Welcome to my SCR Competition-Car Review of the latest edition to the "Super" Hot Hatch class, the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N. In this video I not only review this very quick turbocharged rocket, but also enter into a SCCA National Autocross event where I race it against the legendary Honda Civic Type R. this is what i was exactly looking for in a review of the veloster N against the Type Rs. I have seen your miata videos but never realized you made this and am glad i finally found it after watching majority of the typical car reviews on the veloster N. What a way to review and showcase the car with just barebone modification incredible driving!

Hey Mark, it was great meeting you last month at the tour. Excellent review! Just wanted to point out that the price you showed looked like the 2021 DCT price. The MSRP for the 19/20 Performance Package Veloster N is normally just under $30K. Hope to see you at another tour soon.

Haha you caught that ;) Yeah the only image I could find of a window sticker was a new one, plus assuming most people in the market for one of these cars will likely be buying new (used with the PP are hard to find).

Congrats on your win, Mark. I really enjoy this kind of competition review. Did you have a chance to use the auto rev-matching and launch control?
@fastpaxSCR

Thanks Yongzhe! Yes, we used the active rev match, pretty cool feature, however not launch control...unfortunately the launch control can only be activated in Sport mode where ESC/Trac are still on.

The video smoothing makes it look like you're late/pushing (but you're NOT). Crazy how far Hyundai has come. Impressive driving as usual and good review (plus sweet E30 Shirt).

Got dang it, I've been commuting to work for 2 years in my Veloster N PP, and haven't done Sshit. I drove the tail of the dragon about a month after I got it and hung out up in the mountains having fun for a week or so, but ever since then I may have well been driving a Prius. I'm so ashamed of myself.

Hey Mark, What size of tire 265/? Front n rear same size? Any mod to get them to fit?
@fastpaxSCR

The wheels are Enkei Tuning TS-10, 18x8 50mm offset. Tires are 265/35-18 RE-71R and just barely fit. The car owner tried a 47mm offset wheel and they rubbed the fender.

Hi Mark, quick question. Do you left foot brake during autocross runs?
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR 3 жыл бұрын
No I do not left foot brake, I haven't done that since my karting days many years ago. In fact, I typically recommend that people don't get too used to left foot braking, because many modern cars don't allow it. I haven't tried it in the N, but I know my 2019 Miata will not allow throttle and brake at the same time...completely shuts down.

2021 has upgraded seats and is around 32,000 do you personally think the type r is worth 5,000 more?
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR 3 жыл бұрын
Type R is more powerful, a bit bigger, and has 4 full doors. Veloster is cheaper, but will lose value a lot quicker. Put it this way...the Type R is $5K more, but you will always get that money back because it won't depreciate near as quick. Another idea would be to find a used 19-20 Veloster with the Performance Package...depending on miles you might be able to get one in the low $20s which is a lot of car for the money.
@PiroFyre
@PiroFyre 3 жыл бұрын
If you're planning on keeping the car for a very long time, say 5+ years, the N would be worth your time and money. Especially if you plan on doing motorsport events with it, consumables like brakes pads, rotors, etc will be cheaper and save you a good amount of money. If you only plan on keeping it for 1-3 years, the CTR will have a much better trade-in and selling value. Although I will say a used N w/PP is gone within a few days of listing. Even 2021 models seem to only sit on the lot for only 1-2 weeks before they're gone. Supply and demand is the only reason why they're currently holding somewhat of a value better than most other Hyundais.

@@fastpaxSCR 1. I paid $32K for my 2021 N DCT. Please let me know where I can get a Type R for $37K. I'll buy two. 2. If you want fast, you want the DCT.

'21 Veloster N DCT - $31k (dealer was running a promotional deal plus military discount. I was actually surprised the deal applied to the N) . I was hunting for an R but the best I could find was a 2016 with with lowish miles for 36k. New was way worse, couldn't find anything under 40k. Sorry not paying 40k (probably more like 47k out the door) for a civic regardless of how long I've waited for a Civic Type-R to come to the US. TBH, I like both cars and it didn't really come down to the money. I test drive both and really liked the Veloster. Not saying it's better but it's what I preferred at this moment in time. Furthermore, cars are terrible financial investments, if your worried about resale I'd argue you can't afford your car and should look closer at the used market.

@@fastpaxSCR ah GREAT info. That is extremely helpful. In SCCA time trials (T3) we aren't so much limited by tire size, so I'm theory crafting if a stock (no fender rolling) VN can fit 9" wheels w/ 265/35/18's. This is very useful information for that. Thanks!
