You did this thinking of good ol' Charlotte NC, didn't you? US-29/NC-49...🙂. Nice drive Bro!

We have Emmanuel Cleaver and the Kansas City Star to thank for that.

I-49 was supposed to have the Northern Terminus at I-670/I-70 in Downtown KCMO, but there are 2 sections of US-71 that haven't been upgraded to Interstate Standards, but the rest of US-71 from I-435 to I-670/I-70 is Interstate Ready. But when MoDOT tried to upgrade those 2 sections to Interstate Standards, the Kansas City, MO judge blocked that project via a court order due to the heavy NIMBYism from the residents along that route.

personally the NIMBY stuff needs to go, theres solutions out there to cap interstates now that would be proposed solutions to most projects today. theres no need for NIMBY laws and such. if people hate change so much, then they might as well be asking for death of their towns. change is gonna happen, and people need to learn to accept it, what you need to ask for is the right changes. but because people are closed minded, change never happens in towns that need change to progress. and this is the same for neighborhoods. i get it, some people hate change, they rather not see their neighborhood upgraded for better access or have a new grocery store built because "muh neighborhood is gone when you build that!" but then that same grocery store that was gonna be where they wanted it to be, will move somewhere else, and you would have no close jobs thats within a few blocks.

In my opinion those traffic lights make any commute along that stretch of US-71 annoying to go through. I just wish it was signed as I-49 just for the speed limit increase. Majority of people go 70+ mph despite it having a 55 mph speed limit which in turn makes it have so many pull overs. I think I once saw 3 people pulled over in one commute. Hopefully one day it'll become part of the interstate system.

And of no coincidence those are among the 3 most dangerous intersections in the city.

@@Zeakthecat If I had to make a prediction a push to remove that court order and upgrade the remaining part of US-71 to interstate may be if and when I-49 is completed in Arkansas and Louisiana. The increase of traffic from south heading north via I-29 up north may be enough to push that change. If so then we won't see that happen until 2070 or so. Aside from that I don't see how it'll go through. Edit: I also realized in the far future once both I-69 (in Texas at least) and I-49 are complete, anyone from south east Texas may find I-49 to be a faster route to KC or any north city towards Canada which may also increase the traffic through that stretch of US-71. For example Houston to Omaha. Just some food for thought.

@@Sir_Kaz on top of it, accidents go up in that section, and the risk of a serious hazmat incident goes up as well. imagine a semi truck carrying hazardous waste or chemicals, the semi truck driver not seeing traffic ahead come to a stop runs right into a huge pile of cars at 70 mph. now imagine that same truck catching on fire and local FD isn't able to reach in time. good golly malone, the entire city would be pointing fingers at the judge and the NIMBY neighborhood for preventing those sections from being upgraded so the threat could be minimalized. all assuming trucks carrying hazardous materials are not prohibited from going into the area. and sooner or later its gonna happen and its not gonna be pretty when it does happen.

Just FYI, you crossed into Clay County when you went over the river (19:48), until that point you had been in Jackson County. (Since you put when you entered Platte County) Also, you were in the city of Platte Woods from (29:08-29:42) Great video. You’re very thorough so I’m really not finding many errors.

Don't get me started again on the NIMBYs who stopped US 71 from becoming I-49 through KCMO. But having a freeway downgraded to an expressway with stoplights and grade crossings, then returns to a freeway, creates an exceptionally dangerous situation. MoDot could possibly move the mainline in and build diverging diamonds at most, it not all, of the intersections. But the lawsuit stops that, and doing it would be massively expensive. One day, 49 will end at the I-70/670/29/35 interchange. I'll be reduced to ash first. Because traffic was light this day, it's not too bad. But wait till drive times and come back. And, yeah, one day I-70 should be moved off the L&C Viaduct and down to the current 670. Hell will have permafrost before that happens.

I always found it kind of wierd that both are separate interstates when they could easily be combined.

All of I-49 follows the original proposed routing for I-29 but for some reason, it didn’t come to fruition.
