? Old originals from 2013 might not be working well.

I've never had a problem with my Santa fe on snow, but yes, on ice I have had problems, but none that I couldn't drive out of. I have also seen Subaru's with bald tires have problems, believe it or not.

@M Subaru has several AWD systems, some better than others. But a Subaru with bald tires doesn't do well on ice either. And with full time AWD, there's a mileage reduction all the time, spinning 3 differentials continuously, whether it's needed or not.

@M : from what I see, this test was done 7 months ago, on a 2013 car. What tires were used? Originals? When I bought my 2013 Santa Fe, Subaru was having huge problems with oil consumption, even class action lawsuits. I have a good car for every road condition I have found so far. That's good enough for me, and I don't have to buy oil by the case.
