Great review. As always. Just a thought on your fuel economy discussion generally. Many of us aren't really punching the calculator to get a payback on the diesel premium. We're very (if not more) interested in the range it gives - especially on the highway. You really see this in the discussion on take up of electric vehicles here - range is a headline.
@Richard-sl8we3 жыл бұрын
Although the new Tucson diesel only has a 54 litre fuel tank, you should get a range of around 850km on the highway in AU. I'm basing this on a conservative driving style.

Well done Tom in responding to requests for this model. Some of the Hyundai/kia pricing is starting get very disproportionate to the market. The Elite is disgusting in having Halogen headlamps that were first brought to cars in the 1970s. LED fittings would cost a few bucks more. The Chinese cars can do it. The lack of carpeting in the trunk is also very 1999. Once you have had a few things roll around in the boot that hard black plastic is covered in marks and scratches. Take a look at Skoda products for proper finish. The sad thing is choices in Diesel is now getting quite thin. I think there is a few people that would love to buy a last ever diesel dinosaur before we are all forced in to EVs and this engine is one of the best. The odd thing about the diesel Tucson is that the larger 2.2 in the Santa Fe is actually marginally more fuel efficient. Diesel may turn out to be a huge bargain as PULP may become the base petrol at a huge premium in 3-5 years time as the new fuel regs play out

I've just watched your review again. Very encouraging since I've had one ordered for 4 months now. (No build date yet so at least 2 more months to wait!!) I did not go for the Highlander because the sun roof was a complete deal breaker. However, I did go for the NLine package, which incorporates most of the advantages of the Highlander you identified. It only seems to miss out on the power tail gate and blind spot camera. However, the NLine costs only $2k instead of $7k for the top spec. All in all, very happy with my choice. Now just have to wait for Hyundai!!

In my opinion, Torque is more important in the family SUV category, not power. If you prefer to cruise, especially on the highway, and enjoy a more relaxed drive, the Tucson Highlander 2.0 TD is the better car. Take both cars for a test drive and you'll see what I mean. With a diesel, everything happens at much lower rpm, typically between 1500 - 2500 rpm.

Well as a Queensland resident I am not buying a highlander as i don't want a sun roof. Full stop. Dumbest "feature" ever ... heat load, sun burn, skin cancer, more stuff to fail (or pay to maintain), seals to leak, components to rattle, less headroom, and less structural integrity. I agree i would like the led headlights but an LED light bar will give a LOT more light than high beam LED headlights (I've used both) and at a tenth the cost of stepping up to highlander. N- line also gives LED headlights for 2k but I prefer not to have the body kit, I hate the painted wheel arch flares etc, and am unconvinced about how practical the suede seats are. And (on highlander) I detest the electronic rear view mirror in my current car as it is never dark enough and only changes when it feels like it ... which does NOT correspond with when i am being dazzled by the fool behind me. So if I avoid highlander i can dodge that bullet too. And save seven large. Works for me... 😁

The fact that they don’t offer a fully digital display or even semi-digital display on a $46,000 SUV is disappointing and there is no LED lights on a car that price which I’m just shocked at. It doesn’t have a power tailgate and a couple other features which is honestly sad to see for a $46,000 vehicle. And I was expecting more power from a 2.0TD than 137kw and fuel economy isn’t so great considering it’s a turbo. Thank god I got rid of my kia, never would I buy a hyundai/kia product again.. Great review again Tom. Question - and I know what I am asking is very subjective - but what are your thoughts on this vs something like Haval's H6 Ultra at roughly $10K less for the purpose of a family car? Clearly the Tucson is a better option and so price/affordability is up to each individual, but is this Tucson worth the extra $10K / worth saving that bit extra.... or if budgets are importantly (sadly!), do you think the H6 could make sense or any other alternative option?
@chasingcars3 жыл бұрын
It's a very fair question. Ultimately - to me - it comes down to build quality, fit and finish and how safely the car handles. The H6 really isn't bad -- but it still noticeably trails the mainstream set in ride/handling, which is important day-to-day for your comfort and critical if or when you really need the car to be with you when swerving to avoid an obstacle. For that reason I'd still err towards a base CX-5 / Tucson / Sportage etc, and I'd also look at certified pre-owned options 1-3 years old. That said, test drive the H6 but *insist* that your test drive route takes in some really bad surfaces. Not just the lap around the dealership.

I had a highlander for two days , and 1, its underpowered, and I drove both the Turbo petrol and oil burner, the engine is just way too underpowered for its size, 2, its trying to compete with Jeep and others, and yet fails at quality at interior and cheap plastics, and poor styling inside, the seats are ok, but again top end spec car at 56K, better choices for the money, if it was 10 K cheaper it would be great, but look at others for that price bracket or go for the entry level, but really 56K for a cheap looking interior is just not the answer

Could not see a handbraker [so whats new?] These electric park brakes are a lethal device waiting to kill people one day.

How? Is there a history of them suddenly activating themselves?

@@jeffreylangdon4703 Think about this, your electrics go on strike one day, you are doing 100 down the freeway, you have no power brakes save for the few pumps uintil vacuum is gone, no power steering and from personal experience, trying to stop a 4 disc braked car in a panic stop without power assist is impossible, [this happened in a different sutuation with a ruptured power booster diaphragm] and the only means of averting a nose/tail was averted by grabbing the hand brake, pushing the EPB button is useless when the electrics are down. These stupid things are only a cost saving device by manufacturers because the more stuff you can hang off the computer the cheaper it is. You are then in an uncontrollable missile. Going down a steep hill with a sharp turn at the bottom would be a thrill you don't need.

Turning signals bottom of car. If you bump your car lightly and breaks turning light. Its not road worthy. Turning signals should be up.
