@@mrscwchino while you can say there are some aspects it can be used, flow dynamics for example, but there are some things you can't do, simulate human behaviour/psychology in flow dynamics. the game uses algorithms such as a* for pathfinding for cars and other ideal algorithms, but humans aren't always the most rational and therefore as much as you can throw in the modifier for human irrationality you can't fully do it. For example, flow dynamics says the zipper method of lane merging is most rational and creates the greatest flow of traffic movement, but in reality you look at zipper mergers in a construction zone, I think by far the most chaotic thing in world with people waiting till the end and not getting in, two cars merging in at once not one at a time, people merging too early

@@a_boat93 except real cities would've taken decades to make even 1% of these improvements because it'll cost too much and the people in power won't stand for that. An exception I can think of rn is that city in the Netherlands (I think) that's currently removing a crap ton of unnecessary parking lots and parking spaces next to roads, which cause traffic to slow down on top of being dangerous for both other cars and cyclists. They're also converting most of those spaces into outdoor community areas and pedestrian & cyclist only areas which is honestly good for everyone's mental health (bonus points for less noise pollution). Iirc it's their elected party that's in charge of this so it's nice seeing a government actually doing a good job and trying to improve their people's quality of life. In general most of northern Europe has excellent public transport with good disability support and a lot of cyclists. With the already small roads it's unnecessary to dedicate so much space for cars when they could instead have massive parking garages (bonus points for making it less of a chore to find parking if you need it). This ended up being way longer than I intended 😅

@@101falcon politics and money always get in the way at the end of the day. Regardless, I appreciated the comment above simply because it goes to show when playing this game that it’s okay to make mistakes and you don’t have to create the perfect utopia the first time around when building in CS. So many players I see on the discord never finish their cities cuz it wasn’t perfect…when in a lot of cases they barely even started lol. So I liked the fact that Phil revisits these. It’s okay to make mistakes and redo your work….the realism of it is legit cuz that’s what real life gives us. To your point though, it’s super unfortunate that in the vast majority of cases especially here in the US it takes a long time to get anything positive done if at all. What a wonderful world we live in lol

Love the channel. I want to call out something I’ve seen a few times that I think could be addressed. When it comes to transportation, the railroads, almost always, were there first. When it come to comprehensive planning, the railroads still have a ton of power and autonomy, and tend to be very reluctant to changes that could disrupt operations, or increase their own liability when it comes to co-location with public transit. BNSF is a good example. Where I think this pertains to your builds (or rebuilds in this case) is that elevating or working the railroads so as not to interfere with road networks isn’t “the height of realism” because as I noted before, the rails were there first. Bridging as appropriate, the rails tend to take the most direct path over the smoothest grade possible. Road networks, building, etc tend to follow railroads almost as if the railroads were a geographical feature to work around. There are of course exceptions, and this is a game. However it seems that around the 16:00 mark, the rails should follow the ground rather than elevating on a large bridge, and the surrounding area conform to some of these constraints. This could be roadway underpasses where the rail maintains its grade, overpasses, excavations with retaining or rock walls, etc. Just my two cents here; and like I said, love the channel.

Love this idea for a series, feels like something along the lines of a “scenario” despite you building it yourself. Coming into an existing situation to come up with solutions is to me a more interesting premise than planning a perfect city from the ground up. Feels more in line with the reality of life around the world, we work with what we got, not ideal but what choice do we have? :-)

100% agree. The changes he did to the city were obviously for the better overall function of the city but I would also argue those same changes removed some of the character of the city :( I would love to see more preservation of the old city’s character where if it’s absolutely egregious like building up the side of a mountain it goes away, but if it’s a funky roadway try to preserve the right of way as much as possible and simply apply better roadway hierarchy principles. Additionally, I think the 100m buffer between highway and the communities is a little large for the urban parts of the city. Maybe a 50m buffer in the urban parts is better

From time to time I’ve had some extra time to play older game saves. During the last snow, I added a passenger and an industry rail lines. That was one significant positive difference that lessened traffic. Then, I upgraded highway interchanges and added a few roundabouts between different areas of town. The traffic and the flow of my city really improved. I’m following along for more tips on how to improve my ‘older’ city.

Since you're playing with mods, one to consider (if you haven't already) is TM:CE (Transfer Manager: Community Edition). With districts set up, you can assign Police, Fire, Medical, Trash, etc to operate only within a district and not throughout the entire city, greatly reducing send out and return time as well as traffic flow.

Hello I'm here to talk about trains! To answer your question at 17:25, the crossings right near each other is not totally unrealistic, although they would try to avoid it if possible. The thing that isn't realistic is the switch on the bridge. Bridges for freight trains are very expensive. They have to carry a lot of weight, and the weight varies from train to train, and even on the train itself it varies from car to car. They would definitely avoid curves on bridges as well, think about the stress that causes on the pylons as the inertia of the train tries to tip it over. Trains have to go very slow on bridges that are curved for just this reason. I definitely understand dealing with the game and how it works, but all those bridges in the city are not realistic. They do however elevate passenger rail because of necessity and because its much lighter than freight. I can't wait to continue enjoying the series!

I've been watching your videos for over a year now and I have learned so much. To be honest, I watch them less to learn and more to relax - the learning is just a bonus. You are like the Bob Ross of Cities Skylines. You have such a nice tone as you speak, and you have a gentle humor that pulls reactions from me that range from a slight (genuine) smile to full-on hysterical laughter (even when such a response was more than likely not your intent). Watching you fix everything here is very inspiring and motivating, it gives me hope that even I would be able to sort out my mess of a city later on (and your thoughts on those tunnels, bridges and airports sent me reeling with laughter ahaha). Anyway, thank you for doing what you do. You are so fun and so wholesome as you build, and I would be the happiest Cim to be in your city. Not me standing in my low-density eco-friendly smart home settled off an appropriately placed local road giving the sky the finger-guns like "That's my major up there. What a guy".

Love how the episode started with the zone he was gonna work on, and then completely didn't do that XD

I love the concept for this series! I've got plenty of old cities I'd like to fix up, myself, so I'm really excited to see how you approach this situation.

Would love to see this be a long series. Sort of like a fixer upper series. Fix and thrive!

Hey Phil, I love projects like this. Motto: Mulligan madness! 😀I think it's oftentimes harder to fix something (especially something of that size) than to build from scratch. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes! Great idea!

I’m really liking this revisit of an old city. You taught me a few things in this video about places to revisit in my own city! Please keep this series going!

Been watching many of your videos the past 2 months and finally downloading the game to test what ive learned and respecting the topography. Living in WV helps on what not to do. lol Thanks for your videos. I Plan to continue.

Love the way you just took an old city and make radical changes. I'm always nervous doing that. 😊

At first 🙈 after those initial changes 👌 cannot wait to see what it looks like once you have finished revitalizing the city.

What an awesome series! I love going back to old cities, though I routinely get overwhelmed. I would love to revisit other people's cities too, that would be super neat.

I just started getting back into Cities: Skylines, and this video couldn't have come at a better time for me! I've been watching your other videos, and have been using one of my old saves as a sandbox to try and apply what I've learned to make my traffic flow better and the city feel more realistic. Want to start my own Verde Beach soon! Thanks for making these videos so fun to watch :)

In the future, I would like that roundabout city near the airport(s) to be at least somewhat retained. I just think it's a neat little district that could either be a mini-CBD or a tourism hub, or something like that.
