dude i never thought it would make it that far! this is nuts! i think if you would only fibreglass the outside you would have a pretty strong board

You don't have to fiberglass the outside. Just increase the infill and use a puzzle like assembly style. After that it's best to seal the plastic, you can just use resin but there are specific materials for sealing 3d prints.

@@rodolfoo3015Most of an object's strength comes from the outer perimeter/shell. This is why surfboards use foam with a fiberglass shell. You are much better off using as little infill as possible to get the strength you need, then fiberglassing the outside.

Gluing PETG is a nightmare. Try ASA its strong, UV resistant and can be glued easy. Seems your board broke at the glue-up. Change the infill from triangular to a stronger pattern like gyroid. I`m living in the mountains and will probably never surf in my life but have done some technical prints for building my own paint booth. Rad project so far! Good luck for your second try.

Amazing experiment! As an engineer, 3D printing fan and surfer, I instantly subscribed! I'm curious to see what you try next, I've 3D printed about everything from guitars, RC planes, and even Tourbillon Clocks! Haven't tried printing a surfboard yet. However, I would try using a mix of hydrophilic filament materials and epoxy resin the exterior, even a hybrid inner EPS core with 3D printed exterior. Some slicers even have new interesting outer layer finishing settings, you could even make a grippy traction layer for a wax free board. Great content, thank you for sharing 😎🤙🏄‍♂️

Im also a surfer and engineer. I've experimented with 3d printing fins and the amount of flex you get from them is insane. I can hardly imagine how gummy/springy that board felt under your feet!

Sickkk dude! Can't believe it lasted that long! I would recommend increasing the surface area between the individual blocks by having a irregular profile on the contact faces, that way you can decrease the load on the dowels themselves. picture the cutting profile for separating the pieces being a zig zag versus a series of rectangles

Change the dowels to aluminium and re-epoxy it back together, I think it would work. Maybe add an aluminium stringer down the middle with the dowels going through it from either side. You could model it from your existing CAD and get it laser or water-jet cut from a piece of 6mm aluminium. Just trying to help, great project 👍👍👍

That is such an awesome project the passion you have is amazing I thought these pointers could help for V2 from a fellow Bay area 3D printer user --Seems like you might have printed it vertically which would make it easier for the piece to snap in half where as horizontal could make it stronger --I also noticed that the outer walls were printed pretty thin, for cosplay at least we tend to print it thicker to prevent cracks and snaps -- Maybe try Gyroid infill have seen much less failures with it Would love to talk more on how maybe it could be improved this is amazing!

It's probably a good idea to fill the seams with filler material, sand that smooth, then give the entire board a thick clearcoat. That way no more water should be able to seep in.

For printing in parts, I'd cut the board in half between the deck and the bottom as well, so you can print it without supports but still have the layers horizontal when youre surfing. printing it vertically like that puts all the force of standing on it on the weakest side of the printed parts

Hey nice job there. I'm gonna stay tuned for the V2. Love the work and passion behind it! I been thinking about a mix of dovetail with a dowels hybrid you could reach a point between flex and not passing the limit deformation of the filament. The cloth and resin work together to mantain the board in those boundaries. The dowels are good for keeping the pieces together but is a woodworking techinique meant for things that arent gonna flex. May I ask you what type of jointery is meant to flex? I'ts not about the jointery at all. I'ts about maintaining the piece between the limits of plastic deformation when you apply forces to it, so the more effort you put in maintaining alltogheder but allowing to flex without deformation the better results you'll get I think that if you would put a dovetail in each of the faces and the center for each piece you could reach better results. Like a puzzle kind of stuff, this way you could also adapt each part of the surfboard to allow differents flexes ranges (imagine that you are riding a front wave and you are going sideway engaged at the rail. If you press down the board in between the part of the rail and the center of the board it could flex upwards. the board in the center will always compress towards the center so you gotta make the tail and the nose capable of flex a bit) If this flex thing sounds weird and nonsense, then i think that a solid construct with proper cloth and resin over each surface will be needed to mantain everthing together... Good luck in your journey!

@@beachcowboy_ it depends, for example instead of cheap pla you can use foam pla, this way you can increase infill without increasing weight.
