I’ve been wanting you to react to this since it came out. Thank you. I appreciate how you take your reactions seriously and think about the complexity of songs. I interpreted the line that talks about the scent of a stranger from the person of his affection to mean that they were once close and have now drifted apart. Not so much that there was third person, but that they became a stranger. It’s interesting to think about it from the perspective of them moving on to someone new and then perhaps trying to come back around only to find things had changed as the lyrics suggest later. I think both ideas fit and it makes me think about what would be more heartbreaking? Another person getting in between? Or growing apart/not matching the same seriousness of feelings?
