The bridge you drove on Between 36:36 and 38:10 collapsed early this morning, and now we can no longer drive on the bridge

Today (March 26, 2024) marks a terrible disaster for Baltimore: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which opened in 1977 and carries I-695, collapsed into the bay due to a large container ship colliding with one of its main support pillars.

After my comments over at the Francis Scott Key Bridge Eastbound video it was good to get a wider impression of my fellow Art Deco architecture-loving person's journey to and from the there-mentioned flea market, as I spotted the exits to Ellicott City early on in the video. I know that the swimmer, Michael Phelps comes from Towson, so I thought through that section that this was 'Michael Phelps Country'. I dare say that swimming is the only option through a certain part of the Beltway now!

The interesting thing about this highway is that you really couldn't tell if I-695 was sequential or mile-based until you drove on the east side. The exits are for the most part a mile apart and line up just about perfectly with the mile markers.

One of my favorite highways (J.R Allen Parkway or U.S 80/GA SR 22) still uses sequential exit numbers, which is interesting.

You know, while driving from DC to Philly and vice versa, if you don't want to pay tolls by using the tunnels of I-95 and I-895 or the Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695 MD) by crossing the wide part of the Patapasco River near Baltimore's harbour, stay on I-695 as you stay in and go around Baltimore County, MD while bypassing north of Baltimore while driving from DC to Philly and vice versa.

I don’t know what time of the day this was or what day of the week but it’s amazing how light traffic is on the west side of the beltway.
