Just today, the new flyover ramp from the 495 North regular lanes to the 66 West regular lanes is open. The existing loop ramp will be for the 495 North regular lanes to the 66 West Express Lanes traffic.

I remember when the reversible HOV lanes (looks like they are tolled now) were first built there would be people that would hang out somewhere before the lanes started (I don't remember just exactly where) and would charge you money to ride with them on the HOV lanes so you would have enough people, and then you would drop them off when you got to DC. People also used cardboard cut outs...(don't know how well that worked) Traffic sucked that bad, so even though there was no toll...you could pay one, just not to the government 😄

I saw some something in the news last summer that stated they are going to change the number designation in the DC section of this road to reduce confusion around the I-395/I-695 split. Currently I-395 turns North into the tunnel and ends at New York Ave while I-695 begins on the main stretch and continues until it ends at I-295. With the changes, I-695 will be dropped and I-395 will continue on the current I-695 highway. The "exit" and the tunnel were I-395 currently traverses will be re-designated into the new I-195. All of this has been approved by the necessary bodies, but so far nothing about these changes have been implemented.

@@johnfloyd2551 I-695 is inside the actual city of DC and is only about 1-2 miles long. It's sole purpose is to connect I-395 to I-295 with a crossing of the Anacostia River.

Greetings from the Mixing Bowl, all 41 miles of it, as you start the trip. Before they built the Beltway (yes, there was such a time), 395 was I-95. But it only went as far as Capitol Street, though it was supposed to go through town and head for Baltimore. It's been extended over the years, but only as far as New York Street (US 50). After the Beltway was built, it was decided to move 95 onto the Beltway, as there was the usual NIMBY opposition to finishing it through the District.

Ah, the old mixing bowl. Truly one of the scariest places to navigate. I was living on Frontier Drive during the rebuild. Fascinating engineering project.

Before the Beltway, what is now 395 was VA 350, and it went as far as the 14th St Bridge.

@@UIJuS10 My 1960 Rand McNally atlas carries both designations for the Shirley Memorial Highway, with the stretch from the 14th Street Bridge to Capitol Street in the District under construction

@@rjmcallister1888 the original Shirley Highway was not built to Interstate Highway standards and was administered by the Bureau of Public Roads. Transfer to VDH was not resolved until 1964, at which point the highway had to be upgraded. The highway would carry the I-95 designation after each segment of upgrades were complete. The at-grade rail crossing in Shirlington wasn't removed until 1968. Rand McNally maps early in the Interstate era tended to indicate proposed routes as complete where a designation would occur on a pre-existing road. It's been a while since I've looked at one, but I do recall seeing shields for I-70 on stretches of US-40 where duplexes were proposed to occur in Maryland.

@@UIJuS10 The Shirley Memorial Highway opened as VA350 in 1949, running from the Pentagon to near Woodbridge. The at-grade rail crossing was replaced after a major crash in 1952. I-95 was to have followed the current 395 route through the Northeast District and connect with the current 95 at the Beltway interchange in Maryland. NIMBY resistance caused the federal Bureau of Public Roads' successor, the US Department of Transportation, to eventually cancel the rest of the I-95 project in 1977, formally transferring I-95 to the eastern Beltway and designating the old 95 to 395 between the Springfield Interchange and New York Avenue. There are a couple of fragments of that abandoned interchange near College Park.

I-395 was originally supposed to be the city throughfare for I-95. However, politics got the better of the issue and I-95 was rerouted and cosigned with I-495 along the east side of the Beltway. Since a portion of the original I-95 was complete, they renumbered it as I-395.
