They do. The setting where these characters live in is called "Cier" and it has a WHOLE history, with nations, factions, politics... etc etc, all that jazz. These characters are all just small parts of that world. I recommend giving it a read on the wiki or watching the videos on it!

The only reason they're more exciting is that, this particular genre is kind of unexpected for the most part on how a simple stick figure can make for a good animation. Unlike anime, anime is getting more stale as the years pass, there are some good animes there and there, but it's not enough to fill the void of the bad ones. That's my opinion.
