As the Durham skyline continues to grow, the view entering Durham will become impressive over the next several years.

@1:04:00 I love it when they design the Interstate to retain a wide forested median. It feels like you're on an advanced two lane country road. No headlights in your face at night, no oncoming vehicle is going to mess up and mow down 400 feet of thick forest to get to your lane and I think it just looks beautiful. Wide medians are one off my favorite features of the Interstate system when they implement it. So glad engineers thought of this making for a more pleasant drive.

The place where you started the video - just past exit 170 - observe the road here. It's much narrower, with a narrow median strip, and with very short entrance and exit ramps, with the exit signs posted on the shoulder, never overhead. It is like this again from exit 179 (East Club Blvd) to exit 183 (Redwood Rd). This is the old design for the road which hasn't been upgraded. I-85 was like this all through Durham until about 2002 - 2005, when they began a massive expansion project to 5 lanes on each side like it is now. This was the result of an accident on the Friday before Labor Day weekend on northbound I-85 at exit 176. At the time, the exits for Gregson St and Duke St were not separated from the main road like they are now. Someone got on I-85 north from Gregson St - which at the time was the same lane for the exit for Duke St. Someone tried to merge, and an 18 wheeler was there. 85 was only 2 lanes wide there, and the tractor trailer hit the car and fell over on its side, blocking the road for hours. They decided after that that they needed to expand I-85 through Durham. There were other differences also. Going South on I-85, the exit for 15-501 used to be on the left. They moved it over to the right side of the road. The entrance from US 70 West onto 85 South was a left entrance. They moved that over to the right. Also going South on I-85, there was no exit to get onto US 70. You used to have to get off at exit 179 for East Club Blvd, make a left, then make a right on Geer St, then go under US 70, and have a left to get on it. They closed the US 70/Geer St interchange and moved the interchange over to Cheek Road. This all happened 17 - 20 years ago. I wonder who even remembers all of that. Also the Durham Freeway did not used to connect to I-85 until around 1995 or so. Exit 172 was for US 70 Business / Hillsborough Road - that is the road you see behind the concrete barrier at about 1:00. They closed the exit there when they finished the Durham Freeway all the way to I-85. It opened in 1998 if I remember correctly. For many years the Durham Freeway only went as far as US 15-501. They also recently made major improvements to US 70 near the interchange with NC-98 (Holloway St). They connected US 70 to the Durham Freeway and renamed it I-885. The connection was just opened on June 30, 2022. They worked on building the new connection there since 2015.

Sorry - 1:46 - 2:00 - that is US 70 Business / Hillsborough Rd on the other side of the cement wall/divider. That is where the old exit 172 was until the Durham Freeway was connected. The old exit closed in about 1995.

Also meant to say - the accident at exit 176 on I-85 north that prompted the expansion of the road happened the Friday before Labor Day weekend in 1996.

Personally, I haven’t taken I-85 before. But, it’s a great alternate route to NC if 95 is congested. I say this because there are many exits that connect later on.
